After Kitzmiller--What?
Kitzmiller v. Dover, the 2005 case establishing the unconstitutionality of teaching intelligent design creationism in the public schools, was a pivotal event in the history of the creationism/evolution controversy in the United States. Why was Kitzmiller the effective end of the second phase of antievolution strategy? And what is the third phase going to be like?

Are Babies Atheist?
It depends on how you define atheist.
If atheist just means "someone who doesn't believe in a god," then yes, babies are atheists. But, you know what? So is your dog. And every fetus. And every corpse lying in the ground. They don't believe in God, because they don't think about these things. So if that's your definition, then who really cares?
You might as well say the baby doesn't like sports. No, it doesn't, but only because it has no idea what you're talking about. My wife doesn't like sports, but it's because she thinks they're boring. The key words there being: "She thinks"
I promise you no atheist group is saying, "You just had a baby? Look like we have a new member!" Because a baby's atheism means nothing.
So how should we define atheist? At least in context here, we should treat it as active disbelief -- someone who has come to the conclusion that he doesn't believe in God. Because if you haven't thought about it, it means nothing.
Taking credit for someone's beliefs when they've never even really thought about it isn't something atheists ought to be doing. The church does that already. Between childhood baptisms and indoctrination classes and people who think you're religious because you happen to be born to religious parents, there are enough people who think children need to have a religious label.
Let's not be like them. Next time someone says a baby is an atheist, challenge their definition. Even if they're technically right, it's a meaningless victory.

Does It Matter If Jesus Was Married?
Bart was invited to a discussion at the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in the Beam Music Center, Doc Rando Hall, UNLV. Which is an International Center for Creative Writers and Scholars. The event was open to the public, hosted on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 7pm. Bart Ehrman, Karen L. King (Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School) and Mark Jordan (Distinguished Professor at Washington University, Saint Louis) discuss the underlying question: What would a married Christ mean for the theology, practices, and politics of Christian traditions as they grapple with changing times?
In 2012, Harvard's Hollis Professor of Divinity, Karen King, shocked the Christian world by revealing an ancient papyrus text in which Jesus refers to his "wife." Written on a piece of papyrus now reduced to just four centimeters high and eight wide, the fragment addresses issues of family and discipleship. "This is the only extant ancient text which explicitly portrays Jesus as referring to a wife," King writes in her scholarly paper on the "The Gospel of Jesus's Wife." In an interview, King emphasized that this discovery does not prove that the historical Jesus was married. This gospel, like others dated to the second century which make opposing claims—that Jesus was celibate, for example—are too late, historically speaking, to provide any evidence as to whether the historical Jesus was married or not, she says. But the fragment does suggest that 150 years or so after Jesus's birth, Christians were already taking positions on such questions. Significantly, this new text pushes the date at which some Christians were asserting that Jesus was married back to a time contemporaneous with the earliest assertions that he was celibate.
Video discussed on Bart Ehrman's Foundation Blog: http://ehrmanblog.org/?p=6973
Bart D. Ehrman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He came to UNC in 1988, after four years of teaching at Rutgers University. At UNC he has served as both the Director of Graduate Studies and the Chair of the Department of Religious Studies. A graduate of Wheaton College (Illinois), Professor Ehrman received both his Masters of Divinity and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where his 1985 doctoral dissertation was awarded magna cum laude.

Sam harris: End of Faith (book tv)
Sam Harris, who is currently completing a doctorate in neuroscience to research the neural foundation for belief, talked about his first book The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason, published in a new paperback edition by W.W. Norton and Company.
Sam Harris argued that religion played a major role in an increasingly dangerous world. He criticized the influence of religion in both the United States and across the Muslim world, saying that for peace to exist, reason must replace faith as the driving force in society. Following his remarks, Mr. Harris responded to questions and comments submitted by members of the audience. Ms. Jacoby moderated the program.
The talk, presented by CFI-Metro New York and cosponsored by the New York Society for Ethical Culture, is the second in the 2005 - 2006 Voices of Reason series.

Huh? GOP Governor Accuses *Obama* Of Being A "Science Denier?"
"Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal paid a visit to Washington, D.C. this week to roll out his national energy policy blueprint.
"At a breakfast for reporters Tuesday hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, the Republican governor attacked President Barack Obama for not fully taking advantage of the United States' fossil fuel and energy resources.
"'The reality is right now we've got an administration in the Obama administration that are science deniers when it comes to harnessing America's energy resources and potential to create good-paying jobs for our economy and for our future,' Jindal said. 'Right now we've got an administration whose policies are holding our economy hostage.'" *

The Arrogance of Creationism (5)
In this final episode of The Arrogance of Creationism, we get to the root of what motivates creationism. (You don’t get a prize for guessing what that might be.)
While this isn’t exactly news, it’s only fitting that I finally bring up this elephant in the room. This is because it allows us to tie together everything that has been discussed so far, and also because it allows us to look at what I think is the most arrogant aspect of creationism: the fact that at its root, it is hypocritical. Creationists, not only are you full of shit, you KNOW that you’re full of shit, yet you claim that you know better than those of us who study these topics for a living. Creationists use the Bible to defend their intellectual laziness, hypocrisy, and arrogance, and that just rubs me the wrong way.

21 Important Moments In The Life of An Atheist
Important moments in the life of an atheist:
- When you go to bed without saying your prayers for the first time
- When you wake up the next morning and realize you're not dead
- The first time you tell someone else you don't believe in a God -- without fear
- When someone asks you where you go to church and you respond with, "I don't"
- When you're the only person with your eyes open during prayers at Thanksgiving Dinner
- Better yet, when you notice other people with their eyes open and you share a little smile
- The first time you sleep in on a Sunday morning
- When someone sneezes and you respond with "Gesundheit"
- When you eat your first baby
- When you realize that God's not going to make your tough situation better and that your life is entirely in your control
- When you break a ritual that you always did when you were religious, like a ex-Muslim woman taking off her hijab for good.
- The first time you don't say "So help me god" in an oath or "Under God" in the Pledge
- When someone tells you you're an atheist because you just want to sin.
- When Jehovah's Witnesses knock on your door and your first thought is... come right in. We're gonna have a fun conversation.
- When you notice celebrities win an award and they don't thank God on stage
- When you come out as an atheist on Facebook and suddenly lose several friends
- Or you find some friends who say, "Me too!"
- When you realize that most of the people you know believe in nonsense
- When you're on a date with someone you find really attractive... but you lose complete interest when they tell you about their faith
- When you drive past a Chick-fil-A even though you're craving waffle fries
- When you realize that you know more about the Bible then most of the Christians you've ever met

Eric Hovind can't debate the evidence
Eric Hovind has begun moving away from the scientific are of debate into the philosophical one because he has realized that bastardizing science isn't convincing.
However, in Eric Hovind's case, I think that he's using arguments that assume God's existence because his own beliefs come from his assumption since childhood that God exists, so of course this type of argument is going to seem convincing to him.

Bedtime Bible Stories (that will terrify your kids!)
Children raised in Christian homes are almost always surrounded by beautiful and inspiring tales hand-picked by parents for bedtime. They're inspired by Jesus' miracles. They learn about Zacchaeus and the sycamore tree. They sing about Joshua and the walls of Jericho. They read the joyous tale of Noah's Ark and the boat filled with (often colorfully-drawn) animals.
In this podcast, we talk with Joey Kirkman, co-author of "Bedtime Bible Stories," about the darker tales of scripture and his recent book (complete with parental advisory label), and we take your calls and emails on the bible tales that might just keep Christian children wide awake with terror when the lights go out.

Myq Kaplan, Comedian - Friendly Atheist Podcast
Myq Kaplan is a comedian who has appeared on Last Comic Standing and every late night talk show you can think of. He’s known for his brilliant wordplay as well as his self-deprecating humor. His albums “Vegan Mind Meld” and “Meat Robot” are absolutely hilarious, but his latest show “Small, Dork and Handsome” is, in my opinion, his best one yet. It’s on Netflix right now and you’re gonna want to watch it… after we’re done with this interview.
We spoke with Myq about why most comedians seem to be non-religious, whether his jokes are ever truly finished, and what he learned from Louis C.K

Do Atheists Hate God?
I don't talk about God because I know He exists; I talk about God because I know you exist. Movies like "God's Not Dead" grossly misrepresent atheists. Allow me to make a few corrections. You're free to express your religious beliefs; I wouldn't want to take that from you.
Your beliefs are not free from my criticism. Don't think for a second that just because I freely give my criticisms, that I'm a secret believer. That isn't even logical. Have some empathy. Understand that I'm critical of your beliefs for many reasons: they affect my life, they're untrue, and I simply find it interesting. Fair enough?

ATHEISTS HAVE NO MORALS!
Apparently atheists can't be moral. Only an ancient book of fairytales and lies gives you the ability to distinguish right from wrong. I can't even make an innocent video raising money for a good cause without being attacked by religious people. Awesome.

Why a smartphone is your friend at church
That's why your phone is the best thing you can take to church. Not because you can play games the whole time, but because it allows you to fact-check the pastor in real time.
It's kind of a game. If the pastor says, "I want to tell you a true story," be ready to do a little Google search. If the pastor says something like the evidence for Creationism is overwhelming, look up reasons why that's not true immediately.
Sure, everyone else is just sitting there, nodding, accepting whatever they're told, but you're better than that. And you have citations to back it up. And once you have them, show the people around you. Show other church leaders afterwards. Go up to the pastor later and point it out to him. Let them all know you're really paying attention -- and that's why you don't appreciate being lied to.
And then go home and document the pastor's lies online so everyone else can see them. If people actually did that, pastors would stop telling those obvious lies so quickly...

Michio Kaku: The Universe in a Nutshell
What if we could find one single equation that explains every force in the universe? Dr. Michio Kaku explores how physicists may shrink the science of the Big Bang into an equation as small as Einstein's "e=mc^2." Thanks to advances in string theory, physics may allow us to escape the heat death of the universe, explore the multiverse, and unlock the secrets of existence. While firing up our imaginations about the future, Kaku also presents a succinct history of physics and makes a compelling case for why physics is the key to pretty much everything.

Christ Against the Jews
For the first time since Bart's delivery between October 12-14, 2004, the three part lecture from the Yale University Convocation 2004 has been retrieved from Yale's video archives, and edited for Bart's readers. Almost three hours of lectures include, "Christ Come in the Flesh," "Christ The Divine Man," and "Christ Against the Jews." The central theme of the Kent Shaffer Lectures was "Christ in the Early Christian Tradition: Texts Disputed and Apocryphal." Bart outlined the primary ways in which early Christian groups tried to restrict readings of the ancient Christian manuscripts to suit their own purposes.

Poor Elderly Woman Asks The Wrong TV Preacher For Financial Advice
"Televangelist Pat Robertson on Thursday told an 80-year-old viewer, who gave more than 10 percent to the church, that she should get a job or sell stuff on eBay if she couldn’t afford her medical bills.
“My husband and I are in our 80s and have been tithing for many years,” the viewer wrote Robertson in a letter. “We both love the Lord and give willingly and our tithe is over 10 percent.”
The woman said that she thanked God for her blessings, “but we never have an extra penny after our monthly bills are paid.”*

Why I Think Jesus Didn't Exist: A Historian Explains the Evidence That Changed His Mind
Dr. Richard Carrier flew in from California to lecture the UNCG Atheists, Agnostics, and Skeptics on the historicity of Christ. The historicity of Christ has appeared in the public consciousness over the last few years because of such individuals such as Robert Price and Dr. Carrier. This topic deals with the analysis of historical data to determine if Jesus existed as an actual person.
Evidence, miracles and the existence of Jesus
The vast majority of Biblical historians believe there is evidence sufficient to place Jesus’ existence beyond reasonable doubt. Many believe the New Testament documents alone suffice firmly to establish Jesus as an actual, historical figure. I question these views. In particular, I argue (i) that the three most popular criteria by which various non-miraculous New Testament claims made about Jesus are supposedly corroborated are not sufficient, either singly or jointly, to place his existence beyond reasonable doubt, and (ii) that a prima facie plausible principle concerning how evidence should be assessed – a principle I call the contamination principle – entails that, given the large proportion of uncorroborated miracle claims made about Jesus in the New Testament documents, we should, in the absence of independent evidence for an historical Jesus, remain sceptical about his existence.

What to do if your kids become religious?
It's a scary thought if you're an atheist parent. Your kid comes home one day and says, "Dad, I found God! I'm going to church now"
How disappointing.
What do you do in that situation? I'm going to take some tips from my friend Dale McGowan, who's written a lot about atheist parenting.
First of all, let's reverse the situation since many of us have been in that position. You're an atheist, your parents are religious, and you share that with them. Your parents hopefully raised you well. They want you to make your own decisions and be happy, and you've come across a belief system that makes sense to you.
Their reaction shouldn't matter. They should love you no matter what, even if they disagree with you.
So if your daughter says she's religious now, who cares? Love her. It's none of your business and it makes her happy.
But that's not the answer you want to hear, so let's keep talking.
What religion is she? There's a big difference between joining an evangelical megachurch and a unitarian church. Is she more of a Deist or a hard core fundamentalist?
Let's say she goes the crazy Mark Driscoll is my hero path. Even if she does, who cares? Love her.
If you want, feel free to have a respectful debate. Especially if they're younger and open to a conversation about these things. Challenge them. They believe in God? Well what about people who believe in different Gods? Are they wrong? Why?
I hope you do the same thing if your child says she doesn't believe in God. Oh? But so many people do believe, so are all those people wrong?
Plays devil's advocate!
By the way, religion isn't the only serious thing your kids are going to decide that you may have strong opinions about. What about who they date? What they major in? Who they vote for? You can't control it all. But hopefully, you raised your kids well enough so that they use good judgment. Religion works the same way. Teach them to be good people, and let the chips fall where they may.
What's your alternative, anyway? Are you seriously gonna say I demand you also not believe in God? That's the same sort of awful indoctrination so many of us want to get away from! Who cares if your children are atheists if they didn't come to that conclusion on their own?
And if you really want your kids to become atheists, then I would just make one suggestion: Have them read the Bible. That should do the trick
--

Christ Come in the Flesh (Shaffer Lectures)
For the first time since Bart D. Ehrman's delivery between October 12-14, 2004, the three part lecture from the Yale University Convocation 2004 has been retrieved from Yale's video archives, and edited for Bart's readers. Almost three hours of lectures include, "Christ Come in the Flesh," "Christ The Divine Man," and "Christ Against the Jews." The central theme of the Kent Shaffer Lectures was "Christ in the Early Christian Tradition: Texts Disputed and Apocryphal." Bart D. Ehrman outlined the primary ways in which early Christian groups tried to restrict readings of the ancient Christian manuscripts to suit their own purposes.
A graduate of Wheaton College (Illinois), Professor Bart Ehrman received both his Masters of Divinity and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where his 1985 doctoral dissertation was awarded magna cum laude.

Should we try to actively deconvert believers?
Should we try to actively deconvert our families and friends? This time it will happen!

Pastor Barred From Leading Football Team In Prayer
"A recent decision to ban chaplains from leading prayers with Orange County public school football teams only hurts the students, a local pastor said Wednesday.
"The district told school leaders and athletic directors last week that chaplains would no longer be allowed after receiving a complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
Pastor Troy Schmidt, who has been working with the Olympia High School team for at least six years, replacing other chaplains, said he still plans to prepare meals for the team with his church, First Baptist of Windermere." *

12 Best Things About HELL
It's okay, though! Because it turns out there are some really awesome things about Hell.
- With all the scientists there, it's gotta be air conditioned by now.
- All your friends will be there
- You don't have to shovel snow in the winter
- No one's ever gonna tell you, "I'll pray for you" ever again
- If all those fundamentalist pastors are right, expect free rock concerts every night. And dancing.
- Two words: Open bar!
- Say hello to Christopher Hitchens
- Natural hot tubs
- We all get to point and laugh at Fred Phelps
- Tons of Mormons. Turns out they picked the wrong team.
- You can become a greeter and say hello to all the Christians who thought they were going somewhere else!
- You'll get a really nice tan
There are some downsides, though: Internet service is still provided by Comcast. Cause you KNOW they're gonna be there.

Oceans of Ignorance
In this latest thrashing of Ray Comfort, we examine about four minutes of his 30+ minute “documentary,” “Noah and the Last Days.”
Combined with my other videos, “The Arrogance of Creationism (3)” and “Ray Comfort Thinks Eclipses are MAGIC!” this concludes my response to his pathetic excuse for a documentary. In this video, we examine the origins of Earth’s oceans and Ray’s interviewing techniques, as well as his thoroughness in reading basic science magazines.
You don’t win a prize for guessing that there’s dishonest editing where the former is concerned, and quote-mining where the latter is concerned.

Today's Surveillance Society is Beyond Orwellian
Brad Templeton argues that we're all a part of a surveillance apparatus that would be beyond the imagination George Orwell. The problem, he says, is the belief that privacy and security are mutually exclusive. Templeton is a Board Member and Former Chair of Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Track Chair for Computing at Singularity University.
We went, and by we I meant all of us, we went and built this wonderful Internet thing you've heard of. And we're all using it all the time for all of our lives. We're buying things on it, we're having sex over it, we're communicating with our friends, just so many aspects of our life are all going on this network and we've spent immense amounts of money to build it and build all the handheld devices and the computers, all the software. But what has the government done and what has big business done? They've turned it into the world's greatest surveillance apparatus, a surveillance apparatus that even George Orwell probably wouldn't have dreamed of. And that wasn't why we built it. We didn't make it to be a surveillance apparatus. But unfortunately we've learned, thanks to Edward Snowden, who has revealed what the NSA has been doing, that the NSA and other spy agencies around the world are doing is, they're making it a surveillance apparatus; they're tracking all of the phone calls you make in terms of records and where you were and who you talked to, and in many cases recording the actual voice.
They are, because they say they need to find a needle in haystack, looking at the entire haystack. They're looking at everything innocent people do in order to find guilty people. And nobody thinks that we shouldn't have police and intelligence agents whose job it is to find bad guys and stop bad guys. That's not a question. But a free society makes a decision for itself. It makes a decision to limit the power of its police and it's intelligence agents. It makes the decision to let some bad things happen, to let some guilty people get away in order to avoid punishing innocent people, doing surveillance on people who are innocent and there's no reason to suspect them. But unfortunately that's not what happens. And unfortunately Mr. Snowden has shown us just the depth to which it's going on. And that's the biggest challenge we're facing, how to make societies realize that we do need our privacy and we do need to limit the power of these organizations. We do need to draw a line somewhere. And more then draw a line, we need to make people think there's not necessarily some trade-off between privacy and security, that it's possible sometimes to keep your rights and gain security at the same time, it's just harder. The easy thing to do is just make everyone give up their rights. So that's one of the biggest challenges going forward.
Now, we also have challenges in free speech. We're seeing more and more countries around the world trying to sensors their Internets, trying to censor what people do. Getting as extreme as Hosni Mubarak shutting off the Internet when a revolution was coming. And you may think that "Oh, well that's Egypt," but in fact just before that President Obama had asked for an ability to have a kill switch for the Internet. Now, not of course doing a revolution, he said if we're being attacked or something and we need to shut off we would like to have that. So we're seeing people as well self censor. Disturbingly, because of the Snowden revolutions, we're seeing the press afraid of what might happen to them if they report these stories and they're starting to censor themselves and that's affecting free speech. We're also seeing a big effort for people to take control of our computers and have them do things that we necessarily don't want them to do, all in the service of protecting a movie when you download it so that you can't easily copy it to someone else. Which has never worked; it's never actually stopped people from copying movies. But we have a lot of forces pushing for laws and technology to basically lock down your computer so not so that you can trust it but so that movie studios and governments and so on can trust that you can't do things on it. And that is something that computer engineers all know is never going to work and is just going to make things broken.
