Miracle Marks - Koran signs on boy?

Thousands of pilgrims are flocking to a small village in Russia's republic of Dagestan after versus from the Koran apparently started appearing on the skin of a nine-month-old boy.

While doctors are searching for a medical explanation, the predominantly Muslim society is celebrating what it sees as a miracle.

David Deutsch: A new way to explain explanation

For tens of thousands of years our ancestors understood the world through myths, and the pace of change was glacial. The rise of scientific understanding transformed the world within a few centuries. Why? Physicist David Deutsch proposes a subtle answer.

French court convicts Church of Scientology "Smurfs of fraud" & not ban the Org Activities of fraud

The Church of Scientology in France has been found guilty of defrauding its followers and its leaders have been handed fines and suspended prison sentences. However, the court did not ban the organisations activities in France. A Paris court on Tuesday convicted the two principal institutions of the Church of Scientology in France of organised fraud, but stopped short of banning the groups activities in France.

The court also levied fines totalling 600,000 euros and handed suspended prison sentences to four French Scientology officials. Scientologys leader in France, Alain Rosenberg, received a two-year suspended sentence and a fine of 30,000 euros.

A fifteen year process examining fossils 4.4 million years old has revealed some earth shattering information about our own evolution. But what exactly does it mean for us? Paula Zone hosts a round table discussion with the scientist that discovered "Adri" Ardipithecus.

Quranic Verses 'Appear' on Baby's Body

another mind control experiment using religion on the masses. and once again abusing children in the process!

Randolph Nesse, Society and Health

At least three kinds of evolutionary applications are transforming medicine and public health.

First are well-established population genetic and phylogenetic evolutionary methods that are now being used on new genetic data.

Second are attempts to address evolutionary questions about why natural selection left our bodies vulnerable. Some of the most powerful applications are in infectious disease, not just antibiotic resistance but evolutionary models that show how vaccines can shape pathogens to make them worse killers.

Thirdly, Darwins discovery means that our fundamental metaphor for the body has been incorrect.

Thinking about the body as if it is a machine designed by an engineer conceals the reality of a body shaped by natural selection, vastly better than any machine can be in many respects, but hopelessly flawed in other ways that no engineer would tolerate for a minute. These insights are changing medical research and they will improve human health.

Lecture: Darwin's universal impact

Was Charles Darwin the most revolutionary scientist ever? If, by revolutionary, we mean the scientist whose discovery initiated the most seismic overturning of pre-existing science, the honour would at least be contested by Newton, Einstein and the architects of quantum theory. Those same physicists might have outclassed Darwin in sheer intellectual fire power. But Darwin probably did revolutionize the world view of people outside science more comprehensively than any other scientist.

Richard Dawkins, Darwin's universal impact

I want to recognize four bridges to evolutionary understanding. The first bridge is to natural selection as a force for weeding out the unfit. The second bridge is the recognition that natural selection can drive evolutionary change. Bridge number three leads to the imaginative grasp of the importance of natural selection in explaining all of life, in all its speciose richness. Bridge number four is the bridge to public understanding and appreciation. Darwin crossed it alone, in 1859, by writing On the Origin of Species. The fifth bridge, which Darwin himself never crossed was neo-Darwinism or what I shall rename digital Darwinism because the essence of Mendelian genetics is that it is digital. As crests get longer, or eyes rounder, or tails gaudier, what is really being carved by natural selection is the gene pool. As mutation and sexual recombination enrich the gene pool, the chisels of natural selection carve it into shape, working away through geological time. It is an image that might have seemed strange to Darwin. But I think he would have come to love it.

These include Victor Stenger, Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris.

Discovering Ardipithecus

Every Human being has one common question, where did we come from? Where do we come from, it's a profound human question. From the beginning we human beings seem so different from the animal world.

Then came Darwin, he concluded that human beings like all living creatures evolved from natural selection. But he didn't have the human fossils to support his ideas. Now from a remote African desert, buried for more then four million years comes the fossil evidence that Darwin could have only imagined

It's a Miracle!

OK...these are some extreme examples, but we've all seen religion insist that "miracles" are proof of God's intervention in the mundane, leaving the rest to...um...Satan.

Meditation is a Very Simple Phenomenon

When you are not doing anything at all -- bodily, mentally, on no level -- when all activity has ceased and you simply are, just being, that's what meditation is. You cannot do it, you cannot practice it; you have only to understand it.

Whenever you can find time for just being, drop all doing. Thinking is also doing, concentration is also doing, contemplation is also doing. Even if for a single moment you are not doing anything and you are just at your center, utterly relaxed -- that is meditation. And once you have got the knack of it, you can remain in that state as long as you want; finally you can remain in that state for twenty-four hours a day.

Once you have become aware of the way your being can remain undisturbed, then slowly you can start doing things, keeping alert that your being is not stirred. That is the second part of meditation. First, learning how just to be, and then learning little actions: cleaning the floor, taking a shower, but keeping yourself centered. Then you can do complicated things.

For example, I am speaking to you, but my meditation is not disturbed. I can go on speaking, but at my very center there is not even a ripple; it is just silent, utterly silent.

So meditation is not against action.
It is not that you have to escape from life.
It simply teaches you a new way of life:
You become the center of the cyclone.

Your life goes on, it goes on really more intensely -- with more joy, with more clarity, more vision, more creativity -- yet you are aloof, just a watcher on the hills, simply seeing all that is happening around you.
You are not the doer, you are the watcher.

That's the whole secret of meditation, that you become the watcher. Doing continues on its own level, there is no problem: chopping wood, drawing water from the well. You can do all small and big things; only one thing is not allowed and that is, your centering should not be lost.

That awareness, that watchfulness, should remain absolutely unclouded, undisturbed.
Meditation is a very simple phenomenon.

Daniel Dennett, Human Nature and Belief

Darwin and the evolution of why?

Summary: We human beings are the only living things that can represent, transmit and criticize reasons for doing things and making things. This creates a perspective for us that we can then use to interpret all the rest of the life on the planet, cautiously. Mother natures reasons are not just like our reasons. It is our evolved capacity to ask, and answer, Why questions that gives us, in the end, the kinds of free will worth wanting, the kinds that no other animal has.

Christopher Hitchens and Tony Jones: Does Religion Poison Everything?

If there were any doubts about writer and general provocateur Christopher Hitchens ability to pull a crowd, they were entirely dispelled by the sold-out opening night of the first ever Festival of Dangerous Ideas. Presented by the Sydney Opera House and the St James Ethics Centre, the Festival brought together some of the more controversial thinkers from Australia and around the world.

Hitchens keynote address, followed by a discussion with our own Tony Jones, was an expansion on his bestselling, "God is Not Great: Religion Poisons Everything". Hitchens was at his polemical best, delivering a beautifully constructed speech supporting his argument that religion is not only completely implausible, but often actively destructive.

Christopher Hitchens' other books include "Letters to a Young Contrarian", "Why Orwell Matters" and "The Missionary Position: Mother Theresa in Theory and Practice." He also writes a regular column in "Vanity Fair".
