Libety Counsel

Is Thanksgiving a Jewish Concept?

This is of course Thanksgiving week, but are people actually thinking about giving thanks? Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of Jewish Treats' parent organization, the National Jewish Outreach Program, says that he considers Thanksgiving to be somewhat of a Jewish holiday. After all, it is believed that the Pilgrims got the idea of saying thanks from the Hebrew Bible.

But there is a difference between Thanksgiving and what the Jewish notion of thanks is all about. Rabbi Yochanan, a 3rd century sage of the Talmud, states: "Would that humans pray all day long," (Berachot 21a). Really, we should be saying thank you to God throughout the day. Think about your relationship with your parents. We should regularly call our parents and say thank you for all they've done for us. The same applies to our relationship with God. But, we're also supposed to be contributing members of society.

We need to work and cannot necessarily pray all day. So the rabbis set up a prayer system where we thank God morning, afternoon and evening, as if we are thanking God throughout the day. So when you eat your turkey this Thanksgiving remember to thank God. Thank God on Thanksgiving and everyday after that, as often as you possibly can. Happy Thanksgiving from those of us at Jewish Treats!

Biology: Jonathan McLatchie vs. PZ Myers

Note the Gish Gallop, the "I'm jus' asking" tactic, and the pants-ruining terror on his face. It's the most nonsensical question about embryology he could have asked, and here's why: a mouse HOX gene can be transplanted to a fly, and still be functional to produce the homologous structure. Lack of correlation? Holy frijoles, you have to be kidding me.

Jonathan McLatchie doesn't communicate very clearly and is rambling, so his questions is in caption.

Was PZ too mean to Jonathan McLatchie? I'd probably argue that he wasn't mean enough. It might help a lot to understand what Jonathan wrote on his blog prior to PZ's appearance:

Jonathan McLatchie: You missed a rare opportunity to engage with someone on a topic on which they are an expert. What a shame that your political and religious views allowed you to miss out on the genuine scientific discussion, instead trying to score cheap points for your cause. You'll never be a proper scientist if you put ideology before open inquiry.

Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

What is Christianity ? A Visual Explanation

What is Christianity?

Christianity teaches that there is only one God and that "in the beginning" this God spoke the entire universe into existence.

On earth God creates two people, a man and woman, named Adam and Eve.
They are to tend the garden in which they live, and are free to eat from any tree except the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Sometime later Eve is tempted by Satan and eats from this tree. Then Adam eats from it too. It's at this point that the two become aware, and "understand good and evil," evidenced by a new shame of their nakedness.
Disobeying God results in them being expelled from the Garden of Eden and suffering the effect of death.
Many generations after Adam, God chooses a man named Abraham to make into a great nation. A nation that will one day birth a Messiah to release mankind from the bondage of sin and death.
Our modern calendar splits time at the approximate date of the birth of Jesus who Chrisitians believe is the promised Messiah.
According to the NT, a collection of writings from early followers, Jesus is born to a virgin named Mary, lives a sinless life and then willingly sacrifices himself as the substitutionary atonement for the sins of mankind. The word atonement is used to describe an act that pays for or erases one's sins and transgressions.
3 days later, Jesus defeats death by resurrecting from the dead to open heaven to those who believe in him and trust him for the forgiveness of their sins.
The resurrected Christ appears to many people over a span of forty days before he bodily ascends into heaven. From there he rules and reigns with God the Father and sends the Holy Spirit to teach his followers.
It is also maintained that one day Jesus will return to this earth to judge all humans, living and dead, and grant eternal life to those who put faith in Him and eternal death for those who don't.
Christians call the message of Jesus Christ the Gospel, meaning the good news.
And that is Christianity.

Relic to promote motherhood in Russia

A sacred relic, believed by some Orthodox Christians to be the belt of the Virgin Mary, is drawing thousands of Russian pilgrims in search of a cure for a myriad of ailments including infertility. But the treasure -- a 2,000 year old cincture woven from camel fur - is also having political resonance.

Russian leaders have called the country's shrinking population a matter of national security and now the influential Orthodox church has joined the fight.

It wants to take the relic to pregnancy centres to discourage women from having abortions and save mother Russia by promoting motherhood.

The Science and Philosophy of Free Will

Are advances in the scientific understanding of the human mind shaping our conception of free will? If so, how? Are the cognitive sciences revealing that free will does not exist, or are they merely shedding light on the inner workings of agency? "Beyond" space and time, omniscience, omnibenevolence, omnipotence, omnipresence, freewill, a grand plan, divine intervention, heaven, hell, souls, miracles, and life after death are completely invented concepts that have severe logical problems that are explained away by the word "supernatural", which is also completely made up.

The Values We All Stand For

--

NOTE 1: "In God We Trust" first started to appear on a few US coins during the Civil War. However, the motives for these inclusions were entirely different in nature. At that time, there were, to my knowledge, no active atheists in American culture. The inclusion of "In God We Trust" on US coins was gradual and met with resistance by prominent American theists, such as Theodore Roosevelt, as being sacrilegious.

By comparison, the 1957 changes were drastic, sweeping, and specifically invoked to combat the atheism of the Soviet Union. Before, some coins were allowed to not have the phrase and no paper bills had it; after, ALL American money, both coin and paper were REQUIRED to contain the slogan. Further, the changes in the pledge and the motto happened almost simultaneously with this change.

These changes were overtly anti-atheist in nature: "In these days when imperialistic and materialistic Communism seeks to attack and destroy freedom, it is proper" to "remind all of us of this self-evident truth" that "as long as this country trusts in God, it will prevail."

--

NOTE 2: "annuit cœptis" ["He (God) has favored our undertakings"] first appeared on the US seal in 1782. Again, there were, to my knowledge, no active atheists in American culture at that time. The inclusion appears to be largely impersonal and deistic in nature. Given its historical meaning and lack of anti-atheist sentiment, I personally would not necessarily be opposed to its continued inclusion. It does however, appear to be arrogant and supportive of the American imperialism that fueled such atrocities as the Indian Massacres.

--

NOTE 3: The origins of references to God in the federal government are largely irrelevant to the points made in the video starting at 1:23. No matter where these references came from, they exclude the identities of a large population of contributing Americans from the national identity. A government that we all create together should not include language that explicitly excludes any of us.

Why Christians Fight To Stay Alive

Neil deGrasse Tyson - Authors @ Google

The Authors@Google program welcomed Neil deGrasse Tyson to Google's New York office to discuss his book, "The Pluto Files".

About the Book:

"The New York Times best-selling author chronicles America's irrational love affair with Pluto, man's best celestial friend.

In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union voted Pluto out of planethood. Far from the sun, tiny, and eccentric in orbit, it's a wonder Pluto has any fans. Yet during the mounting debate over Pluto's status, Americans rallied behind the extraterrestrial underdog. The year of Pluto's discovery, Disney created an irresistible pup by the same name, and, as one NASA scientist put it, Pluto was "discovered by an American for America." Pluto is entrenched in our cultural, patriotic view of the cosmos, and
Neil deGrasse Tyson is on a quest to discover why.

Only Tyson can tell this story: he was involved in the first exhibits to demote Pluto, and, consequently, Pluto lovers have freely shared their opinions with him, including endless hate mail from third graders. In his typically witty way, Tyson explores the history of planet classification and America's obsession with the "planet" that's recently been judged a dwarf."

This event took place on February 9, 2009.

Christian Right: Ban Gays to Help Economy?

Despite the fact that America has been plagued with poverty, the Christian right don't think we should spend all of our time worrying about the less fortunate. Instead they propose that lawmakers move their efforts away from the economy and unemployment, and place "values" at the top of the political agenda.

These people kicked off their three day summit called the Values Voter Summit. RT Correspondent Kristine Frazao says this group is calling to bring God back into schools and ban gay marriages. She explains summit might just be a turning point for the party to take on more social issues.

Man beheaded in carpark as per Muslim Shariah law

Dozens of people have watched the public beheading of a Sudanese man in a Saudi Arabian carpark after he was found guilty in a secret trial of being a sorcerer.

Shocking vision of the execution has emerged, showing Abdul Hamid Bin Hussain Bin Moustafa al-Fakki crouched on his knees and blindfolded as he awaits his death.

The vision shows the executioner delivering the single blow that decapitates the man.

Abdul Hamid is understood to have been arrested in 2005 after he was entrapped by a man working for the Mutawa'een (Islamic religious police)

He was asked to concoct a spell that would cause the officer's father to leave his second wife.

Mr Hamid reportedly carried out the curse in exchange for 6,000 Saudi Arabian riyals (about $1500).

In a secret trial, where he was not allowed legal representation, he was sentenced to death by the General Court in Medina in March 2007.

Mr Hamid, who was killed on September 20, is believed to have been the 44th person executed in Saudi Arabia this year - and the 11th foreign national.

Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's Director for the Middle East and North Africa, heavily criticised the killing.

"Abdul Hamid's execution is appalling as is Saudi Arabia's continuing use of this most cruel and extreme penalty," he told The Daily Mail.
The charity campaigned on Mr Hamid's behalf.

Mike Bickle: Sexual Immorality Invites Satan

Christian Mike Bickle on sexual immorality and the "homosexual agenda"

The authors of the Bible

Bart D. Ehrman takes you on a journey to the ancient world and the forgery battles that have raged through the centuries. Bart D. Ehrman contends that the New Testament is riddled with contradictions about the life of Jesus and his significance.

Bart D. Ehrman has provided compelling evidence that early Christianity was a collection of competing schools of thought and that the central doctrines we know today were the inventions of theologians living several centuries after Christ.

Bart D. Ehrman is a distinguished and prominent religious scholar, and has also appeared on NPR, "The Colbert Report" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."
