Creationist Signs at the Bill Nye / Ken Ham Debate

The debate between Bill Nye (aka 'The Science Guy) and Creation Museum president Ken Ham has people (from fundamentalist Christians to Atheists and everything in between) buzzing today. What should we make of the signs creationists made for those who believe in evolution?

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey - Premiere Pre-Screening w/ Live Q&A

"The universe doesn't really make anything in ones," says Neil deGrasse Tyson in response to an audience question. "The Earth is one of multiple planets. The Sun is one of billions of other Suns. Our Galaxy is one of a hundred-billion galaxies. Our universe? Perhaps [it is] one in a multiverse. And if you follow this line of reasoning perhaps the multiverse is just one of many."
Seth MacFarlane's eyes pop out of his head and says, "You just blew my fucking mind!"

Science and humor, a lethal combination.

This captures the mood during this Q&A of the Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey Pre-Screening streamed live on March 4, 2014. This panel includes Host Neil deGrasse Tyson, Executive Producer/Writer/Director Ann Druyan, Executive Producer Seth MacFarlane, Executive Producer Mitchell Cannold, Executive Producer/Director Brannon Braga and Co-Executive Producer Jason Clark.

'Homo Demons' Pastor Targets The Young Turks & We Can't Stop Laughing

"A so-called birther pastor in New York this week accused President Barack Obama of a plot to have "white homo demons" lure African-American men away from African-American women.

In a YouTube video posted on Tuesday, Atlah World Missionary Church Rev. James David Manning said that he had displayed the following sign outside his Harlem church: "Obama has released the homo demons on the black man. Look out black woman. A white homo may take your man."

"Obama has released these demons, particularly upon the black males," he explained. "This homosexual demon, hoping to influence as many black males to subscribe to ideas that homosexual perverted LGBT as possible.""* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

Creationist Outrage Over Cosmos With Neil DeGrasse Tyson

*A creationist has reviewed the new "Cosmos" reboot, featuring astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and it may come as no surprise that she wasn't terribly impressed. "If the first segment is any indication, ["Cosmos"] will attempt to package unconditional blind faith in evolution as scientific literacy in an effort to create interest in science," said Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell, a physician and Answers In Genesis researcher. She praises some aspects of the program, such as its "colorful" graphics and "charismatic" storytelling, but Mitchell complains that the program spent too much time describing phenomena that contradict biblical teachings...*

The Biggest Loser's Matt Hoover competing and finishing the Ford Ironman in Hawaii. An inspiration to all.

There's a saying that goes something along the lines of "The only time you should be looking down on someone is when you're helping them up".

No matter if you're a 8 hour finisher, or somebody like Matt that completed it in just a bit over the cutoff, every TRUE "Ironman" believes this. I don't think anybody on one of those courses would think twice about helping a fellow racer. Whether it be literally helping them up, or cheering them into the finish chute.

Theologian says analysis of Catholicism is verging on racism

In a debate on BBC Radio Ulster Sunday Sequence, Catholic theologian Tina Beattie said that Atheist Ireland chairperson Michael Nugent was "verging on a very dangerous kind of dare I say almost European racism" in his analysis of Catholic demographics and its influence on Catholic fundamentalism.

In the show, these extracts were intermingled with other comments.

Christians Upset Over Noah's Ark Russell Crowe Movie

*According to The Wrap, Paramount Pictures has edited Darren Aronofsky's Noah — which stars Russell Crowe in the titular role — in order to avoid offending Christian viewers. Aronofsky allegedly told an associate that he was "not happy" when he learned that Paramount had appended a disclaimer to both the film and promotional materials for it. At the request of the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), Paramount added a disclaimer which reads, in part, that "[t]he film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis."

NRB board member Phil Cooke told The Wrap that the disclaimer was necessary because the film is "historically inaccurate." It is, Cooke said, "more of an inspired movie than an exact retelling." Cooke is not the only Christian to have concerns about the film...*

In the 70s, 80s and early 90s, a phenomenon known today as The Satanic Panic swept the United States, as the evangelical Christian community charged that a vast underground network of Satanists were controlling large parts of society.

Believers were warned about products subsidized by Satan, including over-the-counter items like detergent and toothpaste, and there was a huge focus on toys, games and cartoons infected with demons.

In this show, we talk about the Satanic Panic of the past, and we look at modern-day charges of Satanic media, products and influences in our culture.

Knocking on Havens Door

"Last year, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)—a group of the world's top economies—decided it was time to crack down on international tax shenanigans through meaningful reform. These legal loopholes allow major tech corporations to move money around on paper through a series of shell corporations in Ireland, Bermuda, and the Netherlands. The companies save big, and "best" of all, it's currently legal! This widespread strategy of moving money around involves two specific tactics better known as the "Dutch Sandwich" and the "Double Irish." Starting February 3, the Task Force on the Digital Economy is set to convene at the OECD's office in Paris to discuss the global corporate response to these potential plans to rein in questionable tax practices. Last week, the OECD published various corporate responses to its initial proposal—needless to say, companies don't want to stop what they're doing...".*

Christians Must Bake Penis Cakes After AZ Veto?

*Tea Party Nation president Judson Phillips reacted to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer's veto of that state's SB1062 bill Thursday with a searing email to supporters that was also posted on the group's website. According to Phillips, Brewer's refusal to sign the bill that would have made it legal for businesses to discriminate against gays and lesbians means that Christians in Arizona will essentially be slaves. Phillips foresees a world in which bakers are forced to "create a cake for a homosexual wedding that has a giant phallic symbol on it" and photographers must "photograph a homosexual wedding where the participants decide they want to be nude or engage in sexual behavior." He asks, "Would they force a Jewish photographer to work a Klan or Nazi event? How about forcing a Muslim caterer to work a pork barbeque dinner?" "It is tyranny on the march," he writes...*

Atheism: Just Another Religion?

As non-theists and freethought groups organize, gather and even sometimes attend things like the "Sunday assembly," the charge is often heard that the godless are acting religious, that their adherence to science is "faith," and that their gatherings are just anothe form of church.

In this show, we explore the question. And we hear from David Silverman, President of one of the largest atheist (religious?) organizations in the world.

Bill Nye Ken Ham Debate Summed Up In Two Very Telling Answers

"On Tuesday evening more than 3 million people tuned in to watch "Science Guy" Bill Nye debate Ken Ham, founder of the biblically literalist Creation Museum on the topic "Is creation a viable model of origins?"

Is creation a viable model of origins in today's modern, scientific era? Creation Museum head Ken Ham is joined at the Creation Museum by Emmy Award-winning science educator and CEO of the Planetary Society Bill Nye.
Mr. Ham believes that the world was created over a six 24-hour-day period about 6,000 years ago, and that all living land animals today are descended from those taken aboard Noah's Ark some 4,500 years ago.

Nye challenged Ham's literal biblical view on several fronts, pointing out that radioisotopic and ice core data shows that the Earth has been around for far longer than the 6,000 years that Ham says it is, as does our ability to view stars that are more than 6,000 light years away. Nye also pointed out that Noah's Ark, were it constructed the way the Bible says it was, wouldn't actually stay afloat. "*

Guy Blows 0.00, Arrested Anyway, Cops Say 'So What?'

"Texas police are not backing down or apologizing for arresting a man for drunken driving, even though his Breathalyzer result showed no hint of intoxication, the Raw Story reports.

Larry Davis was arrested Jan. 13 after he ran a stop sign, the news site notes. Davis—who, officers on the scene said, appeared to be drunk—defended himself, saying that he only had one drink. He even volunteered to give a blood sample after testing 0.00 on the Breathalyzer. He ended up spending a day in jail.

His blood-test results are now in, and those are also negative. Now Davis is attempting to clear his name and arrest record, which, along with being costly, could take months."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.

Jesus Is Coming Back With A Big Gun!

*Jesus is coming -- and he'll be carrying a really big gun when he does. That's what former U.S. Lieutenant General William G. "Jerry" Boykin thinks, according to a speech he gave on behalf of the conservative Family Research Council at the WallBuilders' Pro-Family Legislators Conference, in which he describes his vision of the Second Coming of Christ, that he believes will be led by a blood-stained, gun-toting Jesus armed to the teeth with an AR-15 assault rifle...*

Katy Perry 'Dark Horse' video & Why Muslims Want It Banned

"An online petition launched on Tuesday by Muslims around the world demands that Katy Perry's music video for "Dark Horse," in which a 'God' pendant is seen being burned, be removed from Youtube.

At 1:15 into the video, a man is shown wearing two pendants, one of which says God in Arabic. Perry, who plays a queen-like figure in the video, zaps the man with lightening and he disintegrates into sand; his pendant disappearing with him.

Petitioners argue that the pop diva is meant to symbolize the opposition of God, making the video blasphemous.

The video, which has a cartoonish Ancient Egypt theme, features other nonsensical aspects such as cat-human hybrid as body guards with whom Perry pole dances with, a dog which walks on its hind legs, and Perry eating spicy junk food."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down

(Really) Bad News For Religious Conservatives

*One third of young people who left organized religion did so because of anti-gay teachings or treatment within their churches, according to a new study. While not surprising—it's no secret that younger Americans are more accepting of gay people—it puts a number on the cost anti-gay policies can have on organizations. A full 31% of young people (ages 18 to 33) who left organized religion said "negative teachings" or "negative treatment" of gay people was a "somewhat important" or "very important" factor in their departure, as surveyed by the Public Religion Research Institute. ..* What do atheists think about this? Quoting The Bible To Hate Gay People? Be Careful...

The national spotlight is now shining on Arizona as Gov. Jan Brewer (R) weighs whether to sign the controversial "license to discriminate" bill (SB 1062) passed by the legislature last week. Though the potential consequences are broad, at the very least it would seemingly allow businesses to use religion as an excuse to legally refuse service to LGBT people. She'sreceiving a lot of encouragement to veto the bill from groups and individuals across the state, including from one lawmaker who even voted for it, many of the state's representatives in Congress, and the state's largest newspaper.

State Sen. Steve Pierce (R) voted for the bill, but admits now, "I screwed up. I'm trying to make it right." He does not like the "negative picture of Arizona" the bill has painted...* Is the Bible a good guide for morality? Should laws be based on Christianity? Gay Catholic Student Alleges Systematic Violation of Rights

But a year and a half later there are precisely zero GSAs in Catholic schools. Now Think Again! TV features an exlusive interview with Mississauga Catholic school student Christopher Karas who joins Justin Trottier to share explosive allegations. In his recently launched human rights complaint, Karas documents a systematic effort, directed at the higheset levels, to deny the legally enshrined rights of him and the students of Ontario.
