What's the Harm: Eliza Jane Scovill

Eliza Jane Scovill died at the age of 3. The death of any young child is a tragedy, but this event is made even more tragic by the cause of her death. I don't wish to cause her family any more grief than they have already experienced, but there is an opportunity to learn from her story, and the story of her mother. Denialism is toxic and lethal, and we must not tolerate it.

Was God a Volcano?

If you actually read how Moses (the 'important guy who god spoke face to face with, and they guy who got the 10 commandments off of God) describes 'God' in the bible, it's basically the exact description of a volcano.

Seeing as Moses is held to be a prophet in all three of the big monotheistic religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism), is it possible that the 'God' of all three of these religions was actually nothing more than a volcano?

Is it not more lightly that a bunch of desert nomads come witness a volcano, and seeing as they have never seen one before they think its 'God'. One of their number is crazy enough to go up onto the volcano, where he sees all sorts of volcanic stuff that he mis-interprets as god, and seeing as he's obviously a bit crazy anyways (y'know, how many sane people would go up onto an erupting volcano?) he has a bunch of 'revelations from God' on the mountain. When he gets down, not only does this impress the hell out of the nomads, but he tells them that he spoke to 'God' in the fire and smoke.

Moses (and co.) describing 'God' as a volcano:
Exodus 13:21
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:

Exodus 14:24
And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,

Exodus 19:16
And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

Exodus 19:18
And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

Exodus 20:18
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

Exodus 24:18
And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights

Deut. 4:11
And you came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the middle of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.

Deut. 5:4
The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the middle of the fire,

This work is in defense of the video by zomgitscriss where all she basically said was 'if the big bang and evolution are in the Koran, as many Muslims state, then why weren't these discoveries made by Muslims 1400 years ago!'

This video got taken down for 'community guideline violations' within a few hours of her putting it up, presumably by criticism-hypochondriac-Muslims who interpret any dissenting voice as 'hate-speech'.

DPRjones then mirrored this video and also had the video removed for 'community guidelines violations' within hours.

Well if this is the way youtube is going to run the forum, then it has little further value as a forum for discussion. The line is drawn.

Does The Devil Exist?

Chief exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth says Devil is in the Vatican

Sex abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church are proof that that "the Devil is at work inside the Vatican", according to the Holy See's chief exorcist.

Father Gabriele Amorth, 85, who has been the Vatican's chief exorcist for 25 years and says he has dealt with 70,000 cases of demonic possession, said that the consequences of satanic infiltration included power struggles at the Vatican as well as "cardinals who do not believe in Jesus, and bishops who are linked to the Demon".

He added: "When one speaks of 'the smoke of Satan' [a phrase coined by Pope Paul VI in 1972] in the holy rooms, it is all true including these latest stories of violence and paedophilia."

Evolution and Faith

Evolution does not require faith. Its easy to get sucked into this spiral, and it is very different on paper vs. when you're actually in the heat of a discussion. Here are some things to look out for.

Richard Dawkins on Why Evolution Trumps Creationism

He's the King of All the Atheists, and now Richard Dawkins is hammering home what he sees as his key argument against the existence of God. In his book, "The Greatest Show on Earth", Dawkins aims to put the theory of evolution in a factually unassailable position. Here, at Adelaide Writers' Week in 2010, he goes through his book chapter by chapter, and in doing so attempts to convince his audience of the absolute veracity of Darwin's theories.

Richard Dawkins is the author of several books on science and on atheism, including "The God Delusion", "The Selfish Gene" and "The Extended Phenotype". He is the founder of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. In 2008, he was part of a group of humanists and secularists responsible for the controversial London bus-borne advertisements that advised people "There's Probably No God. Now Stop Worrying and Enjoy your Life".

Professor Gavin Brown is a mathematician and the Inaugural Director of The Royal Institution of Australia. Prior to this he served for twelve years as the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sydney.

Keeping The VLT's Eyes Clear: Recoating a Giant Mirror

Every night, all year round, the ESO Very Large Telescope, or VLT, opens its four giant eyes to scrutinise the beautiful southern skies. Each eye is a huge mirror, 8.2 metres in diameter, that gathers the light of the night sky, and reflects it into optical systems that form ultra-sharp images of the Universe. But keeping the VLT´s eyes clear requires each mirror to be cleaned and recoated occasionally, a delicate and complex procedure.

ESOcast 15: Keeping the VLT's Eyes Clear - Recoating a Giant Mirror.

The world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory

The skies over the ESO sites in Chile are so dark that on a clear moonless night it is possible to see your shadow cast by the light of the Milky Way alone.

The Very Large Telescope array (VLT) is the flagship facility for European ground-based astronomy at the beginning of the third Millennium. It is the worlds most advanced optical instrument, consisting of four Unit Telescopes with main mirrors of 8.2m diameter and four movable 1.8m diameter Auxiliary Telescopes.

The telescopes can work together, in groups of two or three, to form a giant interferometer, the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer, allowing astronomers to see details up to 25 times finer than with the individual telescopes.

The light beams are combined in the VLTI using a complex system of mirrors in underground tunnels where the light paths must be kept equal to distances less than 1/1000 mm over a hundred metres.

With this kind of precision the VLTI can reconstruct images with an angular resolution of milliarcseconds, equivalent to distinguishing the two headlights of a car at the distance of the Moon.

The 8.2m diameter Unit Telescopes can also be used individually. With one such telescope, images of celestial objects as faint as magnitude 30 can be obtained in a one-hour exposure. This corresponds to seeing objects that are four billion (four thousand million) times fainter than what can be seen with the unaided eye.

The meaning of life

This video is to atheists who like to think life is boring. Life isn't boring. It's an experience that you should not waste. How well you do in your life determines if you'll go to heaven or not. Think about it.

This video is made by Truthful Christian

To think that this beautiful nature came into being by a cosmological explosion is absurd.

There's more to it than just life on earth. There is a spiritual realm; an after life. It's called heaven.

Heaven is eternal, heaven is filled with infinite possibilities, heaven is where god exists.

Truthful Christian obviously don't bring any evidence for his/hers belief. - Christians are so boring.

Jihad Suicide Hotline - Episode 1

Europe is faling its Muslims

As the first speaker in favour of the motion Tariq Ramadan states his belief that Europe has failed its Muslims in various different ways. It has allowed a political discourse in which Muslims, like the Turks and Bosnians, are not viewed as European citizens and has neglected to recognise the historical contribution of Muslim philosophers and scientists in forging the continent's identity, or the economic contribution of Muslims since World War II.

2/6 - viewer comments

Arguing against the motion Douglas Murray states that Islam is associated with violence for good reasons; it wasn't Buddhists or Atheists who were responsible for the 9/11 or 7/7 attacks. He says that the Muslim population has grown extraordinarily fast - from barely anything in the mid 20th century to between 15 and 17 million at the start of the 21st - and has been relatively successful. But there had been a failure of leadership among Muslim leaders, many of who were paid generously by European governments. The current leader of the Muslim Council of Britain couldn't even condemm stoning.
