"A Costco in Simi Valley found itself in a flap this week after a local pastor posted a photo on Twitter showing Bibles at the big-box store labeled as fiction. Who Invented Jesus? (with Robert M. Price)

Recent headlines have again prompted rabid debate over the origins of the Jesus story, the latest asserting that Christ was an invention of Rome.

What is knowledge, and how do we get it? What is the place of our consciousness in the physical world? Do we have free will? How do we persist over time, as our bodily and psychological traits change? The second goal is to get you thinking philosophically yourself. Register at

Millions Show Love & Gratitude Without God. Thanksgiving Ad in Times Square

This Thanksgiving in Times Square, secular humanists are reminding everyone that love and gratitude can be fully experienced and expressed without belief in God. A major electronic billboard advertisement from the Center for Inquiry, an international secular advocacy organization, will run through the holidays in full view of the millions who pass through "the Crossroads of the World" through the season.

The video advertisement features a mother and her young daughter embracing among the autumn leaves, with text declaring, "Millions show love and gratitude without God." The 15-second ad ends with the good wishes of everyone at CFI: "Happy Thanksgiving to all who make the world a better place!"

The ad is part of the Living without Religion campaign (, which seeks to introduce those who question religion to a vibrant and welcoming community of secular humanists, and to undo the stereotype of nonbelievers as angry or lost.

"Since the nonreligious don't believe in God, some wonder how we know who to give thanks to." said Ronald Lindsay, President and CEO of CFI. "Our answer is to just look around you at the people in your life."

Said Lindsay, "We all have much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving, and millions of Americans, instead of praying to a god, will be expressing gratitude and love to those who do so much to make life worth living: their family, their friends, and those who help others in need. A supposed supreme being isn't necessary."

The ad can be seen on West 42nd street between 7th and 8th Ave., on the north side above the Cold Stone Creamery and beneath the CBS logo. It is co-sponsored by local freethought organization Reasonable New York.

God does NOT exist | Michael Shermer

Michael Shermer gives his argument against the existence of God, any god.

Dr Michael Shermer begins by saying that 84% of the world's population believe in some kind of organised religion and how do those who believe in a particular religion know that they have chosen the right one and everyone else has got it wrong?

Michael Shermer proceeds to explain two pieces of evidence that proves that humans made up God and religion and not the other way around. Michael Shermer starts with evolutionary theory saying that we are all descendants from cautious creatures who creator false positive rather than false negatives.

The creation of an agency (an omnipotent being) within a religion is a powerful force of social control. Then the second line of evidence is the what ever social environment were born into we would be exposed to the dominant religion in that environment i.e. India -- Hinduism, Europe -- Christianity.

Curtis Penfold, Ex-BYU Student and Ex Mormon

Curtis Penfold: Ex-BYU Student, LGBTQ Ally, Feminist, Activist, Ex Mormon

Why did you want to go to BYU if you're not a believer?

I started out at BYU as a believer. I loved the Mormon Church and didn't plan on leaving it.

Can't you just get an ecclesiastical endorsement from another religion if you're not longer Mormon?

No, you can't. Leaving the LDS Church is against the Honor Code. You are immediately suspended if you do so.

I've heard of Mormon turned atheists that were allowed to continue attending BYU. What makes you different?

I know some Mormon turned atheists here at BYU who've been able to be open about their non-belief without any problems from their church leaders. I know others who've had lots of problems with their church leaders. I fall in the latter category.

Remember, a church leader can take away a students' endorsement FOR ANY REASON.

Curtis Penfold, Ex-BYU Student - Extended Cut (11min)

What about all the faithful Latter-day Saints who want to attend BYU? Shouldn't they kick you out to make room for them?

I was one of those faithful Latter-day Saints. And then my beliefs changed. Maybe other faithful Latter-day Saints wanted to attend BYU, but the fact is, I WANTED to stay at BYU, too. I enjoyed my program and I enjoyed my work.

Non-Mormons can attend BYU. Why can't ex-Mormons?

How can BYU benefit if they let BYU students who leave the LDS Church keep attending?

Well for one thing, they'd have less enemies from those who feel they have to hide at BYU, or who feel that they've been kicked against the curb by BYU.

For another thing, it could help the Mormon community by having Mormons create bridges in their youth with the ex-Mormon community, while at BYU. Mormons can become more open-minded, self-aware, and accepting of others if they could come in contact with those who believe differently than them while they're young.

So BYU kicked you out of your housing?

My apartment was owned by an independent company that has a contract with BYU. They house non-BYU students, but if anybody breaks the honor code, they're supposed to kick them out, or else they can't house BYU students anymore, and they'd lose a lot of money. I got kicked out for leaving the LDS Church. Even after being evicted, they still expect me to pay my rent until somebody else buys my contract.

You mention that part of the portfolio talks about occult activity. How can you be into the Occult if you're an atheist?

My relationship with the Occult (and with anything religious in general) is similar to my relationship with art, poetry, and theatre. I might get something out of performing Hamlet on stage or painting something. It might help me view my life from a new perspective or help me discover new things about myself. But I don't believe anything magical is going on.

Just like I don't believe anything magical is going on when I read Tarot, participate in a ritual, or pray in traditional form to Santa Muerte. I might not think anything supernatural is going on, but that doesn't mean I don't get anything out of it.

Some feel that me being interested in the Occult is a good reason to kick me out of my school, my housing, and my work. I happen to disagree. I also hope that a person will never get kicked out of their school, housing, and work for being a fan of Lovecraft either. Or for being atheist. Or for being pagan. Or baptist. Or Satanist. Because freedom is a beautiful thing.

I'm An Atheist, But I'm Not "Out"

Surveys from Pew and other organizations show non-belief as the fastest growing "religious group" (for lack of a better term) in the United States.

Some are simply unconcerned about religion. But many are self-professed atheists.

However, many of these atheists have only professed their non-belief to a select few, and some haven't told anyone at all.

This show deals with atheists who aren't "out." What are the reasons for remaining silent? What are the consequences of going public? And how is the culture shifting to perhaps make it easier for the non-theist to step out of the shadows.

Bad News For Atheism?

Are Americans becoming less religious? While church affiliation is probably declining, don't expect the atheist revolution anytime soon:

Over one half (63 percent, to be exact) of young Americans 18-29 years old now believe in the notion that invisible, non-corporeal entities called "demons" can take partial or total control of human beings, revealed an October 2012 Public Policy Polling survey that also showed this belief isn't declining among the American population generally; it's growing...

Mom Lets Son Wear KKK Costume

Halloween is over, but the controversy surrounding one child's costume remains.

Neighbors were outraged to see the 7-year-old dressed up as a member of the Ku Klux Klan, but his family says the costume is seen as a family tradition.

The child said he wanted to wear the costume because "it looked cool," after seeing it in the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes."

His mother, Jessica Black, says there is nothing wrong with the costume, or the KKK, which still has a strong presence in their hometown of Craigsville, Virginia.

"I did tell him that, you know, if you do it, you know there's going to be people talking about you, there's going to be people saying bad things about you when you do wear it," said Jessica.

A neighbor, Wendy Sprouse, said, "I just think it's really sad like that a kid is being taught that, that young. Because they don't know any better. You don't hear that much about it nowadays."

"It's suppose to be white with white, black with black, man with woman and all of that. That's what the KKK stands for. The KKK every year, raises money to donate to the St. Jude's," said Jessica.

Sprouse added, "It's not okay, you're offending a lot of people by one little action."

Controversial costume. A kid named Jackson dressed up for Halloween as a Christian from Ku Klux Klan.

About the Christian groupKu Klux Klan:

William J. Simmons, a former Methodist preacher, organized a new Klan in Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1915 as a patriotic, Protestant fraternal society. This new Klan directed its activity against not just blacks, but immigrants, Jews, and Roman Catholics. The Ku Klux Klan grew rapidly from there and had more than two million members throughout the country by the mid-1920s. D.W. Griffith's film THE BIRTH OF A NATION, which glorified the Klan and denigrated blacks, was used as a recruiting tool.

Although the Klan still reverted to burning crosses, torturing and murdering those whom they opposed, the organization became a powerful political force in the 1920s. Many state public officials throughout the nation were members. Eventually the organization was weakened by disagreements among the leadership and because of public criticism of Klan violence. By 1944 the Ku Klux Klan had lost most of its influence and membership. It was revived during the Civil Rights era and continues today as a small organization that continues to stage demonstrations in favor of white supremacy and fundamentalist Christian theology.

Leonard Mlodinow: Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior

Point of Inquiry, the flagship podcast of the Center for Inquiry, relaunches with a special episode recorded before a live audience at the 2013 CFI Summit in Tacoma, Washington, with new co-host Josh Zepps of HuffPost Live.

Our unconscious minds offer us something of a paradox. On the one hand, we'd be lost without it, as it processes information without us ever being aware of it — it's how we deal with the real world in real time. But on the other hand, we don't always have a complete picture, so the unconscious mind can often draw mistaken conclusions, even though they may feel right at a "gut level."

This is the subject of the work of Leonard Mlodinow in his most recent book Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior, for which he won the 2013 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award for a book of literary nonfiction on the subject of the physical or biological sciences. In this interview, Mlodinow explains how we have trouble poking holes in our own suppositions.

Leonard Mlondinow is a physicist, author, and screenwriter best known for coauthoring (with Stephen Hawking) the New York Times number-one best seller The Grand Design and the international best seller A Briefer History of Time, as well as The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives, a New York Times notable book of the year.

Next week we'll bring you another episode from the CFI Summit, as our second new co-host, journalist Lindsey Beyerstein, interviews Katherine Stewart, author of The Good News Club: The Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children.

People should not be afraid of their governments

- Can I ask about what you said on the telly?
- Yes.
- Did you mean it?
- Every word.
- You really think blowing up Parliament's going to make this country a better place?
- There's no certainty, only opportunity.
- You can be pretty certain that if anyone does show up Creedy'll black-bag every one of them.

- People should not be afraid of their governments.
- Governments should be afraid of their people.
- And you'll make that happen by blowing up a building?
- The building is a symbol, as is the act of destroying it.
- Symbols are given power by people.
- Alone, a symbol is meaningless, but with enough people...blowing up a building can change the world.

Atheists Insulted On Fox News Religion Panel

"It's Thursday on Fox's The Real Story, so you know what that means: Time to bust out the jokey "an atheist, a Jew, and a Christian walk into a bar Fox" lede graf. This time, Gretchen Carlson's religion panel went head-to-head-to-head over an organization's billboard declaring there to be no afterlife.

The billboard in question, sponsored by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, reads: "Enjoy Life Now. There Is No Afterlife." American Atheists president David Silverman unequivocally praised the message as "the truth" and one that encourages people to pass a "good legacy" onto their children. "Take care of your fellow man because God is not going to do it," he added. In return, Catholic League president Bill Donohue took the opportunity to stab at David Silverman's brainpower...".*

Rational People - Irrational Fears

We are skeptics. We are proponents of science. But we are also human, susceptible to the odd phobia and irrational fear.

Perhaps it's a shadow in the corner of the bedroom. Spiders, snakes or other slithery creatures. Certain sounds, people or places.

In this Halloween-themed show, we explore some of the interesting irrational fears and phobias that plague us.
