PETA Wants To Hang Lion Hunter

Yesterday news broke of an American dentist from Minnesota who paid to hunt a beloved lion in Zimbabwe known as Cecil the lion. Well of course there are some foul reports of play in that situation where it might have not happened as legally as it was supposed to. But, nonetheless, PETA is not happy about this

Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss. Are statements like these the reasons why people have issues with PETA? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

PETA has released a shocking statement in the wake of Cecil the Lion's death, saying the dentist who hunted and killed the animal should be killed.

“Hunting is a coward’s pastime,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement to Time. “If, as has been reported, this dentist and his guides lured Cecil out of the park with food so as to shoot him on private property, because shooting him in the park would have been illegal, he needs to be extradited, charged, and, preferably, hanged.”

On July 1, Cecil was lured out of a protected area by a hunting guide and shot with a bow and arrow by Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer, who reportedly paid $50,000 for the privilege.

America’s Gun Sickness, Graphed

Our brief reprieve from high-profile mass killings has already been broken. Even though nothing will likely happen legislatively after this latest tragedy to help prevent it happening again, it’s still important to talk about the issue and keep fighting for saner national gun policies.

The Young Turks, July 2015

John Iadarola (Think Tank), Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show), Jayar Jackson, and Michael Shure (Al Jazeera America) break it down on tonight’s Power Panel.

"In developed countries, there is a strong correlation between the number of guns and incidences of gun violence. In 2012, the US, which has the most guns per capita, also had the most firearm-related homicides of developed countries. Japan, which has the lowest rate of gun ownership, had the least…

Looking at the entire world, countries in Central America like Honduras, El Salvador, or Mexico have the most gun homicides per capita. But among the developed countries, none gets even close to the US.”*

Meet The FOUR People Funding The Ted Cruz Campaign

Ted Cruz was recently bragging about how much money he raised on the campaign trail. It's true, he's raised the second most among the Republicans. He's already raised $38 million. Unfortunately, four people account for $36 million of that.

Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down.

"Two low-profile Texas brothers have donated $15 million to support Sen. Ted Cruz, a record-setting contribution that amounts to the largest known donation so far in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Farris and Dan Wilks, billionaires who made their fortunes in the West Texas fracking boom, have given $15 million of the $38 million that the pro-Cruz super PAC, Keep the Promise, will disclose in election filings next week, according to sources outside the super PAC with knowledge of the giving."*

DONALD TRUMP Sues For Rape Allegations

Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s made his way to the top of the Republican polls, but now he may be having a minor setback. The Daily Beast is reporting the business mogul allegedly sexually assaulted his former wife Ivana Trump back in 1989. The allegation stems from the 1993 biography “Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump,” which details the violent deposition from the couples divorce case. Trumps lawyers quickly fired back arguing that you cannot rape your spouse. And now the Hollywood reporters saying they are threatening the Daily Beast with a 500 million dollars lawsuit for printing the story. We will keep you posted on the developing story!

State Sues Activist For Terrorism For Posting THE LAW

"The state of Georgia claims an open records activist broke copyright law — and maybe even committed a terrorist act — by posting the full, annotated versions of the state’s legal code online.

State officials claim in a lawsuit filed last week that Carl Malamud had engaged in an 18-year “crusade to control the accessibility of U.S. government documents” by scanning and reposting the annotated version of the Georgia legal code, which courts often rely on to make decisions on the law, on his website Public.Resource.org.

The state also “points directly to the annotated version as the official laws of the state,” reported Techdirt.” *

That's Not Funny is an examination of the history of taboo subjects and controversy in comedy, and one comedy fan's heartfelt and passionate defense of an art form.

That's Not Funny (2014) - full feature documentary

Director/Narrator Mike Celestino and producer Robert Garren (co-creators of the award-winning documentary short The Last Days of Cinerama) present an exhaustively-researched cultural analysis utilizing a vast array of archival footage and media spanning more than a century of Western humor.

OPENING NIGHT SELECTION - Freethought Film Festival 2014

SOME CONTEXT: This movie, as it stands, was written in the winter of 2013/2014, edited in the Spring of 2014, and had its premiere in Hollywood in mid-June 2014. Florida Gun Shop Now “Muslim Free Zone"

There’s a store down in Florida called “Florida Gun Supply.” It’s owner is Andrew Hallinan, who decided to put out a video online proclaiming his establishment a “Muslim-free zone.” The parallels in the arguments between this neo-Confederate and the new-atheist movement are striking.

Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

“Andrew Hallinan, who declared his Florida Gun Supply shop a “Muslim-free zone” after a Kuwait-born gunman killed four Marines and a sailor in Chattanoooga, Tenn., last week.

“I’m declaring Florida Gun Supply as a Muslim-free zone,” Andrew Hallinan said in a video posted to Facebook. “I will not arm and train those who wish to do harm to my fellow patriots…”

Andrew Hallinan admitted he cannot realistically ask the religious background of every customer that comes through his store, but he does intend to use the power vested in him by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to weed out certain customers, because, as he told the host, “Islam is evil at its core.” He added: “The Koran is built to establish a one-world order, a caliphate.””

Terrorists Threaten to Blow Up Satanic Statue

The Satanic temple was planning on erecting a new Satan statue in Oklahoma. Oklahoma declined. Big Jesus fans threaten to blow the statue up, an act that would have brought the FBI hammer down if they were muslims. - Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian (The Point) host The Young Turks.

"The Satanic Temple received a number of threats after announcing they’d unveil the Baphomet statue on commercial property, including threats to “burn it down” or “blow it up real good.” They’ve moved to a secret location at a ticket-only event. After the unveiling, the group is currently planning on moving the Baphomet to the statehouse in Arkansas, where officials are planning to set a Ten Commandments monument.

After vowing to move their Satanic sculpture to Oklahoma’s statehouse to counter a Ten Commandments monument there, the state Supreme Court ruled public property couldn’t be used for religious displays.

The group has been an effective foil to conservative Christian claims to theocratic dominance, using language in the Religious Freedom Restoration Act intended to favor Christians to challenge abortion waiting periods, according to the New York Times.”*

Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story - Documentary

We all love food. As a society, we devour countless cooking shows, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash?

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences.

Featuring interviews with TED lecturer, author and activist Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates, perfect produce and portion sizes, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers, retailers, inspiring organizations, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment.

Ehrman Cambridge Lecture on Forged

Bart Ehrman visits Google Cambridge located in Cambridge, MA on April 7, 2011 to discuss his new book at that time called Forged. From the cover of the book, the outline reads: "It is often said, even by critical scholars who should know better, that "writing in the name of another" was widely accepted in antiquity. But New York Times bestselling author Bart D. Ehrman dares to call it what it was: literary forgery, a practice that was as scandalous then as it is today. In Forged, Ehrman's fresh and original research takes readers back to the ancient world, where forgeries were used as weapons by unknown authors to fend off attacks to their faith and establish their church. So, if many of the books in the Bible were not in fact written by Jesus's inner circle—but by writers living decades later, with differing agendas in rival communities—what does that do to the authority of Scripture?"

Program discussed on Bart Ehrman's Foundation Blog: http://ehrmanblog.org/?p=8958

Bart D. Ehrman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He came to UNC in 1988, after four years of teaching at Rutgers University. At UNC he has served as both the Director of Graduate Studies and the Chair of the Department of Religious Studies. A graduate of Wheaton College (Illinois), Professor Ehrman received both his Masters of Divinity and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where his 1985 doctoral dissertation was awarded magna cum laude.

Naked Woman Handcuffed In Her Own House

In Chandler Arizona there is another case of police abuse, this time involving a naked woman handcuffed in her own home.

Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian (The Point), Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick ?!), and Maz Jobrani hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

Read more here: WATCH: Arizona cops illegally barge into home of showering woman and handcuff her while she’s naked

“Woman is suing after an Arizona police officer barged into her home in March, handcuffed her and lectured her while she was naked.

Elmerelda Rossi was showering when two Chandler police officers arrived at her home to investigate a domestic disturbance call because Rossi had an argument with her estranged husband, ABC 15 reports.

Rossi told ABC 15 she was in the shower when her daughter told her the officers were at the door. She grabbed a towel and slung it around herself before answering. She told the officers to wait at the door so she could get a cell phone to record the encounter, and closed it behind her.

“I start to walk into my living room, I probably get maybe five steps in, and all of the sudden I just hear boots running in after me, telling me, ‘stop or I’ll arrest you,'” she told the station.”

Hector Avalos: How Archaeology Killed Biblical History

Hector Avalos is professor of religious studies at Iowa State University and the author or editor of six books on Biblical studies and religion, including his recently published work, The End of Biblical Studies. Join us for a fascinating presentation detailing how the more we discover about the ancient world, the less reliable we find the Bible.

Part 1 of 2

From the dust jacket of The End of Biblical Studies: Hector Avalos calls for an end to biblical studies as we know them. He outlines two main arguments for this surprising conclusion.

First, academic biblical scholarship has clearly succeeded in showing that the ancient civilization that produced the Bible held beliefs about the origin, nature, and purpose of the world and humanity that are fundamentally opposed to the views of modern society. The Bible is thus largely irrelevant to the needs and concerns of contemporary human beings.

Hector Avalos: How Archaeology Killed Biblical History - Part 1 of 2

Second, Avalos criticizes his colleagues for applying a variety of flawed and specious techniques aimed at maintaining the illusion that the Bible is still relevant in today's world. In effect, he accuses his profession of being more concerned about its self-preservation than about giving an honest account of its own findings to the general public and faith communities.

Catholics Are Super Sad Gay People Can Get Married Now

Catholicvote.org wanted to make their position clear on gay marriage. They released a video where young people were discussing how they view marriage has being between a man and a woman. Are they acting as victims of persecution? John Iadarola and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

"In a video released the day before the landmark marriage equality decision by SCOTUS, CatholicVote.org has marriage equality opponents say something they're been "afraid" to speak out about. They confess that they are against marriage equality. The emotional video features several marriage equality opponents explaining why they don't want gay people to get married. Several of them even tear up towards the end of the video and talk about their "gay friends." It's hard to believe this video is even serious."

The Most Famous Convert

This is touted as a compelling reason Christianity is believable, but I find it sorely lacking. People convert, even antagonistic people. It happens all the time. Some people even call them traitors. Such conversions prove nothing. It's even a Hollywood trope, yet notice how none of the plots of those movies felt the need to invoke the supernatural to explain the protagonist's change.

It is interesting to note that Jesus didn't condemn homosexuality, but for some reason, Paul of Tarsus decided to make a point of it.

But then, to honor “one of the worst Fridays of his life,” Stewart presented a cartoon of a stout little Scalia having a really bad day (including his own personal raincloud and jars of applesauce).

Tracie and Matt discuss why the Bible is not the Word of God, but put together and edited by men.

This is an abbreviated segment from The Atheist Experience #483 of January 14, 2007 (topic: "Old Testament Gods"), with Matt Dillahunty and co-host Tracie Harris.

What is The Atheist Experience?

The Atheist Experience is a weekly cable access television show in Austin, Texas, geared at an atheist and non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin (ACA), a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

Donald Trump On "Traditional Marriage"

"Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump didn't have much of an answer on Sunday when pressed about how he squares his own marriage history with his opposition to same-sex marriage.

CNN "State of the Union" host Jake Tapper asked the business mogul to respond to criticisms over the twice-divorced Trump touting "traditional marriage."

"What do you say to a lesbian who's married, or a gay man who is married, who says, 'Donald Trump, what's traditional about being married three times?'" Tapper asked in a taped interview, which the host said was conducted ahead of the Supreme Court’s ruling Friday against bans on same-sex marriage.

Donald Trump didn't argue with the question, saying the hypothetical lesbian or gay man would 'have a very good point.'” *

Five Black Churches Have Burned To The Ground In One Week

"At least five predominantly black churches have caught fire in the last week, including at least three that have been the subject of arson, the Southern Poverty Law Center reports.

The string of blazes, which have occurred in four Southern states and Ohio, comes a week after nine people were gunned down at a Charleston, South Carolina, church. Dylann Roof, 21, has been charged with nine counts of homicide and possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime.

An arsonist set fire to the College Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Monday. The following day, God’s Power Church of Christ in Macon, Georgia, was gutted by flames. And on Wednesday, Briar Creek Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, was deliberately set ablaze, causing more than $250,000 in damage.” *

Did You Know It's Still Legal To Keep Gay People Out Of Businesses?

A Tennessee store owner put a sign infant of his shop that read “No Gays Allowed.” This is still legal in the state for him to refuse service to those in the LGBT community. John Iadarola and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

"After the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states, a hardware store in Grainger County, Tennessee, put up a sign with a terrible message: "No gays allowed." And while this might seem abhorrent to most people, it turns out that it's totally legal.

Jeff Amyx, a baptist minister who owns Amyx Hardware & Roofing Supplies, told WBIR 10 News that he put up the sign because he's religiously opposed to gay and lesbian couples, and that he has no intent of taking the sign down.

The storeowner's actions invoke memories of similar signs that were used in the South prior to the Civil Rights Movement to enforce segregation, which is now illegal under federal law. But unlike discrimination against black people and other racial minorities, this type of discrimination against gay and lesbian people is totally legal — not just in Tennessee, but most other states in the US."

Betty Bowers Explains Traditional Marriage to Everyone Else

America's Best Christian takes time to explain to less informed Christians the curious details of the Lord's concept of marriage.

What's the Definition of "Traditional Marriage"?

Traditional marriage isn't the "one man, one woman" story you've always heard. It's changed countless times over the last 4,000 years, almost always for the better. Let's take a look at all the different things that marriage has been, and the one thing that has remained constant about marriage over all those millennia.

Candidates Fight Gay Marriage With Hate, Fear & Sky God Nonsense

"Republican presidential hopefuls responded to the Supreme Court’s historic same-sex marriage decision Friday with a mix of tepid disapproval and fiery condemnation, reflecting the party’s deep unease with an issue where public opinion tilted decisively toward equality well before the law had caught up.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a longtime same-sex marriage opponent whose advisers include many prominent pro-gay rights Republicans, exemplified the more cautious end of the GOP spectrum.

“Guided by my faith, I believe in traditional marriage,” Bush wrote. “I believe the Supreme Court should have allowed the states to make this decision. I also believe that we should love our neighbor and respect others, including those making lifetime commitments.”

Bush wasn’t the only Republican 2016 hopeful who toned down the fire and brimstone."

Making And Selling Weapons Against Christianity Says The Pope

"Pope Francis continued his week of politically charged comments on Sunday, saying arms manufacturers who call themselves Christians are hypocrites.

At a rally of thousands in the Italian city of Turin, the Pope said that those who claim to follow the teachings of Christ but also manufacture weapons “leads to a bit of distrust.”

His criticism was not limited to the manufacturers, however; Francis also called out investors, saying “duplicity is the currency of today…they say one thing and do another.”

Francis’ comments come on the tail of the leak, and subsequent release of, his 192-page climate change encyclical on Thursday, in which he said that man-made climate change disproportionately affects the world’s poor."

Jim Carrey Rails Against California's Strict Vaccination Law

Jim Carrey went on a twitter rant over California’s state-wide vaccination policy. The actor believes that vaccines poison children, but claims he is not anti-vaccine. John Iadarola and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

"Jim Carrey launched into an anti-vaccination rant on Twitter Tuesday after California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill requiring all public school children in the state to be vaccinated starting in 2016. In a series of tweets, the actor accused the Centers for Disease Control of being "corrupt" and painted Brown as a "corporate fascist that must be stopped."

"California Gov says yes to poisoning more children with mercury and aluminum in manditory [sic] vaccines," Carrey tweeted. "They say mercury in fish is dangerous but forcing all of our children to be injected with mercury in Thimerosol is no risk. Make sense?"

The strict bill also removes vaccination exemptions based on religious beliefs, The Hollywood Reporter writes. "I am not anti-vaccine. I am anti-Thimerosal, anti-mercury. They have taken some of the mercury-laden Thimerosal out of vaccines. NOT ALL," Carrey tweeted. "The CDC can't solve a problem they helped start. It's too risky to admit they have been wrong about mercury/Thimerasol. They are corrupt." Carrey ended his rant by telling parents to check out the documentary Trace Amounts."

Who Invented Jesus? (with Dr. Robert M. Price)

Recent headlines have again prompted rabid debate over the origins of the Jesus story, the latest asserting that Christ was an invention of Rome.

Anti-Gay Orthodox Jews Hire Mexicans To Protest For Them At Gay Pride

"A group of Orthodox Jews hired Mexican day laborers to dress in traditional Jewish garb and protest against the New York City gay pride parade Sunday.

A New York Times reporter noticed a group of men wearing the fringed Jewish prayer garments and holding up antigay signs in a barricade by the parade. Although the men were holding signs reading “Judaism prohibits homosexuality” with the logo of the Jewish Political Action Committee, the men were plainly Hispanic.

“They were Mexican laborers, protesting because they were paid to protest,” the Times reported, based on an admission from one of the protesters.”
