I've heard this belief confessed by priests before, Protestants as well as Catholics. It is an incredibly arrogant and deeply offensive idea which will sadly only be abandoned when they come to realize that there is no "transcendent".
It could be argued that to say that some people are not fully human is to reject the notion that "god created all men as equal"; obviously the believers are "more equal" because they don't end up in eternal torture! Such nonsense is pitiable.
