The Evolution of the Origin of Species
Darwin's Struggle: The Evolution of the Origin of Species.
Documentary telling the little-known story of how Darwin came to write his great masterpiece, On the Origin of Species, a book which explains the wonderful variety of the natural world as emerging out of death and the struggle of life.
In the twenty years he took to develop a brilliant idea into a revolutionary book, Darwin went through a personal struggle every bit as turbulent as that of the natural world he observed. Fortunately, he left us an extraordinary record of his brilliant insights, observations of nature, and touching expressions of love and affection for those around him. He also wrote frank accounts of family tragedies, physical illnesses and moments of self-doubt, as he laboured towards publication of the book that would change the way we see the world.
The story is told with the benefit of Darwin's secret notes and correspondence, enhanced by natural history filming, powerful imagery from the time and contributions from leading contemporary biographers and scientists.

Explore: Sex and Religion in Manila
Manila is one of the fastest growing cities on Earth and evidence of population pressure is everywhere.
In a devoutly Catholic country, Seyi Rhodes reports on moves to introduce a reproductive health bill to provide free contraception. The Church fears a breakdown in Filipino family values and is resisting the move, blaming the widespread poverty on bad government and corruption rather than population growth. But there is evidence that many young Filipinos, while retaining their Catholicism, are now moving against the teachings of the Church on Contraception.

Lou Engle Calls for a 40-Day Fast Preaching "Sexual Purity"
I love Lou Engle, just by looking at the way he moves his body backwards and forward it shows he is sick in his mind.
"I would like to call the pastors, leaders, and believers in the state of California to join me on this Lenten fast from February 25th to April 5th. In my fast 7 years ago I had to overcome the compromise of my eyes to get a spiritual breakthrough in the state. I believe that if the pastors of California would call their people to 40-days of cleansing, confession, and preach sexual purity, as the core of this fast, we could step into a place of corporate spiritual authority that could once again shake leaders in government, in our judges, release spiritual awakening, and the beginnings of reformation. I believe if we could form a remnant in California (the 7000 that have not bowed there knee to Baal) then we could see a breakthrough even on the issue of marriage.
Everyday pray for the following Justices: Chief Justice, Ronald George, and Associate Justices Carlos R. Moreno, Joyce L. Kennard, Kathryn Mickle Wedegar, Ming W. Chin, Marvin R. Baxter, and Carol A. Corrigan.
And everyday pray for Governor Schwarzenegger.
Consumed by TheCall,

VAN SUSTEREN: I don't want to pry to personally, but I mean, actually, contraception is an issue here. Is that something that you were just lazy about or not interested, or do you have a philosophical or religious opposition to it or...
BRISTOL PALIN: No. I don't want to get into detail about that. But I think abstinence is, like -- like, the -- I don't know how to put it -- like, the main -- everyone should be abstinent or whatever, but it's not realistic at all.
VAN SUSTEREN: Why?
BRISTOL PALIN: Because -- I don't want to get into details on this.
VAN SUSTEREN: Well, no, I don't mean personally, just big picture, not -- not necessarily about you, but...
BRISTOL PALIN: Because it's more and more accepted now.

Around the World in 80 Faiths: The Indian Subcontinent
After examining 49 faiths, Pete Owen Jones journeys from the Nepalese Himalayas to the south of India to make sense of the mystery of Indian religions, including the transmigration of the soul, karma, the pantheon of gods and the high regard for gurus.
Pete Owen Jones visits a Tibetan Buddhist monastery high in the mountains. In Calcutta, he takes part in the colourful Durga Puja festival and meets the Agori who live amongst the dead. He then travels to the deserts of Rajastan, where he finds Hindu sects ready to walk on fire or even pay the ultimate price for their gurus. In Mumbai, Pete attends a Zoroastrian marriage and explores why one of the world's oldest religions is in danger of disappearing.
Pete Owen Jones discovers how Sikhism had a violent birth when he attends the 300th anniversary of its greatest guru's death, and then journeys south to learn about the remarkable faith of Jainism, which renounces violence against every living creature. Finally Pete spends Diwali in a tiny village at a dung-slinging festival - with inevitable results.

Rep. Monique Davis - Atheist-Hater
"What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous . . . it's dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists! This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God. Get out of that seat . . . You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon."
-- Illinois State Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago) to Rob Sherman, who was testifying before a committee of the Illinois House. Davis was referring to Sherman's atheism.

Around the World in 80 Faiths (Episode 5 - USA)
Around the World in 80 Faiths. Part 5/8 - America
Pete Owen Jones's adventures continue as he embarks on the American leg of his religious odyssey to find out why, when it comes to ritual, anything goes.
Pete discovers a dangerous side to the Bible Belt when he gets too close to the serpent handlers in the Appalachian mountains, before taking his seat at a table-tipping séance. He continues to challenge his own faith when he comes face to face with a miracle-working evangelist and a boy preacher, before witnessing gay rites in California.
In Utah, he visits the holy city of Mormonism and ventures into the wilderness to seek out religious outlaws who take many wives. Pete goes native in a traditional Navajo sweat lodge and visits a sect where mummification is alive and well.
His journey across the most religiously diverse country in the world reaches an explosive climax in Nevada when he joins 50 thousand revellers to witness the ceremonial burning of a man.
Aired: BBC2 21:00 Friday 30th Jan 2009

Chomsky on Humanism 2
Somewhere in this interview, Chomsky says there is currently not enough evidence to conclude whether we have free will or not. I recently asked him about the famous experiments conducted by Benjamin Libet in the 1980s, which have convinced many people that free will is a myth. Here is his answer:
I know of the experiments, but I don't think they bear on freedom of will. Rather, they bear on the interesting (but in this context marginal) question of the point within mental processing where decisions are reached. There is a widely believed dogma, articulated explicitly by prominent philosophers, that mental processes must be accessible to consciousness. The idea has never been given a coherent formulation, and there is no reason I know to take it seriously, other than the weight of tradition.
We can't answer the question now. Whether we ever will be able to is, of course, unknown. And there are also questions about what counts as an answer. We have long ago abandoned the hope of answering the questions about motion that were the primary concern of the modern scientific revolution, for example.

Atheism vs Christianity (Zindler vs Craig)
A debate between William Lane Craig (Christian) and Frank Zindler (atheist).
Willow Creek Community Church and the American Atheists, Inc. agreed to stage a major debate on the theme "Atheism vs. Christianity: Where Does The Evidence Point?" This video presents the entire debate as it actually unfolded.
If you watch this "debate" you will find William Lane Craig to be an ignoramus of terrible dimension. Sadly. William Lane Craig does not seem to know the most bacis things about thinking and science.
