Bill Maher was stunned with the Mormon Church’s recent revelation that its founder Joseph Smith married no less than 40 women, some as young as 14 years old. “This religion is based on a sex cult!” he jibed. “It is plainly based on a 19th century sex cult. And if we didn’t have Mormonism, we’d have to invent it for all the religious people who need something to look down on because they believe in something crazy, this would be it.”
His guests on HBO argued that perhaps the Mormon Church was trying to acknowledge their somewhat messed-up history on polygamy (which is well-recorded) and move past it, with Andrew Sullivan comparing it to the Catholic Church (somewhat) accepting evolution. “It’s the dumb [religions] that actually can’t get ahead of it, and start arguing absurd things, like that the earth is 6000 years old,” he noted, adding that the Mormons were just being smart. “When there’s real historical evidence about Joseph Smith, you can’t keep saying that it isn’t happening. People are going to find out.”
At the very least, Maher concluded, the Mormons were doing one smart thing: they stopped sending missionaries to Syria and Iraq. “They’re like, ‘You people believe whatever the fuck you want.’”
