How would Saturn's rings look from the gas giant's surface? To answer this Cosmic Query, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson describes what it would be like to float on the surface of his favorite planet in the solar system and gaze up at the rings of Saturn. Throw in the Cassini spacecraft, Madame Saturn (Dr. Carolyn Porco), comic co-host Chuck Nice and a great anecdote about Galileo and you've got a titanic Behind the Scenes video. Panorama White Fright
Panorama visits Blackburn in Lancashire to investigate how increased separation and segregation between Muslim Asians and whites is dividing communities. - Blackburn presents a stark example of a difficult, international problem.
Panorama White Fright Pt. 1
For all the hopeful talk about "integration", "multiculturalism" and now "cohesion", the reality on the ground appears to be that Britain's Muslim Asian community and its white community have few points of contact, and that the white majority often feel they share little in common with the growing Muslim Asian minority.
Panorama White Fright Pt. 2
Of course there are hopeful exceptions, but Blackburn - where Muslim Asians on the last census made up 24% of the population and whose local council takes the issue very seriously - demonstrates clearly what the problem is.

Frans de Waal: Morality Without Religion
A long tradition of thinking tells us that due to man's animal nature we need to have order imposed from above, in the form of religion. Without religion, we could not live together, and that is why all human societies believe in the supernatural and have developed one religion or another.
This view, which the biologist and primatologist Frans de Waal calls Veneer Theory, is an essentially pessimistic view "that morality is a thin veneer over a nasty human nature."
In his new book, The Bonobo and the Atheist: In Search of Humanism Among the Primates (http://goo.gl/OCus5), de Waal challenges this theory, arguing that human morality is older than religion, and indeed an innate quality. In other words, religion did not give us morality. Religion built onto a pre-existing moral system that governed how our species behaved.
de Waal's argument, which he has been making for years, is strengthened by the fact that recent research is starting to paint a better picture of the kind of cognitive processing that empathy requires. It turns out that empathy is not as complex as we had imagined, and that is why other animals are capable of it as well as humans.
So if being moral is so easy, can we dispatch with religion altogether?
That is an experiment that no one has tried, and which de Waal finds intriguing. The problem, as de Waal points out in the video, is that we need someone to be keeping watch in large-scale societies in which "we cannot all keep an eye on each other."
Transcript--
Well, religion is an interesting topic because religion is universal. All human societies believe in the supernatural. All human societies have a religion one way or another. Which for the biologists must mean that religion has some advantages -- offers some advantages to a society. Otherwise we wouldn't have that strong tendency to develop it. And so for me that's actually a far more interesting question of whether God exists or doesn't exist. That sort of question I cannot answer. But the question of why we have religions is an interesting question. And my view is that morality, our human morality, is older than religion so instead of saying morality comes from God or religion gave us morality. For me that's a big no-no.
Our current religions are just 2,000 or 3,000 years old which is very young. And our species is much older and I cannot imagine that, for example, a hundred thousand years or two hundred thousand years our ancestors did not have some type of morality. Of course they had rules about how you should behave, what is fair, what is unfair, caring for others -- all of these tendencies were in place already so they had a moral system and then at some point we developed these present day religions which I think we're sort of tacked on to the morality that we had. And maybe they served to codify them or to enforce them or to steer morality in a particular direction that we prefer.
So religion comes in for me secondarily. I'm struggling with whether we need religion. So personally I think we can be moral without religion because we probably had morality long before the current religions came along. So I think we can be moral without religion but in large scale societies where we are not all keeping an eye on each other because we -- in societies with a thousand people or several thousand or millions of people we cannot all keep an eye on each other. And that's maybe why we installed religions in these large scale societies where a God kept watch over everybody.
And then the question becomes is this really needed? Now in northern Europe -- I'm from the Netherlands -- there is basically an experiment going on. In northern Europe the majority of people are not religious anymore. When you ask them they say they're nonbelievers. And they still have a moral society as far as I can tell. And so there is a sort of experiment going on there -- can we set up a society where religion is not dominant at least? It may be present but it's not dominant anymore, there is still a moral society. And until now I think that experiment is going pretty well. And so I am optimistic that religion is not strictly needed. But I cannot be a hundred percent sure because we've never really tried -- there is no human society where religion is totally absent so we really have never tried this experiment.

2013 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Existence of Nothing
The concept of nothing is as old as zero itself. How do we grapple with the concept of nothing? From the best laboratory vacuums on Earth to the vacuum of space to what lies beyond, the idea of nothing continues to intrigue professionals and the public alike.
Join moderator and Hayden Planetarium Director Neil deGrasse Tyson as he leads a spirited discussion with a group of physicists, philosophers and journalists about the existence of nothing. The event, which was streamed live to the web, took place at the American Museum of Natural History on March 20, 2013.
PANELISTS:
J. Richard Gott, professor of astrophysical sciences, Princeton University, and author of Sizing Up the Universe: The Cosmos in Perspective
Jim Holt, science journalist and author of Why Does the World Exist? An Existential Detective Story
Lawrence Krauss, professor of physics, Arizona State University and author of A Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something Rather Than Nothing
Charles Seife, professor of journalism, New York University, and author of Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea
Eve Silverstein, professor of physics, Stanford University, and co-editor of Strings, Branes and Gravity

Powerful OT8 - of Scientology - John Allender tried everything he could think of to try to prevent Mark Bunker from shooting video of Scientology's tiny dictator David "Slappy" Miscavige at the opening of Portland's Ideal Org ... including lying to the police. Blue Laws
They are known by a variety of names — blue laws, Sunday blue laws, Sunday-closing laws, Sunday statutes. They affect a variety of activities on Sundays, ranging from liquor sales to hunting to car-buying. Many blue laws are county and city ordinances, though some are statewide statutes.
In this episode, prepare the facepalms as we examine "blue laws" and other laws and edicts that were once implemented for religious and "moral" reasons and remain on the books today.

Want Scientifically Literate Children? Get Out of Their Way
We spend the first year teaching children to walk and talk and the rest of their lives telling them to shut up and sit down.
Transcript
I'm often asked by parents what advice can I give them to help get kids interested in science? And I have only one bit of advice. Get out of their way. Kids are born curious. Period. I don't care about your economic background. I don't care what town you're born in, what city, what country. If you're a child, you are curious about your environment. You're overturning rocks. You're plucking leaves off of trees and petals off of flowers, looking inside, and you're doing things that create disorder in the lives of the adults around you.
And so then so what do adults do? They say, "Don't pluck the petals off the flowers. I just spent money on that. Don't play with the egg. It might break. Don't...." Everything is a don't. We spend the first year teaching them to walk and talk and the rest of their lives telling them to shut up and sit down.
So you get out of their way. And you know what you do? You put things in their midst that help them explore. Help 'em explore. Why don't you get a pair of binoculars, just leave it there one day? Watch 'em pick it up. And watch 'em look around. They'll do all kinds of things with it.
For me at age 11, I had a pair of binoculars and looked up to the moon, and the moon wasn't just bigger, it was better. There were mountains and valleys and craters and shadows. And it came alive. Not the full moon because there are no shadows cast when the moon is full; got to wait for it to be half moon or crescent moon, and look at the edge between light and dark with a simple pair of binoculars.
I was transformed by picking up a pair of binoculars and looking up, and that's hard to do for a city kid because when you look up you just see buildings -- and really your first thought is to look in people's windows. So to look out of the space -- out of living space -- and look up to the sky, binoculars go far, literally and figuratively. That's what got me started on the universe. It might get some kids you know started the same way.

Still the Good Guys?
What if our modern day superheroes solved problems like the God of the bible? Would they still be considered good? Why don't we need to be told that Superman, Batman, The Avengers, etc, are good, but we do need to be told that God is good? Because actions speak for themselves.
If you were never told that the God of the bible is good - if those verses were omitted - would you come to that conclusion on your own? The destroyer of cities and worlds who fail to worship Him...Good?! OR is it more likely that this God is a product of a culture seeking to justify its methods and actions against other cultures?

Linguistics as a Window to Understanding the Brain
How did humans acquire language? In this lecture, best-selling author Steven Pinker introduces you to linguistics, the evolution of spoken language, and the debate over the existence of an innate universal grammar. He also explores why language is such a fundamental part of social relationships, human biology, and human evolution. Finally, Pinker touches on the wide variety of applications for linguistics, from improving how we teach reading and writing to how we interpret law, politics, and literature.

The God Delusion Debate - John Lennox vs Richard Dawkins
In Birmingham, Alabama, Professor Richard Dawkins and his Oxford University colleague Professor John Lennox engaged in a lively debate over what is arguably the most critical question of our time: the existence of God. The debate centered on Dawkins' views as expressed in his best-seller, The God Delusion, and their validity over and against the Christian faith. Both presenters agreed to the format and topics of discussion.

The evidence for climate change WITHOUT computer models or the IPCC
Please spend your time and effort in addressing the evidence presented in the video:
"This is a straw man argument. Of course skeptics [sic] accept that CO2 warms the atmosphere,
We just don't think the warming will be catastrophic."
Answer: "Skeptics" have all kinds of positions on climate science, depending on their personal beliefs and feelings. This video addresses those critics who claim there is no evidence for the link between CO2 and global temperature. Whether you want to call such changes "catastrophic" or benign, or terrible, or bad, or good is your feeling, and therefore outside the scope of the science.
"Correlation does not mean causation."
Answer: It is still coinsistent with the theory. And where a mechanism has been shown that should produce a correlation, then the correlation is yet more confirmation that a theory is correct.
"Here's a piece of evidence -- there's no hot spot"
Apart from the fact that this 'no hot spot' idea is another piece of Internet mythology, the idea of the 'hot spot' is based on a computer model. If you think computer models are all wrong, then the lack of a hot spot must be wrong.
And critics -- please try to address the evidence shown in this video, rather than repeat myths that have been dealt with in my previous videos. If you're not sure, check them out:

Jared Diamond: The World Until Yesterday
In this special episode of Point of Inquiry, Chris and Indre speak with the Pulitzer Prize winning Jared Diamond, author of Guns, Germs, and Steel.
Diamond is Professor of Geography at the University of California, Los Angeles and has traveled extensively to New Guinea for his research. His observations there form the foundation of his new book, The World Until Yesterday: What We Can Learn from Traditional Societies, which is the subject of this interview.
Afterwards, Chris and Indre debate aspects of Diamond's new book that they found both surprising and, on occasion, frustrating.

Revolution OS
Revolution OS (open-source and linux)
Linux distribution:
Debian
Red Hat

Interesting debate re belief hosted by Melvyn Bragg with Gore Vidal, The Reverend Keith Ward and Susan Greenfield (LWT one late Sunday evening c1999). Hidden Scientology Compound
An aerial photograph showing the base's enormous Scientology symbols on the ground caused media interest and broke the story in November 2005. According to a Washington Post report, the Church's first reaction was to attempt to suppress the information:
1/3
The church tried to persuade station KRQE not to air its report last week about the aerial signposts marking a Scientology compound that includes a huge vault "built into a mountainside," the station said on its Web site. ... Based in Los Angeles, the corporation dispatched an official named Jane McNairn and an attorney to visit the TV station in an effort to squelch the story, KRQE news director Michelle Donaldson said.
2/3
The church offered a tour of the underground facility if KRQE would kill the piece, the station said in its newscast. Scientology also called KRQE's owner, Emmis Communications, and "sought the help of a powerful New Mexican lawmaker" to lobby against airing the piece, the station reported on its Web site.

What Christians Really Believe
American Christians on YouTube have attempted to redefine Atheism in order to control the discussion. Using the same methods, but using factual information, I demonstrate what that ends up looking like when applied to Christianity in America.
Christianity defined for you!
Several christians on YouTube have been gracious enough to define atheism for me. While I always thought that atheism simply meant that I didn't believe in gods, these generous christians took the time to explain the deeper meaning of what I did not believe.
Now, I'd like to return the favor and define christianity for them. I will use the same methodology as my christian friends; namely, I will use the most publicized viewpoints of christians. I will be selective in my choices. But, I will go one step further...I will show actual examples of christians practicing their faith.
So, let's get started....
This is the leader of all christians. He is the Pope. He is gods representative on earth. He tells christians what to believe. And he is never wrong. How do we know? Cause he says so, that's how.
And thats a good thing because there are so many different bibles, its hard to know which one to read. Turns out, you don't have to read any of them. The church has a lot of people who's job it is to read the holy books for you.
To be a Christian, you first have to accept Jesus as your personal savior. Now, Jesus was not like any other jewish person. There was something...i don't know...blonder about him. Many christian historians agree that he probably looked like James Franco.
So, now that you know Jesus, you get to live your life the way he wanted you to...
*************************************************************************
1. This is what you get for transportation. You also have to learn carpentry. And you can't fight for your country if its under attack. But, oatmeal really is good for you, after all.
2. You have to dance around in circles like this. You can make a very fine bed, but you can't have sex in it. Sex is not allowed.
3. You get a clean set of magical underwear. These are bullet proof. And you get your own planet when you die.
4. Brown people can't go to heaven. Sorry, brown people. Brigham Young said so. He was a christian prophet and they are never wrong.
5. Or there might be a seperate, but equal, heaven for them. Nazi's and death row inmates can go to regular heaven.
*****************************************************************************
6. Snake handling is good. I'm not sure why. But its the right thing to do. Of course, if a poisonous snake bites you, remember....
7. No blood transfusions. Not a drop. You can't give blood, either. same deal. No matter what a judge says, faith healing is better than so-called sciency devil medicine. Besides, God is the real judge.
8. All the good things about America are based on jesus. Including the government. Jesus wrote the constitution. Being pregnant or counting money is bad, I think. Maybe using cell phones, too. At least when Jesus is talking.
9. If you get confused about the rules, there are a lot of famous christians who will gladly tell you what to think. Like how gay people cause natural disasters.
10. God hates the koran. and space shuttles and America and gay people. And soldiers. And children . And you.
I hope this was clear for all you christians. I tried to include all of you and put you into one neat little package the way you did for me.
No need to thank me. It was my pleasure.
****************************************************************************
Now, while everything I have shown you is factual, the composite picture of these facts is not an accurate depiction of how most Christians view themselves. But this is what it looks like when you demonize people for not sharing your beliefs in your god.
Maybe its time for you to look at all people another way.

Choosing To Die (Terry Pratchett, documentary)
In this documentary Terry Pratchett discusses his Alzheimer's and how it is slowly eroding away his life and his talent. He meets others with medical conditions which will inevitably lead to a prolonged, painful and above all undignified death and asks the question "is it better to end things early?" There are few answers here. Pratchett is on a genuine mission of inquiry, he's not preaching a position, nor does he end up with an opinion. Instead he takes a frank look at a subject most shy away from, and his only real conclusion is that we'd perhaps do well to think it through more than we do now.
Be warned, towards the end of the documentary he accompanies a man to a Swiss clinic where he chooses to end his own life. This is not depicted in any kind of voyeuristic way, but both Pratchett and the camera do sit right there in the room with him and watches him die in cold, unflinching detail.

How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change
"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

The Decline of the Scientology Empire
Jim Lippard spoke on the history of the Church of Scientology, how Scientology has collided with the Internet and lost control of its secrets and its membership, and is now seeing an accelerating decline as its top members leave for new alternatives.
Book mentioned in talk The Scandal of Scientology
Jim Lippard founded the Phoenix Skeptics in 1985, and co-founded the Phoenix Area Skeptics Society in 2011. Jim Lippards written articles and book chapters on skeptical topics, including two articles in Skeptic magazine on Scientology, "Scientology vs. the Internet" in 1995 (co-authored with Jeff Jacobsen) and "The Decline (and Probable Fall) of the Scientology Empire" in 2012. Jim Lippard also contributed to Gordon Stein's Encyclopedia of the Paranormal and Joe Nickell's Psychic Sleuths.
.
Video notes starting at 13:50: The Fraser Mansion, though referred to by Scientology as the "founding church" from the 1970s to 2010, wasn't the original building. The original building, at 1812 19th St. NW, is now a museum called the L. Ron Hubbard House (though his house was across the street), which the church acquired in 2004. The Fraser Mansion is now Scientology's National Affairs Office.
The first use of the name "Church of Scientology" was by the Church of Scientology founded in Camden, N.J. in Dec. 1953; the first Church of Scientology corporation was in Los Angeles (Feb. 1954, which became the Church of Scientology of California in 1956), the Church of Scientology of Arizona was incorporated that same year. L. Run Hubbard's organization while he lived in Phoenix was the Hubbard Association of Scientologists, International (HASI), founded in Sepember 1952. All HASI assets were folded into the Church of Scientology of California in 1966.
