Sodom And Gomorrah - The Real Sin City
In the Book of Genesis, God punishes the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone as punishment for their sins. Is the story just a cautionary tale, or did these cities really exist? To find out, Josh Bernstein travels to the southeastern edge of the Dead Sea to examine the archaeological record. In Jordan, he studies the charred ruins of Bab-Edh-Dhra and Numeira - thought by many to be the real Sodom and Gomorrah; he harvests pure sulfur and turns it into brimstone (then tests the material to see how powerful it is); in Israel, he scales a cliff to measure one of the greatest earthquakes to ever hit the region; finally, standing atop Mt. Sodom, he stands beneath a pillar of rock salt named "Lot's Wife," after the spouse who dared to gaze back on the handiwork of God.

If God Became an SJW
Can Jeffery talk God out of being an SJW, or will SJWs themselves make God realize what a carcinogenic ideology they espouse? Perhaps actions will speak louder than words. I understand that I'll probably get a lot of shit for this video, and to those of you who disagree, please try to refrain from a typical unthinking Pavlovian response to my use of the dreaded SJW "buzzword" (or "bellword" as it were). Social justice has been bastardized into the new creationism. In its name, people have been supporting unsubstantiated belief and suspicion over evidence. Concepts that were once clear and valid, like safe spaces, triggers, privilege, racism, and sexism, have had their meanings altered to the point of deception through the repeated abuse and misuse of the terminology until it succumbs to utter triviality at best, downright divisiveness at worst, and ultimately exemplifies the ironic justification of blatant bigotry through collectivist ideals that strive to supplant perceived supremacy with intentional supremacy and authoritarianism. "...but, but, but, DarkMatter, why would you be against equality?!" Yeah right. Beware of those who co-opt virtuous language to suit their nefarious deeds. Such hypocrisy is abhorrent to me, so I reserve the right to speak about it. If you care about equality, as I do, then you'll reject its misuse as a term.
I would also caution against falling into similar tactics through the overuse/misuse of terms like "SJW" and "regressive" which are terms that can certainly be valid, but shouldn't be applied to people who do not manufacture controversy and are sincerely trying to fight actual injustices, like real racism and real sexism, with no thought of using such battles solely to elevate their status. Overusing and misapplying those terms is little different than calling everyone racist and sexist at the drop of a hat.

I'll Believe in God When This Happens
If I were God, you wouldn't need to ask me (pray) to heal your child's cancer. I'd just fucking do it. If you believe that God "intervenes", that He performs miracles, or that He has a grand plan, then you are utterly thoughtless. Look around you. The complete randomness of the world suggests that there is absolutely no scheme going on behind the scenes. If there is, however, then God is one scary motherfucker, deserving only fear - not praise.

Why does anyone believe the Bible?
AronRa: I only had a half hour to speak and they started me off late, so I ran way over. That was awkward. In retrospect, I think I was giving two different 20 minute talks that day. Plus it is obvious that I ride a motorcycle over thirty miles a day in the Texas sun, because I have an obvious tan line from my bandana. Must do something about that next time.

Hey Bill Nye: Can Science Eradicate Religion and Myth from Politics?
Religious practices run deep in many cultures and their influence will be slow to fade away. But this shouldn't deter a scientific outlook from helping us make practical decisions in life.

Aditya Bakshi: Hey Bill. This is Aditya Bakshi. I'm a mechanical engineer graduate from India. My question to you is why are so many people attracted to pseudoscience and what can we as a society do to stop pseudoscience if it has the support of religious fundamentalists and hyper nationalist? For example, the recently concluded Indian Science Congress was criticized heavily for featuring a lot of pseudoscience and mythology. Thank you.
Bill Nye: Greetings Aditya. I'm saying it as best I can. Aditya? I'm saying it as best I can. I have spent just about two weeks in India and I got to say I was very impressed with how much pseudoscience there is, how much spiritualism there is. I guess those aren't the same thing. And a lot of people - it's very common for people from my country, from the United States to go to India to get a new way of looking at life, to get a new spiritual prospective. And as you suggested these things, pseudoscience and the spiritual perspective seem to be tied together. But science, this process that humans have come up with where you make an observation; you come up with a hypothesis, a reason you think this observation happen, this phenomenon occurred, and then you come up with a way to test it. An experiment. You test it. You see what happened. You compare that to what you thought would happen and you know nature and this extraordinary way that enables us to have cars and trucks and the green revolution and feed everybody and clean water for a lot of people and electricity and spaceflight and putting things in orbit around Mars, the Mars Orbiting Mission, ISRO, Indian Space Research Organization's mission. Very cool. This is a great concern. All I can say is, well not all I can say, but something I will say about pseudoscience. Well, in the United States it's very common to use the phrase critical thinking, being critical of claims is that it's a process.

The Evolution of Jesus in the Bible
Liar, Lunatic or Lord ... or something else?
Corrections:
---------------
(1)
User HConstantine pointed out to me that the water into wine miracle was the first miracle in John, not Mark. Not sure why I did that. I guess because it's my favorite miracle (number one in my mind!).
(2) User roohif correctly pointed out that I put Acts in the wrong place on the time line. Acts is believed to be written by the same author of Luke. Luke is a gospel and Acts deals with the events regarding the apostles after Jesus's death. It only makes sense that Acts follows Luke. It's probable that Acts was written between 90-100, some sources say later, and of course conservative estimates have it decades earlier.
(3) What Paul says or doesn't say about the Resurrection
I think this should go under "Clarifications," but I want to be clear that I'm not claiming that Paul doesn't address the resurrection. He clearly does. My point with his letters is that we don't get enough detail about Jesus. Think of it this way ... what if we never had the gospels (nor any substitute (gnostic, etc)? What would Christians claim to know about Jesus? Not very much.
(4) Paul may not have written II Thessalonians. There is a split among scholars as to whether this book was written by Paul, a follower, a huckster posing as Paul, etc. This doesn't really change anything with the video, but I wanted to point it out anyway.

Atheist Debates - The Exodus
The story of the Exodus isn't merely missing supporting evidence, it's wholly unbelievable. The presentation of the characters and their actions isn't consistent with a group of people who witnessed miraculous events - and the actions of the God of this story represent an individual as confused, irrational and unbelievable as the people writing the story.

Regarding the image. I am getting an infinite amount of comments here and private messages saying that my formatting of the numbers is off. This is, for some reason, really bothering people.
Two things:
(1) I got the image from a free clip art website and didn't catch the formatting until people started screaming in the comments.
(2) YouTube user odwin8 said this:
"A lot of people are commenting on the Roman numerals so I thought I'd point out that "IV" and "IX" are fairly recent, and historically "IIII" and "VIIII" were more common.
Interestingly, 9 became "IX" long before 4 changed, apparently because "IV" was shorthand for Jupiter (IVPPITER)."

Jesus and the Historian
Bart D. Ehrman presented "Jesus and the Historian" at the Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium, 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Biblical scholars have long recognized the discrepancies between the four New Testament Gospels and the difficulties that result in determining who Jesus really was. Can these four Gospels be relied upon to give us an accurate account of Jesus’s words and deeds? Bart brings to bear his analysis and lengthy scholarship to answer this question.
This event was sponsored as a joint venture of St. John’s Episcopal Church, on the Square, Carlisle and the Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Jesus: the cover-up
No broadcast, no festivities, no coverage whatsoever...
Instead, it happens in the dead of night when nobody's around...?
Why? Isn't this meant to be the turning point of the history of creation?
Sounds like someone's covering something up, or trying to get away with something. But why? What? And guess who screwed it up?
It suddenly occurred to me a few months back: the 40+ years-later accounts we have of the morning of Jesus's resurrection sound exactly like the way things would have played out if Jesus had wanted NOBODY to know about it. Curious. Why would THAT be? But then when you think about the insane theology behind it - it's actually no wonder. I think I know what happened. Here's my theory.

Abraham and Isaac
The three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Islam and Christianity) share a foundation that rests, in part, on the story of Abraham and Isaac (or, Ishmael, in the case of Islam). This story has strangely been preached as a lovely story of obedience and the foundation of a covenant with God...but what does the story really tell us?

The Struggle & the Promise, OR Religion's Incompatibility with Science
A lot of scientists these days are too frightened of not getting their grants funded by congressional theocrats to tell you why religion and science are completely incompatible. Eric Stone, Ph.D., a retired neuroscientist, is no longer one of them. He will discuss the many ways these two worldviews are incompatible or downright contradictory including their logic or lack and the fact that one is about facts and testable hypotheses while the other about only far fetched notions of wish fulfillment. He will also cover how religion rejects essential features of the scientific method and how it is fooling a lot of good scientists today with its so-called “anthropic principle” and a supposedly God-“tuned” universe.
Eric did his undergraduate work at New York University and his graduate work in the Dept. of Psychology at Yale University with Neal Miller where he received his degree in Physiological Psychology (now known as Neuroscience). He conducted basic neuropsycho-pharmacological research on brain stress systems involved in depressive illness for over 40 years at NYU School of Medicine in the Depts of Psychiatry and Pharmacology and has published extensively in peer reviewed journals.
He came out as an atheist about 15 years ago and has been active in the movement ever since. He helped form Westchester Atheists in New York and took over the reins of the Rossmoor group with his co-leader and wife, Elaine, when they moved to California in 2013.

Ehrman-Licona Debate Prove Jesus Rose from Dead
Bart Ehrman flew to Kansas City, Missouri where he debated Christian apologist Mike R. Licona on the topic, "Can Historians Prove that Jesus Rose from the Dead." Is there historical evidence that Jesus rose from the dead? The event took place on February 28, 2008 at 7 p.m. held at the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. R. Philip Roberts, the seminary's president and the debate's moderator commented previous of the event, "We are thrilled to have both Bart D. Ehrman and Mike R. Licona on campus addressing the questions many people ask these days. Apologetics, the science of defending the Christian faith, are very important. Our culture is looking for an answer. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Christian community and others to learn if the claims of Christ are defensible."
The debate is discussed in the book "Come Let Us Reason: New Essays in Christian Apologetics" edited by Paul Copan, William Lane Craig. Chapter 9 is written by Michael Licona, which reviews this debate extensively from his perspective.
Program discussed on Bart Ehrman's Foundation Blog: http://ehrmanblog.org/?p=9029
