Think You’re A Christian? Better Check With Mike Huckabee First...

“Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee this week asserted that President Barack Obama had no right to “pretend” he’s a Christian after the White House invited LGBT and climate change activists to the White House to hear Pope Francis speak.

“I’m also concerned about a guy who believes he’s a Christian and then pretends to be and says he is but then does things that makes it very difficult for people to practice their Christian faith,” Huckabee told Newsmax on Tuesday. “If a person says, ‘I’m a Christian’ but you invite the pope into your home and then you invite a whole bunch of people who are at odds with the Catholic church policy, I think there’s something very unseemly about that.””*

Alternative Medicine Advocates Overdose On Psychotropic Drug

"A group of 29 homeopaths at a conference in Handeloh outside Hamburg, Germany had to be hospitalized after a mass overdose of the designer drug 2C-E. It isn’t clear how the group ended up ingesting the banned substance rather than a homeopathic remedy.

The psychotropic substance, which has been illegal in Germany since last year, is reputed to combine the euphoria of ecstasy, or MDMA, with the hallucinatory experiences of LSD. The effect is highly dose-dependent, however, and the 29 practitioners of alternative medicine participating in the conference, aged 24 to 56, were found “staggering around, rolling in a meadow, talking gibberish and suffering severe cramps” outside the conference hall, broadcaster NDR reported.

More than 150 emergency staff quickly arrived on the scene to administer sedatives and take blood tests. None of the victims reportedly suffered lasting physical damage"*

Kim Davis: I’m Not A Hypocrite, God Forgave Me

Kim Davis has granted an interview with ABC News, and during the interview she was very open about the terrible things she’s gone through because she’s a Christian. The interviewer points out that many call her a hypocrite because of her four marriages and adulterous relationships. She says she’s not a hypocrite because she’s forgiven and “washed clean.” Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

Do you think Kim Davis is a hypocrite? Does asking forgiveness from God excuse her actions?

“Kentucky clerk Kim Davis spoke out in an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America, and said she was not a homophobe because some of her best friends were gay.

“I have friends who are gay and lesbians. They know where I stand,” Davis said. “And we don’t agree on this issue and we’re okay because we respect each other.”

“So you would deny your friends who are in gay relationships, you would deny them a marriage license as well?” asked ABC’s Paula Faris.”

Ben Carson Thinks Satan Invented Big Bang Theory

Ben Carson has largely been successful at creating an image of a very likable, reasonable person, not necessarily driven by any sort of extreme philosophy. A 2012 speech shows that’s all smoke and mirrors. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola (Think Tank), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"In a speech delivered in 2012, Ben Carson said the big bang theory was part of the “fairy tales” pushed by “high-faluting scientists” as a story of creation.

Similarly, Carson, a noted creationist, said he believed the theory of evolution was encouraged by the devil.”*

Does Chick-fil-A Ban Violate Religious Freedom?

“Chick-fil-A is having some issues getting approval for a new location in Denver, and it's all because of the restaurant chain's anti-gay past.

City council members have halted the approval of a Chick-fil-A location at Denver International Airport as they debate whether or not the franchise should get a seven-year deal, according to the Denver Post. Chick-fil-A was "the second-most sought-after quick service brand at the airport, second to Chipotle," according to a 2013 survey of airport goers.

But council members voiced concerns over president Dan Cathy's views on gay marriage. When asked in 2012 whether he believed in the “Biblical definition of a family unit,” president Dan Cathy replied "guilty as charged."

Ehrman-Butt Debate Suffering & God's Existence

Bart Ehrman met with Kyle Butt at the campus of the University of North Alabama (UNA) on April 4, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the Norton Auditorium, which seats about 1,700 people. They were invited by the Christian Student Center on the campus. Gospel Broadcasting Network aired the event live on their television network, as well live streamed it on the Internet

Kyle wrote previous of the event explaining that, "He [Bart] is a self-avowed agnostic who claims that the pain and suffering he sees in the world make it impossible for him to believe that the Christian God exists. Thus, the debate will be on the subject of suffering and the existence of God. Ehrman will be affirming: “The pain and suffering in the world indicate that the Christian God does not exist.” I will be denying that proposition."

Billboard Reminds Kim Davis About Traditional Marriage

So even though Kim Davis refuses to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, those working under her have been issuing licenses. One couple the first lesbian couple in the area to get married was Carmen & Shannon Wampler-Collins. RIght now it's unclear as to whether or not they're marriage license is valid because Kim Davis has refused to sign off on them.

Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss. What other kinds of “traditional marriage” values do people ignore?

Read more here: Kim Davis Mocked by 'Marriage' Billboard in Her Hometown

The Kentucky clerk who was jailed after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples hasn't exactly gotten the warmest welcome in her hometown after her release.

A billboard defending gay marriage, towering high above a Rowan County road, is directed specifically at Kim Davis.

Planting Peace, the nonprofit humanitarian organization that paid for the billboard, said in a statement that the "intent of the billboard is to expose this narrow interpretation by Davis and others that they use to defend their discrimination against the LGBTQ community."

We Know What a Healthy Diet Is. Now Can We Stop Arguing About It?

Go ahead: Eat lean meat, eggs, and seafood, if that's what you want. Just remember, as Dr. David L. Katz notes in video interview, the bulk of your diet should be vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. Katz is the author of "Disease-Proof" (http://goo.gl/R3t9kL).

Transcript:

I routinely point out that we could eliminate 80 percent of all chronic disease by using what we know. And we don’t do that. We really bog down in bickering about do we know what we know and is this part of what we know more important than that part of what we know. And in no place is that a bigger problem than diet. There’s obviously a lot of money to be made from confusion. Some years ago I worked on air for Good Morning America and I saw firsthand that there really is a vested interest in TV and the media propagating constant change. If you say the same thing about diet on air enough times in a row people lose interest in your dietary segments. If you say something different every time it’s always interesting. Tune in tomorrow for a new answer. So the media are in on it. The fad diet authors are in on it. Basically a lot of people who just think that their view of the truth through a particular tunnel is the only truth or in on it. But the result is we squander the opportunity to use what we know because we bog down in debate about what we don’t know quite so well. So having completely lost my patience for the status quo I decided to do something about this. And it’s really challenging now because there was a time not all that long ago when a single voice could rise above the din. Think for example about Dr. Koop when he was Surgeon General. Or Benjamin Spock and the influence that he had on parents raising young children. But that era is gone because we live in the age of the blogosphere and cyberspace and everybody’s got a microphone. And there’s just this incredible amount of static.

Why do people laugh at creationists (part 43)

Mike Huckabee Wants Special Christian Rights

Mike Huckabee is a big believer in religious freedom, but how far does his commitment to that religious freedom for other religions actually go?

Ana Kasparian (The Point), and John Iadarola (Think Tank), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down.

"Huckabee began to discuss Chancellor Jeffrey Atherton, who last week dismissed a divorce complaint in an attempt to prove a dickish point about allowing gays to marry ...

Mika Brzezinski then interrupted Huckabee in an attempt to get him to answer the question. “Would you support a clerk who would not give Kim Davis a third or a fourth marriage license? You?”

Huckabee responded that he wasn’t sure he followed this very simple question. “You’re asking a question of a different nature,” he said. “There’s a difference between a marriage between a man and a woman or a marriage between two men and a marriage between two women...”

Gunmaker Selling Crusade-Friendly Bible AR-15 Rifles

Christian fundamentalists are selling guns with scriptures engraved on them. The Florida gunmaker thinks the scriptures have magical powers that don’t allow the weapons to be used by muslims. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"Florida gun shop is marketing a military-style rifle engraved with a Bible verse and a Knights Templar Long Cross — the symbol of the Christian crusades.

The “Crusader” AR-15 went on sale last week at Spike’s Tactical in Apopka, and a company spokesman said the rifle was intended to be a weapon no devout Muslim would touch, reported the Orlando Sentinel.

The weapon — which is inscribed with Psalm 144:1: “Blessed be the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle” — was immediately condemned by the Council on American-Islamic Relations.”

Donald Trump On His Religion

Donald Trump was recently discussing his faith, and when he couldn’t name his favorite Bible verse, GOP rival Ben Carson pounced. Trump aggressively defended his “big league” faith.

Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down.

"When conservatives start attacking each other's faith, then you know it's on. In today's GOP, candidates define themselves by their religion so they can court evangelical voters so Ben Carson's attack on Trump's faith is a big deal...

"Probably the biggest thing -- I've realized where my success has come from and I don't in anyway deny my faith in God," Carson said.

He explained what he meant by quoting what he said was one of his favorite bible verses.

"By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life and that's a very big part of who I am. I don't get that impression with him," Carson said of Trump. "Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't get that.”

Why Are You Still Catholic?

A study came out recently all about what Catholics believe compared to what all Americans believe.

I just want to mention two issues in particular.

First is marriage equality. 55% of all Americans said they support gay or lesbian couples getting married.

Now, this is something forbidden by the Church. The Catechism even says "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." The supposedly-great Pope Francis believes that.

And yet the study showed that 60% of Catholics support gay marriage. 60!

The second issue is abortion. 53% of all Americans said it should be legal in all or most cases.

The Catholic Church calls it a "grave offense." It's completely anti-abortion.

But guess what? 51% of Catholics said they support legal abortion in most or all situations.

What the hell?

And how many Catholics out there do you think believe that a consecrated communion wafer is literally a piece of Jesus's body? Or that the Pope knows best? Or that women should never be priests?

So here's my question for those of you out there who call yourselves Catholic but disagree with so many of the Church's positions: Why?!

But that's the Old Testament!

Muslim Flight Attendant Refuses To Serve Alcohol

Charee Stanley is a recent convert to Islam who is a flight attendant for the airline Express Jet. She objects to serving alcohol for religious reasons, which caused her to ultimately lose her job. Stanley is now taking her case to the courts.

Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down.

"A Muslim flight attendant for ExpressJet is fighting to be reinstated after she says the airline suspended her for refusing to serve alcohol.

In a complaint filed last week with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Charee Stanley said the carrier had revoked a reasonable arrangement made to accommodate her religious beliefs.

Stanley's lawyer, Lena Masri of the Council on American-Islamic Relations' Michigan chapter, told The Huffington Post Monday that Stanley approached her superiors in June about how she could avoid serving alcohol to passengers because she recently discovered that Islamic law forbids it.”*

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis is going to continue not signing gay marriage certificates, but starting today she will be not signing them in jail.

"Embattled Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has been ordered to jail by U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning, according to the Herald Leader’s John Cheeves:

Earlier on Thursday, Davis told Fox News contributor Todd Starnes that she was prepared for this outcome. “I’ve weighed the cost and I’m prepared to go to jail, I sure am,” she said. “This has never been a gay or lesbian issue for me. This is about upholding the word of God.””*

John Dehlin just completed his PhD in clinical and counseling psychology. But you may know him best as the founder of the Mormon Stories podcast, one that celebrates the faith and also critiques it when necessary.

Because of some of his views supporting same-sex marriage and the ordination of women within Mormonism, Dehlin was excommunicated from the Church earlier this year for apostasy. That story was covered in the New York Times.

We spoke with John about how discovering the truth about Mormon history pushed him away from the Church, why he still has a soft spot for the faith, and why Mormons have strategic reasons for standing firm against LGBT rights.

A Kentucky county clerk who opposes same-sex unions for religious reasons again refused to issue marriage licenses to any couples on Tuesday, opening herself to potential fines or jail time after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider her petition a day earlier.

In response, a federal judge ordered Kim Davis, the Rowan County clerk, to appear in court Thursday concerning a motion to hold her in contempt of his earlier order that she resume issuing licenses. The judge could impose a range of sanctions, including incarceration.

Ms. Davis also faces possible criminal charges if the state attorney general’s office grants a request to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate her.
