Handcuffed Man Murdered By Police Officer
It's clear in the video that this man was putting up a hell of a fight and the cops are struggling here but does that justify a fatal shooting? El Paso Police Department cited a list of reasons backing this incident. Which side of this situation do you fall on? Tell us in the comments below.
"Earlier this year a grand jury declined to charge an El Paso police officer in the shooting death of a prisoner. A video of the incidenct was published on Monday, after the Texas Attorney General instructed the city to fulfill a request processed by the El Paso Times. The events of the video are deeply unsettling, showing a police officer essentially executing a handcuffed man.
On March 8, 2013, Officer Jose Flores shot and killed Daniel Rodrigo Saenz, who was in police custody after erratic behavior at a supermarket led him to be taken to a nearby medical center, where he is alleged to have assaulted an off-duty police officer and the facility's staff. Upon being arrested, Saenz continued to lash out physically against officers, and, according to reports, struck his own head against a door with the apparent intent to injure himself."*

Andrew Copson discussing the assisted dying ruling, on BBC News
A majority of judges in the Supreme Court has dismissed the appeals of Jane Nicklinson, widow of Tony Nicklinson, and Paul Lamb. The appeals were seeking a ruling by the Court that current English law, which prevents assisted dying for the terminally ill or incurably suffering, is incompatible with the right to dignity and a private life.

Counter-Apologetics Part 1
Merriam Webster defines the word apologetics as:
1) systematic argumentative discourse in defense (as of a doctrine)
2) a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity
And apologists are everywhere, using lofty language and theological acrobatics to defend belief systems which can't otherwise be defended.
This two-part podcast talks about many prominent apologists and their arguments, addressing many of the most commonly heard apologetic claims and examining those claims logically, rationally, morally and against the evidence.
This episode is a discussion between several experience debaters: Matt Dillahunty, Tracie Harris and AronRa. Next week's show will be fully dedicated to listener calls with comments and questions (podcast@thethinkingatheist.com)

Adam Carolla vs Patent Trolls, the Government, NPR, Salon, and more!
There's a lot of people out there whose job it is to be offended for other people," says Adam Carolla, comedian and host of the Adam Carolla Show podcast. "They're like, 'Hey, these are opinions people disagree with!' It's like, 'Hey, United States there, buddy. It's just one big pile of opinions that people disagree with.'"
Reason TV sat down with Carolla in his Glendale warehouse/podcast studio to discuss a lawsuit he's facing from a so-called "patent troll" who claims intellectual ownership over the idea of "a system for disseminating media content representing episodes in a serialized sequence." In other words, the company claims to own the very idea of podcasting, despite never having produced a podcast itself.
Carolla, whose show set a Guinness Book World Record for most downloaded podcast of all time, is a natural target for the patent troll, but Carolla believes that if he goes down, the entire future of podcasting may be at stake. So he's started a "Save Our Podcasts" campaign to fight back.
"We were just sort of number one on their shakedown list, and I'm just assuming they'd just get to everyone who was in the top 1000 on iTunes eventually," says Carolla (1:46). "We sort of felt like, well, it'd be nice for our podcasting brothers not to give them 'X' amount of dollars... When terrorists take hostages, if you start negotiating with them, they just start taking more camera crews. We just figured we'd save the next camera crew. We'll take the duct tape and the zip ties."
Carolla even made a recent trip to Washington, D.C. to discuss patent reform with a Congessional committee. But he left underwhelmed by the experience.
"I got a call about an hour later that said, '[Sen. Patrick] Leahy shot it down,'" says Carolla (4:23). "It gave me renewed hope in the system and how one man could make a difference. Oh wait... it was a total waste of time."
In addition to fighting off patent trolls, Carolla has also been busy shooting an independent film, working on his Spike TV show To Catch a Contractor, and recently released his third bestselling book, President Me: The America That's in My Head. He sounded off on several of the topics covered in that book, such as his disgust with Los Angeles ("this town is trashy" - 7:08) and comedians being pressured to issue fake apologies (10:25).
He also calls out online media outlets for constantly engaging in ambush interview techniques, pointing to recent encounters with NPR and Salon as examples (11:45).
"There's not a lot of people who disagree with them who are willing to even talk to them anymore because of the ambush nature of what they do now," he says. "There's sort of nothing in it for the person who's being interviewed by Salon.com anymore, because all they're going to do is try to make you look like a bigoted, sexist, xenophobic whatever."
The interview concludes with Carolla discussing the various political labels that commentators have attached to him and why he considers himself "mostly libertarian" (14:43).
"You bring up the topic, I'll give you the answer" says Carolla. "For me, if you go, 'Would you like to lower taxes? Yes. Are you OK with guys having a pot plant in their backyard? Yes. Would you like government smaller? Yes.' I think when you're done with many of these questions, you'll probably end up with libertarian."
Approximately 17 minutes. Interview by Zach Weissmueller. Edited by Alexis Garcia. Camera by Alex Manning, Will Neff, Carlos Gutierrez, and Garcia.

Inside the Scientology Celebrity Centre: An Ex-Parishoner Reveals All
This documentary is an inside look at the Scientology Celebrity Centre. I begin by taking you on my journey from a fresh faced new actor who just arrived in Los Angeles, full of hopes and dreams, to ultimately being recruited into Hollywood's most dangerous, secretive, and famous cult. I'm bringing to light all of their horrible crimes, especially detailing how they exploit members financially. I talk about their elite Sea Organization, which makes members sign billion year contracts and devote their entire lives to serving Scientology as around the clock slave labor. I also publicly reveal how anti-gay the church is, bringing homophobia to a whole new level. I'm exposing the church and airing all of their dirty laundry!
I know all of their inner workings. I know all of the inside secrets about the church and their celebrities. This is the video Scientology doesn't want you to see and what they don't want you to know about - and I tell all!
About Me: My name is Steven Mango and I was a parishoner of the exclusive Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International in Hollywood, CA. In the span of four years of devoted membership until my escape in 2012, I became a lifetime member, I donated close to $50,000 to the church, and I was a victim of severe spiritual and emotional abuse inside the walls of the church. I was also a poster boy for the church, appearing in advertisements for the International Association of Scientologists across the Celebrity Centre. My photo also appeared on their The Way To Happiness booklets.

He didn't think it was a sin to be gay. He said that just a couple days after his own son came out publicly as gay so it was personal for him.
The reaction was kind of what you would expect. The church decided they would vote on whether Cortez could still be their pastor, whether he would still have a job.
But the amazing thing is that they voted to keep him. And they changed their own rules instead. They now allow members to hold LGBT-affirming beliefs. The church is now called a Third Way church, meaning they agree to disagree on "controversial" issues like gay marriage.
It couldn't have happened at a more important time either, because the Southern Baptist Convention just met this past weekend and a major SBC leader Al Mohler denounced Cortez and his church. He said there can't be a third way. There's the biblical way... or the way that'll send you to hell.
This is precisely the sort of thinking that causing so many young people to leave Southern Baptist churches. And it's not going to get any better while people like Mohler are in charge.
So yay!
By the way, I've heard a lot of criticism of Pastor Cortez saying that it shouldn't have taken him having a gay son for him to change his mind on this. He should just realize that all gay people are somebody's sons or daughters. That's a fair point. But you know what? That's how a lot of people with bigoted views change. They happen to know someone who's gay and, all of a sudden, it becomes an issue they have to deal with directly. It's not just something that happens over there. It's not abstract. They have to deal with their stereotypes being proven wrong right in front of their faces.
And by the way, it's not even a correct criticism in this case, because Cortez had changed his mind BEFORE his son came out to him.
But let's say that wasn't true. So what if it took a gay son for him to change his own mind. At least he had the courage to change it. And good for him for standing up for his son when he might have lost his job over it.

Afterlife is Meaningless Without Afterafterlife
If the afterlife gives life meaning, then what gives the afterlife meaning, and why can't that be the meaning of life? Why does meaning require eternity?

Waiting For Superman
SYNOPSIS (provided by Paramount Pictures)
For a nation that proudly declared it would leave no child behind, America continues to do so at alarming rates. Despite increased spending and politicians promises, our buckling public-education system, once the best in the world, routinely forsakes the education of millions of children.
Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that education statistics have names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily, whose stories make up the engrossing foundation of WAITING FOR SUPERMAN. As he follows a handful of promising kids through a system that inhibits, rather than encourages, academic growth, Guggenheim undertakes an exhaustive review of public education, surveying drop-out factories and academic sinkholes, methodically dissecting the system and its seemingly intractable problems.
However, embracing the belief that good teachers make good schools, and ultimately questioning the role of unions in maintaining the status quo, Guggenheim offers hope by exploring innovative approaches taken by education reformers and charter schools that have—in reshaping the culture—refused to leave their students behind.

The Dark Side of Fast Food: Why Does It Make You Sick / Fat / Tired / Taste So Good
Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal (2001) is a book by investigative journalist Eric Schlosser that examines the local and global influence of the United States fast food industry.
Fast Food Nation | Film Trailer
First serialized by Rolling Stone in 1999, the book has drawn comparisons to Upton Sinclair's classic muckraking novel The Jungle. The book was adapted into a film of the same name, directed by Richard Linklater.
The book is divided into two sections, "The American Way," which interrogates the beginnings of the Fast Food Nation within the context of post-World War II America; and "Meat and Potatoes," which examines the specific mechanizations of the fast-food industry, including the chemical flavoring of the food, the production of cattle and chickens, the working conditions of beef industry, the dangers of eating meat, and the global context of fast food as an American cultural export.
Fast Food Nation opens with discussion of Carl N. Karcher and the McDonalds brothers, examining their roles as pioneers of the fast-food industry in southern California. This discussion is followed by an examination of Ray Kroc and Walt Disney's complicated relationship as well as each man's rise to fame. This chapter also considers the intricate, profitable methods of advertising to children. Next, Schlosser visits Colorado Springs, CO and investigates the life and working conditions of the typical fast-food industry employee: fast-food restaurants employ the highest rate of low-wage workers, have among the highest turnover rates, and pay minimum wage to a higher proportion of its employees than any other American industry.
The second section of the text begins with a discussion of the chemical components that make the food taste so good. Schlosser follows this with a discussion of the life of a typical rancher, considering the difficulties presented to the agriculture world in a new economy. Schlosser is perhaps most provocative when he critiques the meatpacking industry, which he tags as the most dangerous job in America. Moreover, the meat produced by slaughterhouses has become exponentially more hazardous since the centralization of the industry: the way cattle are raised, slaughtered, and processed provides an ideal setting for E coli to spread. Additionally, working conditions continue to grow worse. In the final chapter, Schlosser considers how fast food has matured as an American cultural export following the Cold War: the collapse of Soviet Communism has allowed the mass spread of American goods and services, especially fast food. As a result, the rest of the world is catching up with America's rising obesity rates.
The book continues with an account of the evolution of fast food and how it has coincided with the advent of the automobile. Schlosser explains the transformation from countless independent restaurants to a few uniform franchises. "The extraordinary growth of the fast food industry has been driven by fundamental changes in American society... During that period, women entered the workforce in record numbers, often motivated less by a feminist perspective than by a need to pay the bills. In 1975, about one-third of American mothers with young children worked outside the home; today almost two-thirds of such mothers are employed. As the sociologists Cameron Lynne Macdonald and Carmen Sirianni have noted, the entry of so many women into the workforce has greatly increased demand for the types of services that housewives traditionally perform: cooking, cleaning, and child care. A generation ago, three-quarters of the money used to buy food in the United States was spent to prepare meals at home. Today about half of the money used to buy food is spent at restaurants - mainly at fast food restaurants."
Regarding the topic of child-targeted marketing, Schlosser explains how the McDonald's Corporation modeled its marketing tactics on The Walt Disney Company, which inspired the creation of advertising icons such as Ronald McDonald and his sidekicks. Marketing executives intended that this marketing shift would result not only in attracting children, but their parents and grandparents as well. More importantly, the tactic would instill brand loyalty that would persist through adulthood through nostalgic associations to McDonald's. Schlosser also discusses the tactic's ills: the exploitation of children's naïveté and trusting nature.
In marketing to children, Schlosser suggests, corporations have infiltrated schools through sponsorship and quid pro quo. He sees that reductions in corporate taxation have come at the expense of school funding, thereby presenting many corporations with the opportunity for sponsorship with those same schools. According to his sources, 80% of sponsored textbooks contain material that is biased in favor of the sponsors, and 30% of high schools offer fast foods in their cafeterias.

The Sketchy Story of Jesus
In this video, Venaloid explain the history of the Gospels and how they do not provide good evidence for the life, death, or resurrection of Jesus. Sources listed below.

Christianity is UnAmerican
Is the US a Christian nation?
Despite what the religious right would like you to believe, the US was founded on principles that are in direct opposition to core Christian doctrine. If someone claims that the US is a Christian nation, then they either don't understand what the founders of this country intended, or they don't understand Christianity.

Faith-Healer Fail!
Throughout history, pastors, preachers, healers and holy rollers have claimed to directly channel God in the performance of miracles. The sick and afflicted stand in long lines to be touched and cured by these (supposed) conduits of divine healing power.
But how effective are these healers? What types of miracles are claimed and received? What about those who received no actual healing benefit? Who profits from healing services and crusades? What are the tricks of the charlatans and fakes? And are they all fakes?
This podcast expores the side of "faith healing" that you won't hear about during Sunday morning prayer.

What the Fossils Say (with Dr. Donald Prothero)
Organizations like the Institute for Creation Research declare that fossils prove a young earth and in no way contradict the creation account of Genesis. In fact, religious "scientists" and apologists worldwide declare that secular science isn't just incorrect about dinosaurs, fossils and the age of the planet, but that it might be a puppet of Satan himself, working to mislead a generation into accepting what creationists call "The Religion of Evolution."
In this show, we welcome special guest Dr. Donald Prothero, professor of geology at Occidental College, expert in physical and historical geology, sedimentary geology and paleontology, and author of several books, including "Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why it Matters" and "Reality Check: How Science Deniers Threaten Our Future."
So...what do the fossils say? Let's talk to a legitimate scientist and find out.

Medieval Warm Period -- fact vs fiction
This video looks at the scientific research to answer three basic questions: 1) Was the Medieval Warm Period global? 2) Was it warmer than today? 3) And what does this all mean anyway? I examine the internet feud over the hockey stick and the various myths and misinterpretations about the Medieval Warm Period that seem to be rife on the Internet. My sources for the myths are blogs and videos; my sources for the facts are scientific papers.
CORRECTION AT 5:51: The graph without recent temperatures is not the work of a blogger after all, it comes from the researchers themselves. This does not change the fact that this graph was used by the Daily Mail to incorrectly infer that the MWP was warmer than today, while the graph the researchers used to show recent temperatures was not shown.

Our Plastic, Our Problem (A marine litter info-operetta!)
The Amazing Mr. Smashing sings an info-operetta about plastic in our oceans!
Our huge level of consumption and the accompanying waste it creates is leading to terrifying amounts of plastic entering our seas. All sorts of unpleasant effects are being discovered by researchers, including plastics acting as magnets for toxic chemicals, which are then being swallowed by sea life. We must act now to stop any more plastic reaching the oceans. There are many ways to do this, and every person can make simple changes in their lives to reduce their impact, but we also need the laws in place to ensure action by European governments.
2014 is the year that the European Commission reviews its various waste policies, including the waste framework directive. This means we have an opportunity to recognise the seriousness of marine litter and take strong steps to reduce waste and improve how it is managed. Let's show the law makers how much we care about our beautiful beaches and seas: like and share this video, using the hashtag #marinelitter and let's make a noise about the problem of plastics in our seas!

Neil deGrasse Tyson Is Worried That Humans Are Too Stupid For Aliens
A lot of people ask StarTalk Radio host Neil deGrasse Tyson if extraterrestrial life exists and why haven't we encountered any alien life yet.
"Maybe they have visited us in Times Square," Tyson tells us. "But no one noticed because everybody who hangs out in Times Square is just a little crazy."
A more serious concern, though, is that maybe humans are so stupid and uncivilized that aliens have decided we're not worth encountering.
Neil deGrasse Tyson talks about aliens and why it actually might be a good thing that aliens haven't visited Earth yet.

Cosmic Queries: Space and Science Part 2 (Full Episode)
Ready for even more of your Cosmic Queries about space and science with guest host Bill Nye the Science Guy and comic co-host Chuck Nice?
Find out what Bill Nye thinks we should explore next with the Large Hadron Collider and whether plant life on exoplanets orbiting weaker red dwarf stars might use photosynthesis. Discover the best ways to change the trajectory of an Earth-bound asteroid and which comets have came closest to Earth without hitting us. You'll learn about microwave clock circuits, global positioning satellites, the impact of technology on human evolution, the interaction of gravity in multi-planet systems and how to figure out the gravitational attraction between a man and a woman -- although Chuck offers his own way to solve that problem.
Plus, get Bill's take on dealing with the anti-vaccine crowd and climate change deniers.
