"A New York man has lost his leg after a crucifix, to which he had regularly prayed, fell on top of it.
David Jimenez, 45, told CBS New York that during the months his wife was suffering from ovarian cancer, he would frequently stop and pray at a large stone cross outside the Church of St. Patrick in Newburgh, New York.
When his wife was cured in 2010, Kimenez obtained special permission to clean the cross as a way of showing his gratitude.
On Memorial Day of that year, Mid-Hudson News reports, Jimenez was scrubbing the crucifix when the 600-pound monument tumbled on top of him, crushing his right leg.
The leg had to be amputated, and Jimenez, who says he is unable to work, is now suing the archdiocese that presides over the church for $2-3 million.
Jimenez's lawyer, Kevin Kitson, says only a single "useless" screw was supporting the large cross, according to CBS. The suit will be heard in court sometime in over the few weeks, Jimenez's lawyer told the Mid-Hudson News.
The church has already collected food and $7,000 in donations for Jimenez and his family, but, Kitson says, the archdiocese's insurance company has not offered to settle."
