First Tenet of Theism: "Hide your proof in the unknown. When the unknown is discovered, hide your proof in the next unknown." If all of what we define as "nature" was caused by something else, then that something else is not necessarily "supernatural".
The supernatural is just an invention of religion with no real meaningful properties. "Beyond space and time" say nothing really. If our big bang expansion was caused, for instance, by the collision of other big bang expansions, then such an event would be beyond our space and time, but will necessarily entail other space and time. The bottom line is this: don't ever jump to conclusions. Saying that a certain thing can ONLY be a certain way, without having all the pieces to the puzzle, is extremely foolish. Relying on intuition has historically had a hugely poor track record. Don't do that.

Pastor Blames Hurricane on Gays, Ignores Climate Change
A fundamentalist Christian minister has become the first to link Hurricane Sandy to marriage equality and the "homosexual agenda."
'Defend and Proclaim the Faith Ministries' Founder and Pastor John McTernan has blamed Hurricane Sandy on homosexuals and President Obama, reports Gay Star News.
McTernan reportedlty wrote on his blog: "If you add the area of the drought and now the hurricane together, it would be about 80 percent of the country! As I said, the Holy God of Israel is systematically destroying America right before our eyes."
"Just last August, Hurricane Isaac hit New Orleans seven years later, on the exact day of Hurricane Katrina. Both hit during the week of the homosexual event called Southern Decadence in New Orleans!"* Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break down the ridiculous statements that blatantly ignore science and Ana points out how pleasant the weather is in West Hollywood

Woman Lives Biblically For a Year
"Just ahead of the book's release Oct. 30, evangelical author Rachel Held Evans announced that LifeWay Christian Resources had refused to stock her second work, A Year of Biblical Womanhood, which describes her humorous year-long attempt to follow the Bible's rules for women.
LifeWay, which is operated by the Southern Baptist Convention, gave no official reason for the censorship, but it wasn't difficult to guess. Just a few months earlier, Evans had revealed a tangle with her publisher over the word "vagina," the inclusion of which they feared would be too offensive for Christian bookstores.
Evans had allowed other mild profanities ("damn," "kick-ass") to be stripped from her manuscript, but she drew the line at "vagina." Her publisher, Thomas Nelson, allowed her to keep it in, but their fears proved correct."
* Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, and Ben Mankiewicz break down Evans' experiment and what it proves about following literal rules from the Bible.

Sex, Death And The Meaning Of Life - Episode 2
Richard Dawkins explores what science can tell us about death.
It's a journey that takes him from Hindu funeral pyres in India to genetics labs in New York.
Dawkins brings together the latest neuroscience, evolutionary and genetic theory to examine why we crave life after death, why we evolved to age and how the human genome is something like real immortality - traits inherited from our distant ancestors that we pass on to future generations.
He meets a Christian dying of motor neurone disease, reminisces about the Wall Street Crash with a 105-year-old stockbroker, and interviews James Watson, the geneticist who co-discovered the structure of DNA.
Dawkins admits to sentimentality in imagining his own church funeral, but he argues we must embrace the truth, however hard that is.
In a television first, he has his entire genome sequenced to reveal the genetic indicators of how he himself may die.

Evangelical pastor Robert Jeffress stole the Friday news cycle with his comments that Mitt Romney, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was a "non-Christian" in a "cult"-- shortly after having introduced Rick Perry as speaker at the Values Voter Summit. Jeffress elaborated on his comments last night to CNN's Anderson Cooper in an interview where he argued Catholicism defied the New Testament and suggested President Obama's "purported" Christianity was not enough to sway his vote.

The Mind's Big Bang
Fifty thousand years ago, something happened, the modern human mind emerged, triggering a creative, technological, and social explosion. What forces contributed to that breakthrough? Where might our power of mind ultimately lead us? Evolution determines who lives, who dies, and who passes traits on to the next generation. The process plays a critical role in our daily lives, yet it is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood concepts ever described. The Evolution series goals are to heighten public understanding of evolution and how it works, to dispel common misunderstandings about the process.
The Evolution project's eight-hour television miniseries travels the world to examine evolutionary science and the profound effect it has had on society and culture. From the genius and torment of Charles Darwin to the scientific revolution that spawned the tree of life, from the power of sex to drive evolutionary change to the importance of mass extinctions in the birth of new species, the Evolution series brings this fascinating process to life. The series also explores the emergence of consciousness, the origin and success of humans, and the perceived conflict between science and religion in understanding life on Earth.

Pastor's Speech Against Gay Rights Has Surprise Ending
A Missouri pastor delivered an impassioned speech before the Springfield City Council in which he appeared to be making the case against amending the city's nondiscrimination ordinance to add protection for sexual orientation and gender identity.
The Rev. Phil Snider of Brentwood Christian Church told the council during the August hearing that "this step of gay rights is but another steppingstone toward the immorality and lawlessness that will be characteristic of the last days."
He continued along these lines, citing the Bible and his religious beliefs to make his case.
But then, near the very end of the speech, he started to lose this train of thought (or so you're led to believe). And after that, something unexpected and wonderful happens.

Charles Darwin's Dangerous Idea
Why does Charles Darwin's "dangerous idea" matter more today than ever, and how does it explain the past and predict the future of life on Earth? The first show interweaves the drama of Darwin's life with current documentary sequences, introducing key concepts of evolution. Evolution determines who lives, who dies, and who passes traits on to the next generation. The process plays a critical role in our daily lives, yet it is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood concepts ever described. The Evolution series goals are to heighten public understanding of evolution and how it works, to dispel common misunderstandings about the process, and to illuminate why it is relevant to all of us.

Mutations produce nothing new
This week, Dr. Brad Harrub demonstrates a shocking lack of understanding of the mechanisms by which evolution explores fitness space. I'll explain how actual biologists mentally think about the processes that lead to changes in fitness.
Evolution doesn't, as most people think, move like an arrow towards higher fitness. It's more like a drunk walk. It gets there in the end, but explores a lot of area looking for landmarks. This "random walk" effect is important to allow for exploration of new fitness peaks, even when getting there involves accepting a decrease in fitness.
This is the last of the pre-produced Harrub videos. It may be a few weeks before I can get around to producing another set.

Evolutionary Transformations
What underlies the incredible diversity of life on Earth? How have complex life forms evolved? The journey from water to land, the return of land mammals to the sea, and the emergence of humans all suggest that creatures past and present are members of a single tree of life.

The Church of Satan - The Thinking Atheist Radio Podcast #76
It was founded by Anton LaVey in the 1960s, called the "Order of the Trapezoid," which later became the governing body of the Church of Satan. It brandishes the name of a dark entity considered God's enemy in many religions. It has its own priesthood. It has a coda for living, as well as a list of "sins" humans should avoid.. It has been the subject of much controversy, often spoken of in whispers cloaked in fear.
Podcast has been edited slightly from its original version for time.
But what IS The Church of Satan? Does it truly worship the devil? What do Satanism's followers have to say?

Creationism Is So Appropriate For Children
Denial of evolution is NOT unique to the United States. Look at the Muslim world. They deny evolution in much greater numbers! They deny the observable fact that you can mix salt and fresh water. That's the kind of denial I'm looking for! And THAT'S why I gave 'em all the oil.
Don't you want to be more like them, America? Like your President? I mean, the Islamic world is the world's most advanced theological — I mean, you could say America—but generally, the Muslim world is where most of the theological innovation still happens.
Sure... You can say that people still move in the United States. They move, they shake, they dance, they bow and genuflect in worship — they handle serpents, and put their arms up in the air — have you seen that(?) — like I'm holding them at gunpoint. And that's largely because of the spiritual capital America has left.
But America is falling behind — And I think it's because they're no longer teaching Creation Science in the classroom. When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really. Because then, I have to unleash hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, and the occasional Celine Dion hit to remind people of my power and capriciousness... or is it capriciosity?

Anti-Bullying in Judaism
With Simchat Torah just behind us, Jews around the world are ecstatic since we get to restart the reading of the Torah from the beginning. One of the Torah's early stories is about Adam and Eve. Very prominent in their story is the story of the serpent that convinces Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge, of good and evil. The snake tells Eve that God told her she cannot eat from all of the trees in the garden. Eve explained that God told her not to eat, or even touch, certain trees in the midst of the garden.
Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of NJOP, explains that according to the Midrash, the legend, the snake pushed Eve against the tree. Once she already touched the tree, the serpent eggs her on, pointing out that since nothing happened when she touched the tree, Eve might as well eat the fruit, explaining that no punishment will come from that either. He essentially bullies Eve into eating the fruit. There are two ways of showing how great you are. One is by standing up tall. The other is to push the other person down, like the serpent did to Eve. This person, the bully, makes you fail. He makes you sometimes do things you do not want to do. He hurts you.
October has been deemed National Bullying Awareness Month. We should work to stop bullying completely. Not only one month a year. We should have no tolerance for bullying the same way we should have no tolerance for the serpent or for the person who wants to hurt another. We have to stand up strong. We have to stand up proud. Stand by our values. Stand up to those bullies and say that they cannot do this to us. If we do that, we will soon be back in the Garden of Eden. May God Bless You.

Haeckel's Embryo Fraud
Ernst Haeckel was an amazing scientist at a crucial time in the history of biology. The legend of his fraud is largely manufactured.
His work reflected a certain ignorance of comparative embryology, and he probably skewed his illustrations to demonstrate his own theory, the biogenic (or "biogenetic") law. There is no evidence he was every convicted of fraud, he was not "kicked out" of the University of Jena, and all of Dr. Brad Harrub's assertions are based on poor research and factually false claims made by creationist author Jonathan Wells in his book "Icons of Evolution".
Rebutting Brad Harrub: Haeckel's Embryo Fraud
So, let's be clear on something that is often confused.
1. Haeckel's illustrations were an attempt to prove his own biogenic law, not evolution.
2. Comparative embryology, the similarities between tissues during development, show the same branching pattern that is seen in phylogenetics. That is, closely related organisms show very similar stages of development. THIS is the actual evidence for evolution to be taken from pictures of embryos found in textbooks.
Evolution of development ("evo-devo") has been one of the most productive areas of biology of the last two decades. Arguing that Haeckel's failure to prove his biogenetic law somehow affects the value of comparative embryology to demonstrate evolutionary relatedness is just false.
My apologies for the bad camera work. This was mid-way through the talk, and the seats were very uncomfortable. The "jiggling" was me adjusting my position and having to move my phone hand to relieve the strain.

"... wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and bdelightsome, that they might not be centicing unto my people the Lord God did cause a dskin of eblackness to come upon them.
And thus saith the Lord God: I will cause that they shall be aloathsome unto thy people, save they shall repent of their iniquities.
And cursed shall be the seed of him that amixeth with their seed; for they shall be cursed even with the same cursing. And the Lord spake it, and it was done.
And because of their acursing which was upon them they did become an bidle people, full of mischief and subtlety, and did seek in the wilderness for beasts of prey."

Conspiracy Road Trip: Creationism
Comedian Andrew Maxwell takes five British creationists to the west coast of America to try to convince them that evolution rather than creationism explains how we all got here. Stuck on a bus across 2,000 miles of dustbowl roads with these passionate believers, Maxwell tackles some firmly held beliefs - could the Earth be only 6,000 years old, and did humans and T-Rex really live side by side?
It's a bumpy ride as he's confronted with some lively debates along the way, but by the end could he possibly win over any of these believers with what he regards as hard scientific fact?

How Long is a Piece of String?
Alan Davies attempts to answer the proverbial question: how long is a piece of string? But what appears to be a simple task soon turns into a mind-bending voyage of discovery where nothing is as it seems.
An encounter with leading mathematician Marcus du Sautoy reveals that Alan's short length of string may in fact be infinitely long. When Alan attempts to measure his string at the atomic scale, events take an even stranger turn. Not only do objects appear in many places at once, but reality itself seems to be an illusion.
Ultimately, Alan finds that measuring his piece of string could - in theory at least - create a black hole, bringing about the end of the world.

How amazing is God's Forgiveness? Not very
God established the physical laws of the universe, then some moral laws. And decided that the penalty for disobedience would be death, and that he would not forgive any transgression at all.
But he didn't like the outcome. Everybody deserved to die.
So rather than just forgiving, like any decent human being could do, he decided that he really wanted someone to die, so he murdered someone who didn't deserve it, which made him happy, so now he can forgive us, and we are meant to thank him for it.
Christians like to be amazed at God's power to save us. And to be eternally grateful for saving us.
But he's only saving us from himself. Are we meant to be grateful for God just not changing his mind, but insisting instead that he gets a death sentence?
He sacrificed himself to himself to save us from himself. We are meant to view it as mercy, when what it really is is stubborn obstinance, and, rather an absolute UNwillingness to forgive. There had to be death. Coz God said so.
It is ridiculous and this video is an analogy of this amazingly rigid and bizarre rules-punishment-"mercy" mock-up.

Ape To Man
It has long been considered the most compelling question in our history: Where do human beings come from? Although life has existed for millions of years, only in the past century and a half have we begun to use science to explore the ancestral roots of our own species. The search for the ultimate answer has taken a number of twists and turns, with careers made and broken along the way. Ape to Man is the story of the quest to find the origins of the human race a quest that spanned more than 150 years of obsessive searching The search for the origins of humanity is a story of bones and the tales they tell.
It was in 1856 that the first bones of an extinct human ancestor were encountered, unearthed by a crew of unskilled laborers digging for limestone in Western Europe. The find, which would be known as Neanderthal Man, was seeing the light of day for the first time in more than 40,000 years. At the time, the concept of a previous human species was virtually unthinkable. Yet just a few years later, Charles Darwin's work The Origin of Species first broached the subject of evolution, and by the end of the nineteenth century, it had become the hottest topic of the age.

The Importance of Visiting a Sukkah
Sukkot is a very special holiday. Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of NJOP, shares a story from the Talmud about Shammai, the great first century rabbi and student of Hillel. He built a sukkah for his newborn grandson. In Judaism, children before their Bar or Bat Mitzvah are free from the obligation of having a sukkah and performing other mitzvot. So why did Shammai build the sukkah? The rabbis explain that there is a very famous celebration on Sukkot that takes place once every seven years where all of Israel comes together in order to listen to the King teach Torah to all of Israel. This is called Hakel. The rabbis asked, why did children need to attend this event if they don't know what is going on? It was in order to give the parents the credit for bringing them. It was an opportunity to train them, to give them that experience. That is what Shammai was doing. Enabling his grandchild to be in the sukkah and by doing it he was bringing his whole family in.

Bob Dylan - With God On Our Side
Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.
Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.
Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.
Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.
When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.
I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.
But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.
In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.
So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.
My Partner Is Religious
It's more common than many realize. An atheist/agnostic is in a marriage, domestic partnership or long-term relationship with someone who is religious.

Greatest Discoveries : Genetics
Gregor Mendel's work with pea plants pioneered the study of genetics, but it wasn't until the creation of the double helix DNA model that the field really began to take off. Where would we be today if it weren't for the scientists of the past? From the miniature world of genetics to the vast expanse of space, review the greatest discoveries of all time across eight different scientific categories in this multi part series. Join host Bill Nye as he recounts the 100 most important discoveries and explains how each one has shaped the modern world. Watch his lively and dramatic accounts and learn how the great discoveries were made, how they impacted the development of scientific knowledge.
Discoveries Covered In This Episode:
1. Rules of Heredity (1850s) Austrian monk and botanist Gregor Mendel discovers how genetic information is passed down through generations. In experiments performed on pea plants, he notices that characteristics of a plant's offspring, such as height, exhibit recessive and dominant behavior. Mendel's findings are ridiculed during his lifetime and he dies never knowing that he would come to be known as the "father of genetics."
2. Genes Are Located on Chromosomes (1910 -- 1920s) Thomas Hunt Morgan discovers that genes are located on chromosomes. Working on fruit flies, he concludes that certain traits are linked to gender and that those traits are probably carried on one of the sex chromosomes (X or Y). He hypothesizes that other genes are also carried on specific chromosomes. Using chromosome recombination, he and his students map the locations of genes on chromosomes. Morgan writes the seminal book The Mechanism of Mendelian Heredity.
3. Genes Control Biochemical Events (1930) George Beadle and Edward Tatum discover through experiments on neurospora, a bread mold, that genes are responsible for the production of enzymes. Their report is the genesis of the "one gene one enzyme" concept.
4. Some Genes Can Jump (1940) Barbara McClintock discovers transposons genes that can jump on a chromosome while seeking to explain color variations in corn. Transposons are segments of DNA that can move to different positions in the genome of a single cell. In the process, they may cause mutations, increase (or decrease) the amount of DNA in the genome. These segments are sometimes called "jumping genes."
5. DNA Is the Genetic Material (1928, 1944, 1952) Several scientists prove that DNA is the chemical basis of genetic information. Oswald Avery proves that DNA carries genetic information. Linus Pauling discovers that many proteins take the shape of a spiral, like a spring coil. Finally, biochemist Erwin Chargaff finds the arrangement of certain nitrogen bases in DNA always occurs in a 1 to 1 ratio, forming base pairs.
6. DNA Is a Double Helix (1953) The scientists James Watson and Francis Crick suggest that the DNA molecule is made of two chains of nucleotides, each in a helix, one going up and the other going down. Crick adds the idea that matching base pairs interlock in the middle of the double helix to keep the distance between the chains constant. They show that each strand of the DNA molecule is a template for the other, and that DNA can reproduce itself without changing its structure, except for occasional errors or mutations.
7. Cracking the Genetic Code (1960s) Marshall Nirenberg leads the team that discovers the genetic code, showing that a sequence of three nucleotide bases (a codon) determines each of the 20 amino acids.
8. RNA Conveys Genetic Information (1960s) A number of scientists discover ribonucleic acid, or RNA, a chemical found in the nucleus and cytoplasm of cells with a structure similar to DNA. They find that RNA plays an important role in protein synthesis and other chemical activities in the cell.
9. Restriction Enzymes (1950s -- 1960s) Several scientists discover restriction enzymes, biological scissors that recognize and cut specific DNA sequences.
10. RNA Splicing (1976) Several groups of scientists discover RNA splicing. They learn that for cells to produce protein, DNA is first transcribed into pre-messenger RNA. For reasons that remain unclear, pre-messenger RNA molecules are then spliced to create mature messenger RNA. In many genetic diseases, gene mutations cause errors in the RNA splicing process. Improperly spliced messenger RNA molecules create altered proteins and result in disease.
11. DNA Polymorphism (1985) Alec Jeffreys discovers that some DNA sequences are unique to each individual, leading to the birth of DNA forensics. His DNA technique is first used to hunt down a child molester who killed two girls. The suspect, Colin Pitchfork, is convicted of murder after DNA samples taken from him match semen samples.
