Why we must combat blasphemy laws

Michael Nugent, chairperson of Atheist Ireland, speaking at the 2012 European Atheist Conference in Cologne, Germany, organized by IBKA and Atheist Alliance International.

Michael Nugent argues that to campaign against blasphemy laws is central to the campaign for secularism; that blasphemy laws are silly in western democracies and dangerous in Islamic states; and that western states should not placate attempts to silence freedom of expression.

Michael Nugent outlines current examples of blasphemy and apostasy cases that people should campaign on; outlines the history of how blasphemy laws evolved; and describes the battle about blasphemy laws at the United Nations between Islamic states and western democracies.
