Psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Wiseman believes Hubbard's attacks on "psychs" began because Hubbard looked at himself as a scientist and felt his contributions were diminished by having to turn his "modern science of mental heath" into a religion to avoid trouble with the law. This was followed closely by the introduction of the first low-cost, effective pill to fight depression (Miltown) which started to dwarf Scientology in the public's eye.
