Epic creationist fails of our time
Another nominee for the coveted Golden Crocoduck braves the waters of science with the leaky boat of creationist ignorance.
Note 1: In the video I show the Earth as it is today, and the location of the fossil Troodon and Oviraptor eggs in Montana and Mongolia. I described these as "opposite sides of the world." As a couple of viewers pointed out, the configuration of the continents was different in the cretaceous. However, the places where the different eggs were found are still what could be described as "opposite sides of the world." According to my "Atlas of Evolution", only a few degrees off 180 degrees, in fact. I wanted to use a globe representing the cretaceous, but couldn't find one.

Discovering The Elements
The explosive story of chemistry is the story of the building blocks that make up our entire world - the elements. From fiery phosphorous to the pure untarnished lustre of gold and the dazzle of violent, violet potassium, everything is made of elements - the earth we walk on, the air we breathe, even us. Yet for centuries this world was largely unknown, and completely misunderstood.
In this three-part series, professor of theoretical physics Jim Al-Khalili traces the extraordinary story of how the elements were discovered and mapped. He follows in the footsteps of the pioneers who cracked their secrets and created a new science, propelling us into the modern age.
Just 92 elements made up the world, but the belief that were only four - earth, fire, air and water - persisted until the 19th Century. Professor Al-Khalili retraces the footsteps of the alchemists who first began to question the notion of the elements in their search for the secret of everlasting life.
He reveals the red herrings and rivalries which dogged scientific progress, and explores how new approaches to splitting matter brought us both remarkable elements and the new science of chemistry.

On December 9, 2010, the Center for Inquiry -- Transnational in Amherst, New York presented a lecture by James Giordano entitled "Neuroethics: Moral Issues from Synapse to Society."
Neuroscientific inquiry into the brain has made large progress. It is already overthrowing common misconceptions about the mind and why people do what they do. he field of neuroethics is trying to deal with moral questions involved with new brain technologies, arising from both secular and non-secular worldviews. Dr.Giordano's lecture examines these and other issues. He is introduced by John Shook, director of education at the Center for Inquiry.
James Giordano is Director of the Center for Neurotechnology Studies at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies in Arlington, Virginia, and a researcher at the Wellcome Centre for Neuroethics of the University of Oxford.

The Big Bang (video explanation of how the universe began)
Professor Jim Al Khalili delves into over 50 years of the BBC science archive to tell the story behind the emergence of one of the greatest theories of modern science, the Big Bang.
The remarkable idea that our universe simply began from nothing has not always been accepted with the conviction it is today and, from fiercely disputed leftfield beginnings, took the best part of the 20th century to emerge as the triumphant explanation of how the universe began. Using curious horn-shaped antennas, U-2 spy planes, satellites and particle accelerators, scientists have slowly pieced together the cosmological jigsaw, and this documentary charts the overwhelming evidence for a universe created by a Big Bang.

Does Time Really Exist? - Through the Wormhole
Is Time an Illusion?
It is a question that has vexed philosophers and scientists for centuries; 'What is Time?' Exactly how is our past, present, and future connected by that arrow of cause and effect that we call Time? Is time simply another dimension, just like the dimensions of space we know? Can you run time backwards just as easily as it runs forward, just as left-to-right can swap for right-to-left? If other universes exist, then what is time like in them: could their Time be different from ours? And we'll probe the biggest question about time: Is our future determined? Do we exercise free will? Or, is time merely a dream?
Hosted by Morgan Freeman, Through the Wormhole will explore the deepest mysteries of existence - the questions that have puzzled mankind for eternity. What are we made of? What was there before the beginning? Are we really alone? Is there a creator? These questions have been pondered by the most exquisite minds of the human race. Now, science has evolved to the point where hard facts and evidence may be able to provide us with answers instead of philosophical theories. Through the Wormhole will bring together the brightest minds and best ideas from the very edges of science - Astrophysics, Astrobiology, Quantum Mechanics, String Theory, and more - to reveal the extraordinary truth of our Universe.

Newsnight: Faith Healers
Jenny Johnstone works for ThetaHealing, a group of faith healers who claim to be able to cure cancer.
Newsnight sent an undercover researcher, who said she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer, to Warrington to ask the practitioner what ThetaHealing could do for her.
When Newsnight contacted Ms Johnstone after the meeting, she refused to answer any questions. She still insists she has healed a baby's stomach cancer, but said there was no point trying to prove it because the BBC would not believe her anyway.
BBC2 22 June 2011
A group of faith healers who claim they have miracle cures for cancer and HIV have been condemned as "irresponsible, even criminal" by a professor of complementary medicine, following a BBC Newsnight investigation.
The group of healers, collectively known as ThetaHealing, claim that their technique - which focuses on thought and prayer - can teach people to use their natural intuition and "brain wave cycle" to "create instantaneous physical and emotional healing."
ThetaHealing have about 600 practitioners in the UK who charge up to £100 per session.
But the healers' claims have been called "criminal" and "not supported by any kind of evidence" by Edzard Ernst, Professor of Complementary Medicine at the University of Exeter, whose unit not only carry out their own studies but also assess those done by other researchers.
Newsnight recorded Warrington-based ThetaHealing practitioner Jenny Johnstone - who charges £30 for a telephone call or £400 for a course - making a number of claims about the technique, including:
"There was a baby I worked on over the telephone and from one day to the next the cancer in his stomach had just disappeared."
Professor Ernst says such claims are "irresponsible, even criminal".
He believes that the ThetaHealing group try to distinguish themselves from the other 20,000 faith healers in the UK by applying a "veneer of science", but says "it's still nonsense".
Repeated clinical trials appear to show that although such faith healing might make people feel better, it does not cure disease. Professor Ernst conducted one such trial which pitched faith healers against actors pretending to be faith healers and found the actors performed better than the healers.
One former client of ThetaHealing - who did not wish to be identified - told the BBC that he was "angry and embarrassed" that he had wasted £1,200 on their healing and missed two years of proper medical treatment.
"There was never any suggestion I should go back to my doctor, which is what I needed to do," he told us.
On ThetaHealing's website it says that Vianna Stibal, the American founder of the group, "facilitated her own instant healing from cancer in 1995".
It also says that Ms Stibal conducts seminars around the world to teach people about ThetaHealing, and that she has trained teachers and practitioners who are now working in 14 countries.
Earlier this month, Ms Stibal visited the UK to address a meeting at the London School of Economics (LSE).
At the meeting Ms Stibal responded to a question from an audience member who asked if it was possible for ThetaHealing to make an amputated leg grow back:
"I believe it's possible to grow it back... a lady grew back her ovary... you can grow back a leg. I've seen people grow back," she told attendees.
Some of the 100 people who attended the event told a BBC researcher that they were reassured about the legitimacy of the group by the fact that the meeting was being held at the LSE.
The LSE told Newsnight that ThetaHealing's meeting was a "normal commercial booking".
Further remarks made by Vianna Stibal at the London meeting, whereby she claimed that ThetaHealing could effectively reduce HIV to undetectable levels, have also alarmed Aids charity the Terrence Higgins Trust.
"The fact is we've seen charlatans of this kind all the way through the HIV epidemic," Lisa Power of the Trust told Newsnight. "Those charlatans are more dangerous than ever now that we have effective treatment."
Ms Power worries that some patients could put their lives at risk by delaying taking effective anti-retroviral drugs in favour of pursuing faith healing.
Both Vianna Stibal and Jenny Johnstone refused to answer questions from Newsnight. Ms Johnstone still insists she has healed a baby's stomach cancer, but said there was no point in her trying to prove it because the BBC would not believe her anyway.

Is Smoking a Sin?
The FDA has announced that packages of cigarettes will have to include one of nine graphic images that show the harmful effects of smoking. Is that good or bad? What does Jewish law say about smoking? Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, Director of Jewish Treats' parent organization, the National Jewish Outreach Program, offers a short history of the Jewish attitude toward smoking, as well as his own opinions.
Deuteronomy 4:15 says that you should take care of your body and you shouldn't do anything to harm it. If that's the case, then why aren't rabbis saying that smoking is not kosher? One reason is this: One of the great decisers of Jewish law in the last generation was Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. Smoking was very popular in the '40s, '50s and '60s. Almost everyone smoked, including many rabbis. Then the United States Surgeon General came out against it, informing people that smoking causes cancer and other health problems. When Rabbi Feinstein was asked if Jews can smoke, he basically said no, but then added "You're not allowed to decree something on the community that the community is not going to hold." Because of this, Rabbi Feinstein refused to write a decree telling Jews that is is prohibited, even though he acknowledged that is it indeed harmful and one should not smoke cigarettes. Because of Rabbi Feinstein's stature, other rabbis were afraid to oppose him, even as the times had changed.
Rabbi Buchwald believes that over the next few years, the mood will shift and we will see rabbis taking a strong stand against smoking. He believes that the FDA is doing a job for us. When we weren't out there enforcing the laws of the Torah, the FDA did. He hopes that ultimately everyone will give up smoking cigarettes.
Smokeout
As the world changes, the modern day sages must often reevaluate the application of Jewish law in order to correlate it with the findings of contemporary medicine. One of the best examples of this challenge is cigarette smoking. Originally, smoking was assumed to have many health benefits. After all, smokers seemed to feel refreshed and relaxed, a beneficial physical side effect. From a Torah perspective, the only apparent problem with smoking was lighting a cigarette on Shabbat (prohibited).
Toward the middle of the 20th century, however, scientists and doctors came to better understand the true effects of the cigarette. It is now common knowledge that smoking has many negative effects on the body. By the time this information became common knowledge, however, smoking was a common vice, and rabbinic authorities understood that an outright ban on smoking would be too difficult to enforce (especially given the addictive nature of nicotine).
When the issue of cigarette smoking was raised with Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, regarded as one of the greatest Jewish legal minds of the 20th century, he strongly discouraged the habit but did not outlaw it outright.* His primary source against prohibiting smoking totally was from Yebamot 72a: "Since many people are in the habit of disregarding these precautions, 'The Lord preserves the simple' (Psalms 116:6). This statement has always been understood that there are some dangerous practices that are not prohibited because it is already the custom of too many people, but that those who are wise should certainly abstain from this behavior. Today, however, there are many strong calls to ban smoking entirely.
*This ruling was given in 1981. He included in his ruling a prohibition against starting to smoke.
One of the subcategories of the mitzvah of pikuach nefesh (saving a person's life) is taking care of one's own health. In this vein, the National Jewish Outreach Program has been involved in a campaign encouraging people not to smoke on Shabbat. While intended for smokers, the recommendations apply to all.

Wonders Of The Universe - Episode 2: Stardust
In the second stop in his exploration of the wonders of the universe, Professor Brian Cox goes in search of humanity's very essence to answer the biggest questions of all: what are we? And where do we come from? This film is the story of matter - the stuff of which we are all made.
Brian Cox reveals how our origins are entwined with the life cycle of the stars. But he begins his journey here on Earth. In Nepal, he observes a Hindu cremation. Hindu philosophy is based on an eternal cycle of creation and destruction, where the physical elements of the body are recycled on to the next stage. Brian draws a parallel with the life cycle of the stars that led to our own creation.
Next, he explains how the Earth's resources have been recycled through the ages. How every atom that makes up everything we see, was at some time a part of something else. Our world is made up of just 92 elements, and these same 92 elements are found throughout the entire universe. We are part of the universe because we are made of the same stuff as the universe.

Science Saved My Soul (with Phil Hellenes)
PhilHellenes (arguably) most popular video, "Science Saved My Soul," has created huge waves across YouTube. His home page possibly best sums up Phil's philosphy for living: "Learning and understanding are far easier than you think. All you need is curiosity. The truth is beautiful."
Evolution: How We Know it Happened & Why it Matters (with Dr Donald Prothero)
The HOTTEST CULTURAL CONTROVERSY of 2005 was the Intelligent Design challenge to the theory of evolution, being played out in classrooms and courtrooms across America. The crux of the argument made by proponents of Intelligent Design is that the theory of evolution is in serious trouble.
They claim that the evidence for evolution is weak, the gaps in the theory are huge, and that these flaws should be taught to students. In this brilliant synthesis of scientific data and theory, Occidental College geologist, paleontologist, and evolutionary theorist Dr. Donald Prothero will present the best evidence we have that evolution happened, why Darwins theory still matters, and what the real controversies are in evolutionary biology.
Dr. Donald Prothero teaches Physical and Historical Geology, Sedimentary Geology, and Paleontology. His specialties are mammalian paleontology and magnetic stratigraphy of the Cenozoic. Donald Protheros current research focuses on the dating of the climatic changes that occurred between 30 and 40 million years ago, using the technique of magnetic stratigraphy.
Donald Prothero is the author of
"Evolution of the Earth,"
"Bringing Fossils to Life,"
"After the Dinosaurs,"
"Horns, Tusks, and Flippers: The Evolution of Hoofed Mammals,"
"Sedimentary Geology."

Journal Club: HFCS vs. sucrose
I'd like to start a new series where I present an interesting paper in a way that they are accessible to non-scientists. Today is an article that presents some puzzling results when comparing sucrose to HFCS consumption in rats. There are some methodological problems with how they conducted the study, but it's still an interesting result, and would be good to see it repeated.

The Histories of America by Betty Bowers
America's Best Christian, Mrs. Betty Bowers, recites the first cantos of her poem "The Histories of America" to her 5,703-student K-12 Sunday School class. Some of her and Jesus' favorite students have joyously provided illustrations for the poem.
The Histories of America - part 1 by Betty Bowers
America's not as she was today.
She wasn't even that way yesterday.
Our story's like Jesus' nativity.
Conflicting with infallibility.
This Land was found to give the Church a mate.
Or just a quickie divorce from the State.
But who cares how posterity sees us?
Soon, we'll be sipping cocktails with Jesus!

Wonders Of The Universe - Destiny
Having explored the wonders of the solar system, Professor Brian Cox steps boldly on to an even bigger stage - the universe.
Who are we? Where do we come from? For thousands of years humanity has turned to religion and myth for answers to these enduring questions. But in this series, Brian presents a different set of answers - answers provided by science.
In this episode, Brian seeks to understand the nature of time and its role in creating both the universe and ourselves. From an extraordinary calendar built into the landscape of Peru to the beaches of Costa Rica, Brian explores the cycles of time which define our experience of life on Earth. But even the most epic cycles of life can't begin to compare to the vast expanse of cosmic time.
For instance, just as the Earth orbits the Sun, the solar system orbits the entire Milky Way galaxy. This orbit takes a staggering 250 million years to complete.
Ultimately, Brian discovers that time is not characterised by repetition but by irreversible change. From the relentless march of a glacier, to the decay of an old mining town, the ravaging effects of time are all around us. The vast universe is subject to these same laws of change. As we look out to the cosmos, we can see the story of its evolution unfold, from the death of the first stars to the birth of the youngest. This journey from birth to death will ultimately lead to the destruction not just of our planet, but also the entire universe, and with it the end of time itself.
Yet without this inevitable destruction, the universe would be without what is perhaps the greatest wonder of all; the brief moment in time in which life can exist.

Human Evolution and Why It Matters: A Conversation with Leakey and Johanson
Celebrating decades of groundbreaking exploration in East Africa, renowned paleoanthropologists Donald Johanson and Richard Leakey shared the stage at the American Museum of Natural History on May 5 to discuss the overwhelming evidence for evolution in the hominid fossil record and why understanding our evolutionary history is so important. The discussion, before a sold-out crowd in the Museum's LeFrak Theater, was moderated by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, chief medical correspondent for CNN. The event was also live-streamed on amnh.org to a digital audience of several hundred viewers around the country.
Known for such landmark discoveries as "Lucy" (Johanson) and "Turkana Boy" (Leakey), the work of these two scientists has produced much of the fossil evidence that forms our understanding of human evolution.
Looking back over careers spanning 40-plus years, Dr. Johanson and Dr. Leakey shared the stories behind their monumental finds and offered a look at what's ahead in human evolutionary research.
This historic event was made possible through a joint partnership of the American Museum of Natural History, the Arizona State University Institute of Human Origins, and the Turkana Basin Institute, headquartered in the U.S. at Stony Brook University.

Peter Popoff - still scamming after all these years
Members of Think Again! TV and the Centre for Inquiry, via a secret source, obtained invitation-only tickets to a live faith healing/supernatural debt relief event featuring Peter Popoff at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on May 26, 2011.
Footage shows Popoff engaging in "healings", hosting testimonials and requesting large sums of money from the audience. Also features a sick man being turned away, and the description of an altercation in which - rather ironically - the organist for this "faith healer" wished upon us death by cancer.
Secret Footage of "Faith Healer" Peter Popoff in Toronto May 2011
Background:
Peter Popoff was a famous 1980s faith healer proven a fraud by skeptic James Randi on the tonight show with Johnny Carson. James Randi and his assistants used a radio scanner to intercept transmissions from Popoff's wife Elizabeth giving the prophet information about members of the audience, including their address and ailments. After being exposed, his popularity declined sharply, and Popoff declared bankruptcy in 1987.
20 years later, Popoff returned, ironically now combining supernatural debt relief, of all things, with his old faith healing tricks. He has become a profitable prophet once again.

Everything and Nothing
Two-part documentary which deals with two of the deepest questions there are - what is everything, and what is nothing?
In two epic, surreal and mind-expanding films, Professor Jim Al-Khalili searches for an answer to these questions as he explores the true size and shape of the universe and delves into the amazing science behind apparent nothingness.
Everything
The first part, Everything, sees Professor Al-Khalili set out to discover what the universe might actually look like. The journey takes him from the distant past to the boundaries of the known universe. Along the way he charts the remarkable stories of the men and women who discovered the truth about the cosmos and investigates how our understanding of space has been shaped by both mathematics and astronomy.
Nothing
The second part, Nothing, explores science at the very limits of human perception, where we now understand the deepest mysteries of the universe lie. Jim sets out to answer one very simple question - what is nothing? His journey ends with perhaps the most profound insight about reality that humanity has ever made. Everything came from nothing. The quantum world of the super-small shaped the vast universe we inhabit today, and Jim can prove it.

Hypocrites - Bastrop High School
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Ring species - the abridged version
Several people asked potholer54 to make a video on ring species alone, suitable for viewing by their creationist friends. So here it is.
potholer54e used the example of the greenish warbler, after someone pointed out that the ensatina is not the best example of a ring species. Hybrids of the two end-species in the ensatina ring exist in two locations, whereas there are no hybrids from the two end-species descended from the greenish warbler.
The gap you will see in the orange-colored area covering the obscuratus on the map of Asia (at around 3:00 mins) is caused by human habitation which has eliminated the obscuratus from that particular area.
