I find Spong and others like him amazing in that they are phenomenally educated and they reject the religion that fed them. They move, for all purposes, exactly like atheists - except they believe in a lowercase g god. Is it that rejecting that one last vestige of god is to reject their own authority gained thru decades of theology? If not from the ancient texts or personal experience, where do they get this notion of god? As an atheist myself, I can't help but see this man as not believing in the red-suited-bearded Santa but still believing in the concept of santa. Really? It seems duplicitous to continue to wear the vestments of his chosen religion but to renounce it. He talks of christ as a concept but denies the resurection or christ's godhead. Remove all the woo and Jesus is not a christ but a guy with the sermon on the mount to his credit. I know, I am not schooled enough to know to hold a candle to this guy and his deep thoughts. But if you spend decades of studying a book that you admit is false, who's the smarty? - Bruce in Orlando
