Magician & Skeptic Penn Jillette at Centre for Inquiry: "Everyday is an atheist holiday"
Magician Penn Jillette at Centre for Inquiry in Toronto. An exclusive evening with the skeptical funnyman talking about his experiences as a skeptic and atheist, and discussing his new book: 'Every Day Is an Atheist Holiday!'
Penn Jillette is a cultural phenomenon as a solo personality and as half of the world-famous Emmy Award winning magic duo and Las Vegas headliners Penn & Teller.
His solo exposure is enormous: from Howard Stern to Piers Morgan, from Oprah to Glenn Beck, to the Op-Ed pages of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. He has appeared on Dancing with the Stars, MTV Cribs, and Chelsea Lately, and hosted the NBC game show Identity. As part of Penn & Teller, he has appeared more than twenty times on David Letterman, as well as on several other TV shows, from The Simpsons, and Friends to Top Chef and Jimmy Fallon.
He cohosted the controversial Showtime series Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, which was nominated for sixteen Emmy Awards and was the longest-running show in the history of the network. He most recently cohosted the Discovery Channel's Penn & Teller Tell A Lie and was part of the most recent cast of NBC's Celebrity Apprentice.
Together since 1975, Penn & Teller's live show spent years on Broadway and is now the longest-running headliner show in Las Vegas where it plays nightly at The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. In 2013 the pair was once again awarded Las Vegas Magicians of the Year.
Penn's latest book, "Every Day Is An Atheist Holiday," takes an insightful and very humorous look at holidays from an Atheist's perspective. His previous book, "God No! Signs You Might Be An Atheist and Other Magic Tales," spent six weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list upon its release.
His new podcast, Penn's Sunday School, was the No. 1 downloaded podcast on iTunes during its debut week and was named by iTunes as Best New Comedy Podcast for 2012.
As a philanthropist, his efforts have resulted in raising thousands of dollars for Las Vegas-based charities AFAN (AID for AIDS NV) and Opportunity Village. The annual "Penn & Teller's 13 Bloody Days of Xmas" continues to be the most successful blood drive in the Vegas Valley resulting in an average of 4000 pints donated every holiday season.
In April of this year, Penn & Teller were given their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Mindful Self-Acceptance? Bad Idea According to Ancient Chinese Philosophers
Asian philosophies have proven extremely influential in the United States, but are they being interpreted correctly? Frequently not, says Harvard China historian Michael Puett, who focuses on two main ideas in this video: one transported relatively recently to the United States, and another that sheds new light on the so-called naturalistic fallacy.
First up is mindfulness meditation: a practice that has become all the rage for anyone looking to live calmer, more focussed lives. It sounds innocent enough, says Puett, but the goal of distancing yourself from negative emotion presents real risks. If you find a way to cope with negative emotion without changing the material circumstances around you — focusing on internal sources of stress to the exclusion of external ones — you may begin to accept harmful treatment.
This is likewise the case with "finding your true self," which Puett claims is little more than accepting your circumstances and normalizing potentially destructive patterns of behavior. When we search for ourselves, we search for some authentic, natural self. But putting nature on a pedestal ignores the very real call to action that Chinese philosophy presents.
Puett's latest book is "The Path: What Chinese Philosophers Can Teach Us About the Good Life"

Everyone's a Sinner (Atheist animation)
This is a sequel to my video, Christian Justice. Christians can call you a sinner even if you're a good person. How? Because, according to them, you can be convicted by your very thoughts! Is it more honorable to have these thoughts, but exercise self-control, or to just be a perfect little robot, like Jesus? Moderate Christians, I realize that you might say that Jesus was trying to teach others to nip their sin in the bud, before thought becomes action, but this video more so addresses the fundamentalist - not you. Though I would like to know how you decide which parts of the bible to take literally, and which to take figuratively.

Jimmy Kimmel and Scientists on Climate Change
Jimmy takes a moment to talk about climate change and the confusing political argument that has emerged around it. NASA says that 97 percent of climate scientists agree that the warming we are experiencing is very likely due to human activity - but some politicians still want us to believe it’s all a hoax. So we enlisted the help of real climate scientists to clear some things up for us.

Broke by ESPN: Why Athletes go Broke!
According to a 2009 Sports Illustrated article, 60 percent of former NBA players are broke within five years of retirement. By the time they have been retired for two years, 78% of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress.
Sucked into bad investments, stalked by freeloaders, saddled with medical problems, and naturally prone to showing off, many pro athletes get shocked by harsh economic realities after years of living the high life. Drawing surprisingly vulnerable confessions from retired stars like Keith McCants, Bernie Kosar and Andre Rison, as well as Marvin Miller, the former executive director of the MLB Players Association, this fascinating documentary digs into the psychology of men whose competitive nature can carry them to victory on the field and ruin off it.
Director Billy Corben (The U, Cocaine Cowboys, Limelight) paints a complex picture of the many forces that drain athletes' bank accounts, placing some of the blame on the culture at large while still holding these giants accountable for their own hubris.
A story of the dark side of success, "Broke," is an allegory for the financial woes haunting economies and individuals all over the world.

...but intelligent people believe in God
Why have so many intelligent people believed in God?
Allow me to count the ways.
As someone who never believed in God, people who had to deconvert really impress me. You overcame so many odds. The deck has always been stacked against you, yet you prevailed. You were honest with yourself. Don't buy into the idea that figuring out God doesn't exist is no big deal. It is a big deal. You found your way out of an intricate maze that was brilliantly designed to contain you for a lifetime. There are geniuses who couldn't do what you did.

The Bitcoin Gospel
Is bitcoin the blueprint for a bankless currency, or the biggest pyramid scheme ever?
What if we could create money ourselves, without the need for banks? Money that can’t be forged, that will appreciate rather than depreciate, and that can be used worldwide without transaction costs. It exists, and some people consider it to be the digital version of gold: bitcoin. Is this really a perfect bankless alternative for the failing finance sector, or are we simply shifting power from the current elite to a new one?
When the financial world collapsed in 2008, a mysterious genius under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto presented the architecture for the perfect, bankless currency. Bitcoins can’t be forged, and can be transferred worldwide with one click of a button, without transaction costs. Up till today, nobody knows who Nakamoto is, but his invention of the first decentralized cryptocurrency became world-famous within a couple of years. Bitcoin was initially dismissed as unsafe and only interesting to criminals. But in fits and starts, the exchange rate kept going up, and more and more banks and governments are realizing that bitcoin is an invention they can’t ignore.
‘Bitcoin Jesus’ Roger Ver invested massively in bitcoins when they were still worth less than a dollar, and in 2013 he saw the bitcoin exchange rate reaching as much as 1000 dollars. He sees the cryptocurrency as a digital replacement for gold, and therefore as the perfect means to undermine corrupt government policy and a failing financial sector. And maybe even as the recipe for world peace. However, the question is whether the bitcoin community won’t fall prey to the same perverse incentives as the financial system bitcoin wanted to replace. Because of the gold rush that arose around the new, democratic currency, bitcoin is now mainly in the hands of a small elite of early adopters.
What’s the bottom line, now that this globally disruptive currency has grown to maturity? Is bitcoin the blueprint for fair money, separated from banks or states, or will it be a new hierarchy froom haves and have-nots?
Including Roger Ver (bitcoin evangelist in Tokyo), Izabella Kaminska (journalist Financial Times), Marshall Long (CEO of Final Hash, one of the world’s largest bitcoin mines in USA), and cameos by Max Keiser. Director: Hans Busstra

A Gottle of Gear - Ventriloquism - Documentary
Here’s a lovely and unique documentary about Ventriloquism written and presented by the late great ventriloquist Ray Alan broadcast in 1986 on Channel 4. It includes numerous clips of famous ventriloquists, and. Apologies for the 3 clips I have had to remove to comply with youtubes copyright requirements to avoid having this valuable documentary blocked.
Ventriloquism, or ventriloquy, is an act of stagecraft in which a person (a ventriloquist) changes his or her voice so that it appears that the voice is coming from elsewhere, usually a puppeteered “dummy”. The act of ventriloquism is ventriloquizing, and the ability to do so is commonly called in English the ability to “throw” one’s voice.
Originally, ventriloquism was a religious practiceThe name comes from the Latin for to speak from the stomach, i.e. venter (belly) and loqui (speak).[2] The Greeks called this gastromancy The noises produced by the stomach were thought to be the voices of the unliving, who took up residence in the stomach of the ventriloquist. The ventriloquist would then interpret the sounds, as they were thought to be able to speak to the dead, as well as foretell the future. One of the earliest recorded group of prophets to utilise this technique was the Pythia, the priestess at the temple of Apollo in Delphi, who acted as the conduit for the Delphic
