Richard Dawkins versus Muhammad's Buraq horse
An interview by a Muslim with renowned atheist Richard Dawkins on whether religion is a force for good or evil.
A believing Muslim talks with Richard Dawkins about "when" Muhammed flew to heaven on a winged horse.
Towards the end of the video you can see the place where Muslims says prophet Muhammad tied Buraq on his way to heaven, when he made a stop over at Jerusalem and spent the night there. Fascinating.
"...Al-Buraq, a white animal, smaller than a mule and bigger than a donkey was brought to me and I set out with Gabriel..."
(Sahih Bukhari Vol 4, Book 54. Beginning Of Creation. Hadith 429.)

Atheists Respond to Trusworthiness Comparison with Rapists
In November 2011 a study of University of British Columbia students between the ages of 18 and 25 revealed that when presented with a description of an untrustworthy person -- an "archetypal freerider" who committed selfish and illegal acts when he thought he could get away with it - subjects were more likely to find the description representative of atheists than Christians, Muslims, Jews, or any religious or racial group.
The only people that came close to being as mistrusted were rapists.
In response, the Centre for Inquiry's "Good Without God" Campaign invited atheists of all backgrounds to record short videos explaining who they are, how they contribute to society and why they are indeed moral people.

Jupiter and Moon REALLY close
Xmas day, 2012, and the Moon passes REALLY close to Jupiter (a conjunction). The cute thing is that with a camcorder (and not anything too high end either) you can get both a reasonable view of the moon and zoom in and see the moons of Jupiter. Indeed this is probably within the reach of most video cameras made over the last few years.

Was the New Testament Forged? Bart Ehrman vs Darrell Bock
Sceptical Bible scholar Bart Ehrman's latest book "Forged" claims that many of the writings of the New Testament are falsely attributed to apostles such as Peter and Paul. Bart D. Ehrman claims that they were not written by them and that a deliberate deception was taking place.
Darrell Bock of Dallas Theological Seminary responds, saying that the case for forgery is not as conclusive as Bart claims.
They examine the evidence for whether 1 and 2 Peter were written by Peter as well as letters attributed to Paul such as Ephesians and 2 Thessolonians.

This is why religion poisons everything. After such a tragedy, all eyes should be focused on what the actual causes were and ways of preventing it from happening again.
Instead you have religious sorts like the ex-presidential candidate Mike Huckerbee going around speculating that not telepathically telling a magic man (that no one has ever seen) that they loved him meant the magic man felt spurned and rejected and so decided not to help while a real man with a bushmaster assault weapon gunned down 30 or so children and teachers.

1.1 billion has no religion
Those who say they have no religious affiliation or say they do not believe in God — at 1. 1 billion, or 16 percent. That means that about the same number of people who identify as Catholics worldwide say they have no religion.
The report found nearly 51 million religiously unaffiliated Americans, or about 16.4 percent of the U.S. population. That number is smaller than the 19 percent of Americans Pew reported earlier this year. Researchers attribute this discrepancy to the fact that their 2012 report was based on information from adults only, and the newest report includes the religious adherence of children, which tends to be higher than that of adults.

The Essential Value of a Classic Education
Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: The Essential Value of a Classic Education.
JEFFREY BRENZEL, Philosopher, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale University
Dean Brenzel argues that not only can reading the great classics like Plato's Republic and Dante's Inferno enrich your education, it can actually make your life better. Pointing out that we can't possibly read all of the books in the world, Brenzel makes a case for reading the right books the right way in order to get the most intellectual bang for your reading buck. Which books qualify as the "right" books is one of the most controversial subjects in academia, and Brenzel outlines the five key characteristics that every great book must fulfill in order to make that coveted list.

Brain, Mind and Consciousness
The Brain, Mind & Consciousness conference, on what Nobel Laureate Francis Crick called "the greatest unsolved problem in biology," was held over the weekend of May 13--15, 2005 at Caltech.
Research on the brain, mind, and consciousness was given a significant boost by Nobel laureate Dr. Francis Crick in 1994, when he wrote in his book, The Astonishing Hypothesis: The Scientific Search for the Soul, "that 'you,' your joys and your sorrows, your memories and your ambitions, your sense of personal identity and free will, are in fact no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules."
This is what is called "the hard problem"—explaining how billions of neurons swapping chemicals give rise to such subjective experiences as consciousness, self-awareness, and awareness that others are conscious and self-aware; that is, not only the ability to wonder, but the ability to wonder why we wonder, and even wonder why others wonder why....
Explaining each of the functional parts of the brain is the easy problem, such as the differences between waking and sleep, discrimination of stimuli, or the control of behavior. By contrast, what has come to be known as the hard problem in consciousness studies is experience: what it is like to be in a given mental state? Adding up all of the solved easy problems does not equal a solution to the hard problem. Something else is going on in private subjective experiences—called qualia—and there is no consensus on what it is.
Dualists hold that qualia are separate from physical objects in the world and that mind is more than brain. Materialists contend that qualia are ultimately explicable through the activities of neu- rons and that mind and brain are one. Our speakers, some of the top neuroscientists in the world, will address these and other problems, such as the evolution of the brain, and how and why it got to be so large. Skeptics will get a chance to interact with these world-class scientists on the breaks, during meals, and in a formal discussion period. We will also consider the implications of this new brain research to better understand apparent paranormal phenomena, as well as how and why people believe weird things.
Lectures included: The Quest for Consciousness: A Neurobiological Approach with Dr. Christof Koch, Children as Scientists: How the Brain Learns to Think with Dr. Alison Gopnik, In Search of Memory — True, False, Repressed, Recovered with Dr. Richard McNally, Sleep, Dreams, and the Subconscious with Dr. Terry Sejnowski, Exploring Altered States of Consciousness with Dr. Susan Blackmore, The Search for the Neurological Basis of the Social Emotions with Dr. John Allman, From Whence Trust Comes: Oxytocin and Behavioral Economics with Dr. Paul Zak, Consciousness is Nothing But a Word with Dr. Hank Schlinger, and From Biology to Consciousness to Morality with Dr. Ursula Goodenough.

The Matt Dillahunty Mission Statement
This caller wants to know what motivates Matt and Jeff to do what they do. Matt states his desire is to change the World and eliminate religion. Matt also explains that truth has value, and his main motivation is to determine the truth. The caller has a hard time understanding whether the cost of supporting an Atheistic world view some how out weighs the benefits. Matt and Jeff both explain there is no cost in broadcasting the truth to the world, and that it's important to stand for what you believe. Matt also reminds the caller there is no pressure placed on those with secular values to be the poster child for logic and reason. As he has said many times if exposing your lack of belief in God threatens your job or relationships that are important to you, then you are under no obligation to do so. If you ever wanted to know what makes Matt and Jeff tick, this clip is for you. Enjoy.

The Gospel of Judas - Bart Ehrman & Darrell Bock
"The reappearance of the Gospel of Judas will rank among the greatest finds from Christian antiquity and is without doubt the most important archaeological discovery of the past 60 years. What will make this gospel famous—or infamous, perhaps—is that it portrays Judas quite differently from anything we previously knew.
Here Judas is not the evil, corrupt, devil-inspired follower of Jesus who betrayed his master; he is instead Jesus' closest intimate and friend, the one who understood Jesus better than anyone else, who turned Jesus over to the authorities because Jesus wanted him to do so.
This gospel has a completely different understanding of God, the world, Christ, salvation, human existence—not to mention of Judas himself—than came to be embodied in the Christian creeds and canon. It will open up new vistas for understanding Jesus and the religious movement he founded."

France bans all public prayer
The French government has enacted a new law prohibiting teists from praying in the streets, but on the first day of the ban hundreds of Muslims defied the law by taking over streets and sidewalks in Paris and other French cities to pray.
Every Friday, thousands of Muslims from Paris to Marseille and elsewhere close off streets and sidewalks (by doing so, they close down local businesses and trap non-Muslim residents in their homes and offices) to accommodate overflowing crowds for midday prayers. Some mosques have also begun broadcasting sermons and chants of "Allahu Akbar" via loudspeakers in the streets.

The Heroes of the Chanukah Story
In the year 199 BCE, the Seleucid Greeks took over the area of Judea where the Jews lived and in 167 BCE Antiochus became the Emperor and began to oppress the Jews, demanding they become more like the Greeks. The rebellion began when Mattathias and his 5 sons killed a Hellenistic Jew who had offered a pagan sacrifice. Mattathias and his sons were basically the first guerrilla fighters. They were able to chase the Syrian troops out of Judea. Antiochus kept trying to fight back but was unsuccessful.
There are many heroic stories that occurred during this time including the group of Jews who hid in a cave to escape the oppression. When the Syrian Greeks came after them, rather than fight on the Sabbath, the Greeks set a fire and 1,000 people perished. It was then that the Maccabbees decided that the life of a person is greater than the Sabbath, and one should fight on Shabbat.
There is also the story of Hannah and her seven sons. They were each asked to bow down to Antiochus. Each one refused and was killed. When the last child came Antiochus tried to trick him by throwing his ring to the ground thinking the boy would bend and pick it up, but he refused. It was then that Hannah committed suicide hoping to join her children in the World to Come.
There is also the heroic story of Judith. Judith inebriated the Syrian Greek leader Holofernes and then beheaded him which resulted in all of his followers to fleeing.
The stories of the five sons of Mattathias are well known, especially Judah Maccabbee, the leader, and Jonathan who eventually became the King. Although Mattathias' sons were Priests they took over the kingdom once the Syrian Greeks were chased out of the land. According to the Bible, kings of Israel were supposed to come from the line of Judah. Nevertheless, Mattathias who were Levis, took over the kingship.

William Lane Craig: Why do people laugh
Why do people laugh at William Lane Craig (Christian creationists)
William Lane Craig is a master of crowing over the essentially irrelevant robust nature of certain methodologies while simultaneously misapplying such methods to draw his desired and erroneous conclusions.
In academic circles, anyone who spends a disproportionate amount of their time exhausting the praises of the reliability of logical methods (as Craig does), reeks of being a bullshit merchant as its well known the whole methodology is subject to GIGO... Garbage in, Garbage out.
William Lane Craig has 'five pillars' by which he 'proves' Christianity. Here, in Why Do People Laugh at Creationists Part 37, William Lane Craig, I address merely the first of these 'pillars'. William Lane Craig claims that everything that begins to exist has a cause. Well if we didn't have a few hundred years of scientific discovery under our belt showing the universe does not mold itself around human intuitions, he might have a point: however that's just not the case! The smaller and higher in energy you get, the less intuition serves you satisfactorily. And whats the problem William Lane Craig wants to apply his 'intuition' and 'inductive reasoning' to? Oh yeah, the beginning of the universe, where all of the energy/ matter of the universe was in pretty much the smallest volume we can conceive. William Lane Craig seems to expect that even though we have no way of currently defining such a state (it's an unknown, a gap in knowledge), that his intuitive reasoning will serve him well. You don't need to know much about science to realize that's almost a pointless exercise. Apply intuition to quantum mechanics, and you will fail. Similarly with relativity.
These are of course the scientific objections to William Lane Craigs arguments. William Lane Craig is of course merely a layman when it comes to science. A point I only bring up as Craig persistently brings up such appeals to authority when suggesting his critics are not serious because they do not possess a degree in Philosophy.

Hamid from Pittsburgh - The Idiot Theist
This caller represents many levels of ignorance, but mainly he attempts to shift the burden of proof to Atheists. As usual Matt Dillahunty and Jen Peeples make that all important point that those who make claims have the burden of proof.
After an eternity of trying to explain this simple fact of logic, the caller then attempts to disprove Evolution. Just when you think this Theist can get no dumber, he surprises everyone and does just that. Matt's head almost explodes a few times during the call, and Jen just seems to be stunned by the sheer ignorance of this caller. Enjoy.

'Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why' is a book by Bart D. Ehrman, a New Testament scholar at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The book introduces lay readers to the field of textual criticism of the Bible. Ehrman discusses a number of textual variants that resulted from intentional or accidental manuscript changes during the scriptorium era. This book made it to the New York Times Best Seller list.
This Christmas gift this book or this video to your Christian friends.
Bart D. Ehrman , a former bible scholar is an agnostic now. May Allah guide him to Islam. Please make dua for him as he has given us this beautiful book refuting falsehood of Christianity and making things easy for us. Jesus: The Lost 40 Days
According to the Bible, Jesus came back from the dead and walked the earth for 40 days before ascending to heaven. But the New Testament reveals little about this defining miracle of the Christian faith. Using tools of history, technology, science and faith, HISTORY tells the little-known story. Long-buried non-Biblical sources, such as the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, the Secret Revelation of John and the writings of the Jewish historian Josephus yield astonishing information and detail about these seemingly lost 40 days.

Nuclear Reactors, Fantasy and fact!
Its a crazy thing that an awful lot of superheros are born from an radioactive disaster of some sort.
Dr Manhattan and the intrinsic field generator, Spiderman being bitten by a radioactive spider, and of course the Incredible Hulk and his gamma ray overdose.
In reality of course places where you can get exposed to such radiation have a LOT of safety features. Take for instance the reactor in this video, its got something like 5 failsafes. 5 rods can be dropped into the reactor, each of which will kill the criticality in milliseconds. They are held up by electromagnets, so if the power fails, they drop under gravity into the reactor. If somehow they don't drop under gravity, they can be pushed by compressed air.
Anyways, this is a little taster of what its like to work inside a nuclear reactor! :-)

8 Ways Christianity Is Not a Religion
Bill O'Reilly is right. I prove, eight times, that Christianity is not a religion, it's a philosophy.
Edward Current.
Edward Current.
Hidden Christianity
In Forged, Ehrman reveals: The Apostle Peter was illiterate, and therefore could not have written two letters (1 & 2 Peter) credited to him in the Bible. Six of the Pauline letters in the New Testament are forgeries. The First Book of Timothy, known to be a forgery, is still used today to oppress women, and provides the Scriptural basis for the Roman Catholic Church's refusal to ordain female priests.
Bart Ehrman interview - Hidden Christianity
Posing the provocative argument that parts of the Bible contain intentional deceptions, and that some of its texts were deliberately and painstakingly crafted to further the agendas of Christians living after the apostles, Forged will again turn upside down what we "know" about the Bible.

Christ is Back in Christmas!
Create a problem to sell a solution. That's Christianity - a simple con.
Christianity is based upon advocating the execution of an innocent man so that you can escape accountability. Is this a good message to celebrate and teach our children?
Accountability for what, you ask? It's the accountability for transgressions that mostly occur in the mind and are never actually acted upon. It is thought crime, of which everyone is "guilty". Christian mythology creates a "problem" which everyone has, and then invents a "cure" so that you have to join the cult. Joining the cult is the ONLY way to be "saved" from the problem Christianity invented in the first place. It's really quite clever, but not unique to Christianity. Creating a problem to sell a solution is an ages old tactic.
I was thinking of calling this video "The Passion of the Elf" but I didn't want it to be too predictable.

Bill Nye: Teaching Evolution? Think Thriller
Bill Nye says the best way to teach evolution is to "just let your passion come through." After all, it is a hard thing to find a kid who doesn't love dinosaurs. Another way to describe evolution is through the analogy of a flash mob. Some work out, some go away. Biology works the same way. The bad designs get eaten by the good ones and so all you have is good ones.

If you are a science teacher with a student whose parents insist that he or she not be exposed to biology, to evolution, I'm not sure what the rules are. I know you can—there's lawsuits pending in a couple of states. I get emails every week from the National Council for Science Education, the NCSE, addressing lawsuits about this issue.
But I guess just let your passion come through. It is a hard thing to find a kid who doesn't love dinosaurs. There's probably one, but I've never met him or her. So I would start there: the ancient dinosaurs are very much like modern birds, and there's reasons for that—one thing led to the other.
The other thing I just remind everybody about—to a lesser extent this guy Alfred Wallace but—Charles Darwin was disciplined. I mean, he did these extraordinary experiments, this series of experiments to discover, to understand the process of change from generation to generation, and this change is all around us. And the other just really hard thing for people who haven't taken time—and this will be a pun—to understand the amount of time involved. We live less than a century, a human does, but this process that brought us to be is billions of years old, and it's just really hard to get your mind around what that means—billion years, 65 million years.
And the other thing that's just out of our everyday experience as people. . . . We design things and make them. We decide how big the piece of paper is. We decide how large our handwriting is going to be. Then we make an organization chart for our corporation and then we hire people. And it's top-down, it's idea-down. But evolution doesn't work that way. Evolution is bottom-up. Evolution is, in the poetic sense, organic, and in the chemical sense, literally organic. All these systems emerge, all these living things emerge, and the good ones, the good designs, eat the bad designs, and so there's no more bad designs, there's just good designs. Then the designs compete and then they eat each other. And so you very quickly end up—people run computer models about this—you very quickly end up with an ecosystem in tuned species. It is out of our everyday experience. It is not top-down.
Although maybe—I will digress on this—maybe with the social networking that happens now, it is organic, it is bottom-up in another sense, that this self-organizing system's come into place. Let's all have a flash mob. Okay, there's no manager of flash mobbing, it just emerges. And if it's a stupid flash mob, nobody shows up, so then that one's eliminated. If it's big fun, like what's the one everybody likes? "Thriller," dancing to "Thriller," yeah. Two hundred people show up to pretend to be Michael Jackson. Okay, it's self-organizing is what I'm going for. And that's what evolution is. The bad designs get eaten by the good ones and so all you have is good ones. It happens very fast.

The Earth spins at night
22 days of data from the Suomi NPP satellite went into making this beautiful and eerie view of the Earth at night, spinning in a black sky. The satellite can see in the visible and near-infrared at high sensitivity, able to map city lights, fires, and even moonlit weather. This animation is made from real images, mapped onto the previously existing Blue Marble images to make the view more realistic.

Holiday Decorations, Christmas Displays and the Separation of Church and State
With Thanksgiving just behind us we know that Chanukah is soon upon us. Chanukah will begin this year on the 8th of December, next Saturday night. During this holiday season, many people get bent out of shape by holiday decorations, Christmas displays and the separation of church and state.
Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of NJOP, explains that he is in favor of a separation between church and state but he is not an absolutist on the subject. He believes that we should be more flexible and understanding of peoples' practices. As a boy, his father, who was born in Europe, used to take him and his sister to see the Christmas decorations, even though they were observant Jews. The entire family had a wonderful time. They didn't die. They didn't convert to other religions.
His American mother explained to them how in public school they would have the students sing Christmas Carols. This was obviously bringing religion into the schools. But, he reminds us again that we do not need to be so absolute. It's a nice opportunity to see how other people celebrate the holidays and be tolerant of their celebrations. We also need to feel strongly about our own holiday, Chanukah, and have our own strong Jewish identity. One way to achieve that is to respect others.

Don't Leave Atheists Out on Christmas
Atheist magician Penn Jillette questions Christian logic and the so-called War on Christmas: "Why leave me out? Why do that? What's your motive? And trying to turn around a 'we want to leave you out,' into 'why are you forcing us to not have our joy,' is insanity. It's backwards."

His main aim, as stated throughout his writings, is to spread an Islamic understanding that is rational, progressive, and humanistic, which in his eyes can only be gained through accepting the Qur'an as the only Divine authority. He is also a promoter of Theistic evolution, an understanding he gets from science and the Qur'an, instead of the Islamic belief in Creationism. Specifically, Yuksel is critical of Islamic creationists such as Adnan Oktar. Yuksel is a former member of United Submitters International.

The Christ That Stole Christmas
It's surprising for many to hear, but a lot of atheists love the holiday season. We simply celebrate without the nativity scenes and Christmas pageants.
In fact, the freethought community probably knows more about the supposed birthday of Jesus Christ than Christians do, and believers would be shocked at how many of their beloved traditions have been "stolen" from earlier cultures.
In this lighthearted show, we talk about the holidays and explore the (non-Christian) origins of so many beloved Christmas traditions.

Another Scientology Defector breaks their Silence
Raised as Scientologists, Christie King Collbran and her husband, Chris, were recruited as teenagers to work for the elite corps of staff members who keep the Church of Scientology running, known as the Sea Organization, or Sea Org.
They signed a contract for a billion years — in keeping with the churchs belief that Scientologists are immortal. They worked seven days a week, often on little sleep, for sporadic paychecks of $50 a week, at most.
But after 13 years and growing disillusionment, the Collbrans decided to leave the Sea Org, setting off on a Kafkaesque journey that they said required them (1) to sign false confessions about their personal lives and their work, (2) pay the church thousands of dollars it said they owed for courses and counseling, and (3) accept the consequences as their parents, siblings and friends who are church members cut off all communication with them.
