Did you gain any weight over Passover as others tend to? Well, the Jewish calendar has a built in solution to possible gains over the Festival. Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, Director of Jewish Treats' parent organization, the National Jewish Outreach Program, shares his unique take on this. He explains that starting the second night of Passover, we begin Counting the Omer. This are the 49 days from Passover to the next festival of Shavuot which celebrates the giving of the Torah (remember, we didn't simply get out of Egypt to be liberated, no, it was for the Children of Israel to accept the divine Torah.) But during this period, historically, in the time of Rabbi Akiva a plague broke out and 24,000 of his students died. Because of that, we mark the first 33 days of the Omer as a mourning period. We don't traditionally have weddings, get our haircut or shave, but by not having weddings, you don't have the smorgasbord of tempting food, and therefore you can lose a little weight. That is, as Rabbi Buchwald sees it, a divine solution to the Passover weight gain.
Another thought about the Counting of the Omer, is that when most people count something that they are anticipating they usually count down (examples: 22 more shopping days til... or at Cape Canaveral where Endeavour plans to launch now either on Sunday or Monday, a countdown of 10, 9, 8...) but we Jews count up. Why? We count up because we are optimistic. We look forward to that giving of the Torah which gives meaning to the whole celebration of Passover. We will not be depressed once the holiday is over because the holiday itself enriches us. Count the Omer and let's celebrate the giving of the Torah on Shavuot (this year held on June 8 & 9) together!

Christopher Hitchens' Letter to the American Atheist Convention - 4/22/2011
Dear fellow-unbelievers,
Nothing would have kept me from joining you except the loss of my voice (at least my speaking voice) which in turn is due to a long argument I am currently having with the specter of death. Nobody ever wins this argument, though there are some solid points to be made while the discussion goes on. I have found, as the enemy becomes more familiar, that all the special pleading for salvation, redemption and supernatural deliverance appears even more hollow and artificial to me than it did before. I hope to help defend and pass on the lessons of this for many years to come, but for now I have found my trust better placed in two things: the skill and principle of advanced medical science, and the comradeship of innumerable friends and family, all of them immune to the false consolations of religion. It is these forces among others which will speed the day when humanity emancipates itself from the mind-forged manacles of servility and superstition. It is our innate solidarity, and not some despotism of the sky, which is the source of our morality and our sense of decency.
That essential sense of decency is outraged every day. Our theocratic enemy is in plain view. Protean in form, it extends from the overt menace of nuclear-armed mullahs to the insidious campaigns to have stultifying pseudo-science taught in American schools. But in the past few years, there have been heartening signs of a genuine and spontaneous resistance to this sinister nonsense: a resistance which repudiates the right of bullies and tyrants to make the absurd claim that they have god on their side. To have had a small part in this resistance has been the greatest honor of my lifetime: the pattern and original of all dictatorship is the surrender of reason to absolutism and the abandonment of critical, objective inquiry. The cheap name for this lethal delusion is religion, and we must learn new ways of combating it in the public sphere, just as we have learned to free ourselves of it in private.
Our weapons are the ironic mind against the literal: the open mind against the credulous; the courageous pursuit of truth against the fearful and abject forces who would set limits to investigation (and who stupidly claim that we already have all the truth we need). Perhaps above all, we affirm life over the cults of death and human sacrifice and are afraid, not of inevitable death, but rather of a human life that is cramped and distorted by the pathetic need to offer mindless adulation, or the dismal belief that the laws of nature respond to wailings and incantations.
As the heirs of a secular revolution, American atheists have a special responsibility to defend and uphold the Constitution that patrols the boundary between Church and State. This, too, is an honor and a privilege. Believe me when I say that I am present with you, even if not corporeally (and only metaphorically in spirit...) Resolve to build up Mr Jefferson's wall of separation. And don't keep the faith.
Sincerely,
Christopher Hitchens

Does Christianity Have a Future?
According to some, Christianity in the UK has no future. Closure of churches and falling attendances in the last few decades appear to show that the Christian faith is in terminal decline.
Ann Widdecombe examines the evidence, and discovers at least three areas of Christian growth which are bucking the trend - immigration into the Catholic Church, the Alpha course and the Black Pentecostalist Churches.
But even if these do arrest the decline, what about the very long term? Can Christianity survive in a world in which the young seem even less interested in Christianity than their parents? And in such a world, how is it possible to justify an established Church of England and all its privileges?

If you're a skeptic fending off the constant barrage of attempts to convince, cajole and convert you to Christianity, perhaps this video will help you articulate your reasons for rejecting superstition and choosing the path of reason, science and common sense.

Angry mob torches Obama effigy in Koran burning protest
There have been more protests in Afghanistan against the burning of a Koran in the US. People took to the streets Sunday in the south and east of the country, while the Taliban has called on people to rise up, blaming government forces for any violence.
Many of the demonstrations have turned into deadly riots, with 20 already reported dead in the clashes. In southern Kandahar city on Sunday, hundreds took to the streets for the second day in a row, and hospital officials reported 20 people were hurt. On the same day, 20 were killed and dozens wounded in the city of Jalalabad.

My Family Thinks I'm Going To Hell
Every day, free-thinking men, women and youth are accosted by their own families because they've chosen a different path than the generations before them. Atheists/agnostics in religious homes struggle to balance love and respect of family with their own pledges to live rational, truthful lives.
Families divide. Voices are raised. Tears are shed. Ties are cut. Hearts are broken. And free-thinking men, women and youth are threatened with eternal damnation by their own flesh-and-blood families. How does an atheist/agnostic cope when his family believes he is going to Hell?

Just a few thoughts on a common argument used by creationists. You can't prove evolution "beyond a shadow of a doubt" and "If doubt exists, you haven't made your case". This shows a fundamental lack of understanding of what science is.
Science is based on inductive models of utility, especially predictive utility. Thunderf00t has said this dozens of times, but apparently it's not reaching the target audience.

The New Atheism - Victor Stenger radio interview
In recent years a number of bestselling books have forcefully argued that belief in God can no longer be defended on rational or empirical grounds, and that the scientific worldview has rendered obsolete the traditional beliefs held by Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The authors of these books-Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and Victor J. Stenger-have come to be known as the "New Atheists." Predictably, their works have been controversial and attracted a good deal of critical reaction.
The New Atheism - Victor Stenger (I)
In this new book, Victor J. Stenger, whose God: The Failed Hypothesis was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007, reviews and expands upon the principles of New Atheism and answers many of its critics. He demonstrates in detail that naturalism-the view that all of reality is reducible to matter and nothing else-is sufficient to explain everything we observe in the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the inner workings of the brain that result in the phenomenon of mind.
The New Atheism - Victor Stenger (II)
Victor Stenger disputes the claim of many critics that the question of whether God exists is beyond the ken of science. On the contrary, he argues that absence of evidence for God is, indeed, evidence of absence when the evidence should be there and is not.
The New Atheism - Victor Stenger (III)
Turning from scientific to historical evidence, Stenger then points out the many examples of evil perpetrated in the name of religion. He also notes that the Bible, which is still taken to be divine revelation by millions, fails as a basis for morality and is unable to account for the problem of unnecessary suffering throughout the world.
Finally, he discusses the teachings of ancient nontheist sages such as Buddha, Lao Tzu,and Confucius, whose guidelines for coping with the problems of life and death did not depend upon a supernatural metaphysics. Stenger argues that this "way of nature" is far superior to the traditional supernatural monotheisms, which history shows can lead to a host of evils.
The New Atheism is a well-argued defense of the atheist position and a strong rebuttal of its critics.

"The Best Seder in the USA" Lyrics
Woke up in bed at the corner of Lex
With a dream of how it used to be.
Remembering the time of the Exodus...Oy
And how the Jews were set free.
Jumped in the cab
Throwin' a Seder for the first time
Look to the right and I see the Manischewitz sign
I'm hostin' my first Seder
So please don't be a hater
My tummy's turnin' hope my Seder is amazing
So much pressure that I'm shvitzing
That's when the Matzah man turned on the radio
And the Dayenu song was on
And the Dayenu song was on
And the Dayenu song was on
CHORUS:
So I put my Yarmulke on
They're playin' my song
And the butterflies fly away
Cleanin it up like yeah!
Grindin it up like yeah!
Filled the wine up
In Elijah's cup
I know its gonna be ok
Yeah, the best Seder in the USA
Yeah, the best Seder in the USA
Get to my house in the taxi cab
Everybody's lookin' at me now
Like "who's that yid, that's rockin' Tsitsis
He's gotta be from out of town"
So hard with chametz not around me
Its definitely not an Easter Party
Cause all I see are hagadot
Good thing I got the memo
My tummys turnin' hope my Seder is amazing
So much pressure that I'm shvitzing
This mornin' JM in the AM dropped my favorite tune
And the Chad Gadya song was on
And the Chad Gadya song was on
And the Chad Gadya song was on
CHORUS:
So I got my Yarmulke on
They're playin' my song
And the butterflies fly away
Breakin' it up like yeah
Lean to the left like yeah
Filled the wine up
In Elijah's cup
I know its gonna be ok
Yeah, the best Seder in the USA
Yeah, the best Seder in the USA
BRIDGE:
Feel my soul has taken flight
Back to my homeland tonight
Seders get me everytime
My bubbe gives a nod cause I did alright
CHORUS:
So I got my Yarmulke on
They're playin' my song
And the butterflies fly away
Hidin' it up like yeah
Findin' it up like yeah
Filled the wine up

I know its gonna be ok

1 Corinthians 13 (Bible)
The point of the video - the bible is as good a source of information on the topic of LOVE, as any ancient desert scribblings. Sure, taken on its own, 1 Cor 13:4-7 is very nice, but not as nice as other descriptions of love that human beings have come up with. And anyway - would you take advice about love from someone whose biography revealed them to be an appallingly UNLOVING character in the first place?
The bible demolishes itself as a useful source for anything, other than an anthropological study in the history of metaphysical wonderings, superstition, ignorance, and delusion. When you read the words on the pages of the bible, what you actually see is horror, fear, violence, anger, rage, jealousy (fuck it, I think jealousy is a pretty low emotion/characteristic), pettiness, death, fear, - the very worst of human nature.

Why the Jewish People Should Care about the Events in Japan
Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of our parent organization, the National Jewish Outreach Program, tells us why the Jews should help Japan and any other country in need. Even though the Jews tend to be an ethnocentric people, we should do more than care, we should reach out to them.
The Talmud tells a story of a man who starts drilling a hole under his seat on a boat. The other passengers started screaming. He said, its my seat, I can do what I want. And they said, but its going to affect us all. We can learn from this, that what happens in Japan will affect us all.
The Bible also tells us we must be concerned with all humanity. We learn this in the story of Jonah. Jonah was sent to Nineveh, a non-Jewish city, to tell the people there to repent. He was reluctant to do it so he tried to hide by getting on a boat. He was thrown overboard and swallowed by a big fish. When he was spit out, God again told him to go to Nineveh and to prophecize as he was told to before. And the people listened and repented. When Jonah came out he slept and a gourd protected him from the sun. And then suddenly the gourd disappeared and Jonah was upset that that his protection was gone. God said to him, you're worried about the gourd, but you weren't worried about humanity?
We must all be concerned for humanity. Not only because the radiation or lack of car parts coming from Japan will affect our lives, but because its humanity. We have to care for all of God's children.

Herman Cain refuses to appoint a Muslim in his administration
Earlier this week, Herman Cain gave an interview to Christianity Today in which he declared that, “based upon the little knowledge that I have of the Muslim religion, you know, they have an objective to convert all infidels or kill them.”
Question: Would you be comfortable appointing a Muslim, either in your cabinet or as a federal judge?
Herman Cain: No, I will not. And here’s why. There is this creeping attempt, there is this attempt to gradually ease Sharia law and the Muslim faith into our government. It does not belong in our government. This is what happened in Europe. And little by little, to try and be politically correct, they made this little change, they made this little change.
