Danish daily appologises for Muhammad cartoons

A Danish newspaper's - Politiken - apologised for offending Muslims over its printing of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad five years ago. It sparked fierce protest in the Muslim world and intense debate about freedom of speech.

Politiken (the newspaper) says its apology was part of a settlement with a Saudi lawyer representing eight Muslim groups in the Middle East and Australia.

Video by Russia Today aired February 26, 2010

Statement published by Politiken
As part of Politiken's news coverage of Mr Kurt Westergaard's cartoon drawing of the Prophet Mohammed ("the Cartoon Drawing"), first published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in September 2005, Politiken reprinted the Cartoon Drawing.

Politiken has never intended to reprint the Cartoon Drawing as a statement of editorial opinion or values but merely as part of the newspaper's news coverage.

It was never Politiken's intention to offend Muslims in Denmark or elsewhere with the reprinting of the Cartoon Drawing.

However, Politiken recognizes and deplores that our reprinting of the Cartoon Drawing of the Prophet Mohammed has offended Muslims in Denmark and in other countries around the world.

We apologize to anyone who was offended by our decision to reprint the Cartoon Drawing.

Halal meat controversy in France - Quick fast-food restaurant chain

Halal meat, or meat slaughtered in line with Muslim tradition, is at the centre of a political controversy.

Quick - a fast-food French restaurant chain - is testing out a new niche market, withdrawing all pork products from the menu and serving only halal meat in some of its branches.

Experts say that with more than 5 million French Muslims who are potential customers, Quick is targeting a booming market: the $7.5bn halal business.

But the mayor of Roubaix, a French town near the northern city of Lille , has launched a law suit against the food chain, arguing that it constituted "discrimination" against non-Muslims.

And Marine Le Pen, the vice-president of the far-right National Front party, has warned of "Islamisation".

Iranian scientists clone goat

Iranian scientists have cloned a goat and plan future experiments they hope will lead to a treatment for stroke patients.

The female goat, named Hana, was born early on Wednesday in the city of Isfahan in central Iran.

"With the birth of Hana, Iran is among five countries in the world cloning a baby goat," said Isfahani, an embryologist. Mohammed Hossein Nasr e-Isfahani, head of the Royan Research Institute, said.

He said his institute's main aim in cloning the goat is to produce medicine to be used to treat people who have had strokes.

In 2006 Iran became the first country in the Middle East to announce it had cloned a sheep.

The effort is part of Iran's quest to become a regional powerhouse in advanced science and technology by 2025. In particular, Iran is striving for achievements in medicine and in aerospace and nuclear technology.

Think before you act!

Out of Context!

Here are a few kernels of truth, wrapped liberally in extreme exaggeration. I know. It's pretty over the top. But so is the assertion that the bible is a holy book. That's a massive exaggeration. Most of it isn't even "pleasant".

The bible is revolting. It is sickening. It is nowhere NEAR as nice a book as what an ethical human could come up with, so why on earth does it have this reputation as having been written by the very author of love itself? It wasn't. It was written by human men - and pretty horrible men by the sounds of things.

And why is it that it only ever seems to be the ugly bits of the bible that are ever taken out of context? Why don't we ever hear christians complaining of John 3:16 being taken out of context?

Look, I know it's possible for things to be taken out of context. Creationists do it all the time, and it bugs the hell out of scientists and rationalists. Even I've been quoted out of context. Sure, it's annoying. But no context is large enough to write off some of the horrors of the bible. I mean - is September 11, for example, completely justified by recourse to a larger "context"? No, and neither are some of the horrors mentioned in the video.

I had a conversation recently (on youtube) and we talked about stoning. It occurred to me, that as an atheist, I will never, ever be called upon to defend the appalling practice of stoning. However, a christian who believes that their heavenly father mandated stoning, does have some kind of obligation to EXCUSE those who practiced stoning, and to even implicitly, DEFEND the practice, seeing, as it was, Yahweh's favored punishment.

THIS is what's wrong with christianity. And yes, I know that there is more to it than that. But how warped are your morals, compared to those of an atheist, if the atheist can outright condemn practices such as stoning and burning alive, but you can't, due to your apparent deep personal relationship with the supreme moral law giver of the universe? You know, that supreme moral law giver who said burning people alive was OK? Something is seriously wrong there.

Or, come out and say that the old testament laws were absolutely hideous! Come and join the rest of us. It's far clearer over here. No double-think. Come and live an ethical life based on what you TRULY believe about how best to live among others.

The Bible for beginners (Part 3)

About 1/3rd of the people on this planet call themselves Christians, although peculiarly only about 1 in 10 have ever read the Bible. Personally I think this number is hopelessly optimistic with maybe only 1in 100 to 1000 having ever really read the Bible. Yup so about 90 % of Christians believe in something they've never read about. In order to partially remedy this, I'm starting a new series called 'The Bible for Beginners' where I will read highlights from the Bible to see if Christians actually subscribe to the Holy book they have never read, or not.

In this episode we look at the central character in Christianity, the figure of Jesus Christ. He mostly crops up in two places in the Bible, in the Gospels and in the Revelation of JC. However when he does turn up in Revelation he is not exactly wearing his 'Prince of Peace' hat... indeed he threatens to make some woman sick, then to kill her children (yup, Jesus Christ, child killer, Revelation 2:23... way to stay classy!). Not content with just threatening to make people sick and to kill their children JC then goes on to say he will give his minions a rod of iron to smash up everyone else. If this character were in any other book, he would fall squarely into the clinically psychotic category!

This is then compared to JC in the Gospels (Luke 19:26), where he commands everyone who disagrees with him to be bought before him and killed. He then goes on to instruct his disciples to go and steal a horse for him. Nice role model!

The Bible for beginners

There are some 30 000 denominations of Christians, and hence of course when someone claims to be a Biblical scholar you must ask them which of the mutually exclusive denominational interpretations they are a scholar in.

However the idea behind the Bible for Beginners is to tackle broad subjects that are applicable to all Christians (e.g believing in Christ, God etc).

In this episode we take a look at Heaven, the place where most Christians believe they will go when they die. Its actually described in the bible in Revelations, and it's a jolly weird place too is the heaven described in the Bible!
