Christmas unWrapped- The History of Christmas
People all over the world celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25th. But why is the Nativity marked by gift giving, and was He really born on that day? And just where did the Christmas tree come from? Take an enchanting tour through the history of this beloved holiday and trace the origins of its enduring traditions. Journey back to the earliest celebrations when the infant religion embraced pagan solstice festivals like the Roman Saturnalia and turned them into a commemoration of Jesus' birth. Learn how Prince Albert introduced the Christmas tree to the English-speaking world in 1841, and discover how British settlers in the New World transformed the patron saint of children into jolly old St. Nick.
This documentary explores the origin of Christmas and how it came to be the way we know it today. The documentary also incites the thought as to how Christmas is on one hand a result of social, cultural, and political influences (hence somewhat obscuring the apparent purpose of the festival: Christ's Mass), and on the other hand a influence over people's lives (particularly consumerism).

We Are Descendants of Human Beings, Jews Brothers of Apes and Pigs
Transcript:
Abd Al-Majid Al-Zindani: Against the backdrop of this campaign, Darwin's evolutionists began to rely on illusions, which they present as evidence. They said: "Look! Your body has vestigial organs that you inherited from your ancestors, the apes." God help us! Our ancestors were not apes. Their ancestors may have been apes, but ours were human beings.
[...]
[The Darwinists] say: "Look at this creature. We found it in a lower stratum, and we found this more developed [creature] in a higher stratum." Okay, let's say people come after us, and find archeological remains of a handcart. Then they find bicycle in the stratum above it. Then, in the stratum above that, they find a motorbike, and in the stratum above that, they find a car. "Aha! We have discovered how the car developed and where it came from. The car used to be a handcart. Then there were natural developments and bla bla... and it turned into a bicycle, and there were other conditions, and it turned into a motorbike and from a motorbike, it turned into a car. Look how it developed." Can anybody accept such logic? If there was really such a sequence, it proves that this creature came after that one, but not that it developed from it. There is a difference between the two.
[...]
We must not rule out the possibility that Darwin had hidden psychological feelings. Darwin was reviled just like the Jews, who are told: "You are the brothers of apes and pigs." Allah transformed the Israelites who rebelled against him into apes and pigs, and it has become a curse used against them. Perhaps Darwin was upset and wanted to say to people: "You are all apes and pigs. It's not just us." Therefore, we can see that this theory is not based on sound foundations, and does not have sufficient proof. So today, it is considered to be a theory which used to be prevalent, but which lost many of its supporters, who renounced it, and which has become like a past legend.
[...]
What remains for us to say is that the principle in which they believe is the principle of coincidence. The whole business happened by coincidence. If you said that a book could be created by coincidence, nobody on the face of the earth would accept it. Moreover, an Islamic scholar said: "If we took a million apes with a million typewriters, and these million apes were to type for a million years would a poem by [Egyptian poet] Ahmed Shawqi accidentally be created?" What is this? This is something that science, reason, and truth cannot accept.

Richard Dawkins: Open Your Eyes
After sleeping through a hundred million centuries we have finally opened our eyes on a sumptuous planet, sparkling with colour, bountiful with life. Within decades we must close our eyes again. Isn't it a noble, an enlightened way of spending our brief time in the sun, to work at understanding the universe and how we have come to wake up in it? This is how I answer when I am asked -- as I am surprisingly often -- why I bother to get up in the mornings. To put it the other way round, isn't it sad to go to your grave without ever wondering why you were born? Who, with such a thought, would not spring from bed, eager to resume discovering the world and rejoicing to be a part of it?
"There is an anaesthetic of familiarity, a sedative of ordinariness which dulls the senses and hides the wonder of existence. For those of us not gifted in poetry, it is at least worth while from time to time making an effort to shake off the anaesthetic. What is the best way of countering the sluggish habitutation brought about by our gradual crawl from babyhood? We can't actually fly to another planet. But we can recapture that sense of having just tumbled out to life on a new world by looking at our own world in unfamiliar ways."
— Richard Dawkins (Unweaving the Rainbow: Science, Delusion and the Appetite for Wonder)
"More poignant for us, at Laetoli in Tanzania are the companionable footprints of three real hominids, probably Australopithecus afarensis, walking together 3.6 million years ago in what was then fresh volcanic ash. Who does not wonder what these individuals were to each other, whether they held hands or even talked, and what forgotten errand they shared in a Pliocene dawn?"

Dual Holiday Displays Coexist in Raleigh's Moore Square
RALEIGH For the past several years, a Nativity scene has gone up in downtown Raleighs Moore Square during the holiday season depicting the birth of Jesus Christ.
But this year it has company. The Triangle Freethought Society, which is made up of atheists, non-theists and free thinkers, unveiled a winter solstice display marking the shortest and darkest day of the year, which lands on Dec. 21. Winter solstice typically marks the middle of winter with celebrations by ancient cultures around the world.
We felt it was important to have a counterbalance to that display this year, so we put a winter solstice display together, said Mark Zumbach, president of the Triangle Freethought Society. Our goal is to point out there are multiple reasons for celebrating the season.

Great Issues Forum: What Is Religion?
Summary
The Forum's year-long exploration of religion launches with a program featuring distinguished philosopher and cognitive scientist Daniel Dennett and noted evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson.
They are joined by additional participants to discuss questions such as: What is the nature and purpose of religion? Is it a product of our evolution and something we can now do without? Is it a system of belief and practice that humans require in order to build communities and construct meaning for their lives? What in human make-up renders religion possible? How has religious belief developed and changed over the years, and how does it continue to do so?
Daniel Dennett, John F. Haught, William P. Kelly

Jesus killed Santa
One Nipomo man's holiday decorations has his neighbors banding together to get it removed.
The display is of Jesus and Santa, the two icons of Christmas. However, Jesus is holding a shotgun over the dead body of Santa Claus (father Christmas).
Neighbors want the display taken down citing that there are children in the neighborhood and they find it disturbing. "I know its freedom of speech, but it's pretty disturbing and there are lots of children, that's our main concern," says neighbor Susana Cruz.
The artist, Ron Lake says that it represents the commercialism of Christmas.
Lake also says that his display it is a work of art and open to interpretation. "You can tell your kids and make it as if there's a Santa Claus, and let them believe all that, but you can't explain these things or ignore this thing. I don't get it," says Lake.

How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth?
In a Horizon special, naturalist David Attenborough investigates whether the world is heading for a population crisis.
In his lengthy career, David has watched the human population more than double from 2.5 billion in 1950 to nearly seven billion. He reflects on the profound effects of this rapid growth, both on humans and the environment.
1/6
2/6
While much of the projected growth in human population is likely to come from the developing world, it is the lifestyle enjoyed by many in the West that has the most impact on the planet. Some experts claim that in the UK consumers use as much as two and a half times their fair share of Earth's resources.
Sir David examines whether it is the duty of individuals to commit not only to smaller families, but to change the way they live for the sake of humanity and planet Earth.

In his lengthy career, David has watched the human population more than double from 2.5 billion in 1950 to nearly seven billion. He reflects on the profound effects of this rapid growth, both on humans and the environment.

Evolution: How We Know it Happened & Why it Matters
THE HOTTEST CULTURAL CONTROVERSY OF 2005 was the Intelligent Design challenge to the theory of evolution, being played out in classrooms and courtrooms across America.
The crux of the argument made by proponents of Intelligent Design is that the theory of evolution is in serious trouble. They claim that the evidence for evolution is weak, the gaps in the theory are huge, and that these flaws should be taught to students. In this brilliant synthesis of scientific data and theory, Occidental College geologist, paleontologist, and evolutionary theorist Dr. Donald Prothero will present the best evidence we have that evolution happened, why Darwins theory still matters, and what the real controversies are in evolutionary biology

Canadian bishop charged with child pornography
Authorities say a Roman Catholic Bishop who oversaw his diocese's settlement with victims of sex abuse is facing child pornography charges.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Brigdit Leger confimer the charges against Bishop Raymond Lahey on Wednesday.
The accusations stem from the bishop's arrest following a random search of his laptop computer at Ottawa's airport earlier this month.
Lahey didn't mention the arrest when he resigned as bishop of the diocese of Antigonish in Canada's province of Nova Scotia this past weekend. Lahey said he was leaving for personal reasons.
Lahey recently oversaw a $15-million Canadian (US$14 million) settlement with people who said they had been sexually abused by priests dating back to 1950.
