Barry Lynn has been the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State for 20 years. He is both an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and an attorney admitted to the United States Supreme Court bar. Barry Lynn also worked at the national office of the American Civil Liberties.

Earlier in his career he worked to end the military draft, secure amnesty for Vietnam war resisters and improve conditions for Vietnam veterans. Barry Lynn has won numerous awards from both religious and humanist organizations and is likely to remain the only person in history to have been given both a Hugh Hefner First Amendment Award and a Freedom of Worship Medal from the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute. Barry Lynn firmly believes that the union of religion and government ruins both.
