Katherine Ozment - Finding Grace Without God in a Secular Age
In her book, Grace Without God: The Search for Meaning, Purpose, and Belonging in a Secular Age, author Katherine Ozment offers both a personal and critical exploration of the many ways nonreligious Americans create their own traditions and communities after religion. Ozment visited diverse congregations, from an “atheist church” to a storytelling gathering to a nature-based coming-of-age ceremony.
Katherine Ozment turned to science and the humanities, seeking guidance from noted scholars in a wide range of disciplines. Katherine Ozment interviewed community leaders and parents, and searched for meaning on mountaintops and in her own front yard. In her book she shares how her family has found purpose and connection without the organizing principle of religion, and she will present these findings in her talk, along with a group discussion.

Atheist Chaplain: How Secularism Deals With The Dying
How can one be an atheist and a chaplain? 90% of the time Wes Fornes is with patients and their families when death is knocking at the door, where he will call upon the divine in prayer. And then what does he say when the family asks, “Will I see Aunt Betsy in Heaven?”
In this talk, Wes will highlight the metaphysics of the Atheist Hospice Chaplain who stands alongside the most fervent of religious during times of trauma. When talk of heaven, a spirit world, and a rosary are at the core of someone’s reality, how does an atheist chaplain bridge the gap?
Wes Fornes has a B.A. in Biblical Studies and Philosophy from Dallas Baptist University, a Masters of Philosophical Theology from Criswell College and a Masters of Philosophy from [Green College] Oxford University. In the span of twelve years, he pastored in three evangelical churches, two of which were mega churches. Of the three churches, the first was a Southern Baptist church in Dallas TX, the second a young and hip Baptist church in Chesapeake VA, and the 3rd was a Pentecostal church in Charlottesville VA. His deconversion took place in 2010, but he remained a closet Atheist for one year while in the church.
Wes' current position is Psychosocial Director at a hospice company covering Gilroy to Pacifica. He leads the team of chaplains and social workers whose goal it is to provide spiritual and emotional support to the dying and their families.

Living the Secular Life: New Answers to Old Questions
OVER THE LAST 25 YEARS, “no religion” has become the fastest-growing religion in America. Around the world, hundreds of millions of people have turned away from the traditional faiths of the past and embraced a moral yet nonreligious—or secular—life, generating societies vastly less religious than at any other time in human history. Drawing on innovative sociological research, Dr. Zuckerman—a Pitzer College professor who founded a Department of Secular Studies, the first of its kind—illuminates this demographic shift with the moral convictions that govern secular individuals, offering crucial information for the religious and nonreligious alike.
Living the Secular Life reveals that, despite opinions to the contrary, nonreligious Americans possess a unique moral code that allows them to effectively navigate the complexities of modern life. Zuckerman discovered that despite the entrenched negative beliefs about nonreligious people, American secular culture is grounded in deep morality and proactive citizenship—indeed, some of the very best that the country has to offer.

Michael Shermer Discussing The Moral Arc
In Dr. Michael Shermer’s latest book, The Moral Arc: How Science and Reason Lead Humanity toward Truth, Justice, and Freedom, he claims that we are living in the most moral period of our species’ history.
It is a book about moral progress that demonstrates through extensive data and heroic stories that the arc of the moral universe bends toward truth, justice, and freedom. Of the many factors that have come together over the centuries to bend the arc in a more moral direction, science and reason are foremost.
The Scientific Revolution led by Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton was so world-changing that thinkers in other fields consciously aimed at revolutionizing the social, political, and economic worlds using the same methods of science. This led to the Age of Reason and the Enlightenment, which in turn created the modern secular world of liberal democracies, civil rights and civil liberties, equal justice under the law, open political and economic borders, and the expansion of the moral sphere to include more people—and now even animals—as worthy of moral consideration. Epic in scope, The Moral Arc is the Cosmos of human history.
