Twenty-five percent of the residents of Rio de Janeiro live in informal communities called favelas. Not fully slums but not fully integrated into the city either, these favelas are home to both horrific gang violence and some of the most creative and resourceful people in Rio.

Katherine Ozment - Finding Grace Without God in a Secular Age

In her book, Grace Without God: The Search for Meaning, Purpose, and Belonging in a Secular Age, author Katherine Ozment offers both a personal and critical exploration of the many ways nonreligious Americans create their own traditions and communities after religion. Ozment visited diverse congregations, from an “atheist church” to a storytelling gathering to a nature-based coming-of-age ceremony.

Katherine Ozment turned to science and the humanities, seeking guidance from noted scholars in a wide range of disciplines. Katherine Ozment interviewed community leaders and parents, and searched for meaning on mountaintops and in her own front yard. In her book she shares how her family has found purpose and connection without the organizing principle of religion, and she will present these findings in her talk, along with a group discussion.

"Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief," which includes interviews with several former church members, is being criticized by the Church of Scientology as "one-sided" and "dishonest." The film's director Alex Gibney and Lawrence Wright, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author whose book the film is based on, join "CBS This Morning" to discuss the documentary.
