Even before its structure was known, ozone was, and still is to this day, used as a water and air steriliser, as well as a surface disinfectant. It has also been used in the past as a way of disinfecting wounds, but as technology has advanced, coupled with the fact that ozone is quite toxic, it fell out of favour.

Now, like so many redundant medical practices, it has been adopted by the alternative medicine crowd where its proponents are promoting it as a panacea that has the ability to cure, among other things, cancer, AIDS, and multiple sclerosis.

From the Big Bang theory to quantum mechanics, Neil deGrasse Tyson’s new book, "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry", aims to bring “the universe down to Earth succinctly ... in digestible chapters consumable anytime and anywhere”. But can such a book improve scientific literacy at a time when some people in the United States wonder if there’s a “war on science”?



From climate change skeptics to the Trump administration’s proposed budget cuts to scientific research, scientific inquiry and advancement in the US are under pressure. This so-called “war” has inspired a new wave of activism, with marches organised across the country to combat “alternative facts” with scientific facts.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, who is the director of New York City’s Hayden Planetarium, says science is “a fundamental part” of the US’ industrious reputation, but Americans have “lost the ability to judge what is true and what is not”. Although Pew Research Center surveys note at least three-quarters of Americans trust scientists to act in the public’s interest, partisan politics often inform opinions about such matters as climate change, energy policy, and whether evolution should be taught in public schools.

According to Neil deGrasse Tyson, the denial of scientific truths stunts conversations about problems that should have been solved “years ago”. He adds that science should be “in the service of civilization” and the sooner Americans recognize that, “the faster we can get on with the political conversations about how to solve the problems that face us”.

On August 21, 2017, the long-anticipated total solar eclipse will darken the skies from Oregon to South Carolina as the Moon passes between the Earth and Sun. The last time the contiguous United States saw a total solar eclipse was in 1979, and the next one won’t be until 2024.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: Dark Matter, Dark Gravity, Ghost Particles, & the Essence of All Objects

There's something fundamental we all need to understand about dark matter—it may not actually be matter at all. Neil deGrasse Tyson has a bone to pick with this misnomer that is distracting physicists and the public from the real discoveries to be made.

Scientists know very little about "dark matter", and in fact it can only be observed indirectly by its effect on other objects. Tyson has a few suggestions for its re-naming: how about "Fred", he jokes, which is a name devoid of any implied meaning—suitable for our current level of knowledge. But if you want it to sound sexy and be accurate, then the way to go is dark gravity, according to Tyson.



Why? Because when you add up everything in the universe—the stars, moons, gas clouds, black holes, everything—85% of gravity is unaccounted for. That is so-called "dark matter". What makes it so interesting isn't the wild-goose-chase question of whether or not it exists, but why it doesn't interact with ordinary, known matter? On the way to explaining that dark matter "doesn't give a rats ass about us," Tyson explores ghost particles, the essence of objects, and why we haven't found any dark matter planets.
