The Truth About Viral Charlie Charlie Challenge

"You - or your wayward demonic teens - might have summoned up a malignant Mexican spirit with a couple of pencils. But, thankfully, all is probably well — here's what's really going on in the Charlie Charlie Challenge.

What’s the Charlie Charlie Challenge and where did it come from?

The Charlie Charlie Challenge — or variants of it, known as the pencil game or Charlie pencil — has been around for some time. It’s claimed that the game is an old Mexican tradition, but there’s no trace of that on the internet, but it seems to have been around for years before it took off this week.

To play the game, grab a sheet of paper and draw two lines on it to make a cross. Put a “yes” in the top right and bottom left hand corner, and a “no” in the remaining two.”

Does Finding a Fossil Change the Mind of a Creationist?

Edgar Nernberg found fish fossils at a construction site that date back 60 million years old. However, Nernberg is a creationist and believes the world is only 6000 years old. Does this change his mind? Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick?), Karomo Brown, and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

"An Alberta man who discovered a school of rare fossilized fish while digging up a Calgary basement believes the world was created by God a few thousand years ago.

It's for that reason Edgar Nernberg doesn't think the fossils could possibly be as old as paleontologists are estimating.

"I subscribe to the creationist position, and I believe they were laid down in Noah's flood, about 4,500 years ago. But we agree to disagree."

He's referring to Darla Zelenitsky, the University of Calgary paleontologist who was brought in to examine the five ancient fish.

She says they likely swam in waters about 60 million years ago, which is the age of the Paskapoo Formation, a sheet of rock that lies under the city."

Philip Pullman on 'The Cuckoo's Nest'

The Contract: A Chick Tract

Hugo and Jake read about a deal with the Devil that isn't really bad at all. Actually, it's kind of awesome.

That Story Sounds Familiar...

I want to tell you about a myth.

It involves some Gods.

Who create a man.

Who lives in the wild.

Who's naked.

A woman tempts him. He falls for it.

Bad things happen, but he gains knowledge.

Later, the Gods decide to create a worldwide flood to drown everybody. Because they're all sinful.

But they decide to save one man who's righteous.

They order him to build an ark. He could bring on board some humans and a sampling of animals.

The flood comes and submerges everything.

All the other people are killed off.

The Ark lands on a mountain in the Middle East.

You get the idea.

All of that, by the way, is from the Epic of Gilgamesh, written in approximately 2100 BC.

Some people say it influenced the Hebrew Bible.

Some say the Bible influenced Gilgamesh... which makes no sense.

And others say they were both telling stories from a common source before their time.

Either way, the point is that these stories have been around for a long time.

Adam & Eve and Noah's Flood? They're not real. And they sure as hell aren't original.

So if Moses wrote the Book of Genesis, then he was just plagiarizing from cultures that were around long before him.

That applies to pretty much all the Bible stories -- virgin births, performing miracles, a human son of God, resurrecting from the dead -- you can find these stories being told long before Jesus came onto the scene.

The only surprising thing is that people still say the Bible is literally true. Even Christians who dismiss Creationists think the Jesus story is legit. It's not.

But, you know, it's not like pastors ever tell those other stories during church.

Or they just blame Satan for trying to confuse us, I guess.

Sharia Law Comes to Walmart, according to Allen West

"Fox News contributor Allen West went to Walmart and thought he was the victim of "Sharia law" because a checkout clerk under the age of 21 couldn't sell him alcohol.

West, a former congressman and head of the think tank National Center for Policy Analysis, wrote a May 11 post originally headlined, "Sharia law comes to Walmart?" He recounted a weekend trip to Walmart, where a "Muslim employee" manning the cash register was unable to sell him alcohol. (West knew he was Muslim because, "being the inquisitive fella I am, I used my additional set of eyes -- glasses -- to see the young checkout man's name. Let me just say it was NOT 'Steve.'")"*

Rush Limbaugh Blames Gay Marriage for Decline of Religion

Radio host Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday explained that Christianity was facing a sharp decline in the United States because Americans were leaving churches that had not “fallen prey to the dark side” and embraced same-sex marriage.

A recent Pew Research Center survey showed that the number of Americans identifying as Christians had dropped by 8 points in the last seven years. At the same time, Americans who were not affiliated with a religion rose from 16 percent to 23 percent.

On his Tuesday radio show, Limbaugh explained that the drop in self-identifying Christians could be explained by “homosexual marriage.”

Limbaugh noted that many churches already performed same-sex weddings and ordained gay clergy.

“And in some cases female and lesbian ministers, which you might think in some cases could cause people to leave those churches,” he opined. “Those denominations — the Methodists, the Presbyterians, the Lutherans — dropped a lot of members.”

Rush Limbaugh has a unique reason why he thinks the country is headed down the drain because religion is on the decline.

Yoga Miracle For Christian Man So His Church Does The Unthinkable

"If yoga helps a Christian man to walk for the first time in thirty-three years, does his newfound strength come from God or the Devil? That is the question tearing apart an Evangelical church in Las Vegas.

In the New Testament gospel of Mark, Jesus tells a paralytic man to take up his bed and walk, and he does. In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter calls on the name of Jesus and does the same for a man who has been lame since birth:

Peter said, “I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk.” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. Jumping up, he stood and began to walk, and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. (Acts 3:6-8NRSV)

So, when John Taylor prayed earnestly that a similar miracle might befall his fellow church member, Mike Persi, he prayed in faith, believing, and then waited. Mike had been wheelchair bound for over three decades, ever since an accident at age 27 left him unable to walk or to speak without stuttering."

9 Things You Should Know About Jehovah's Witnesses

A lot of people I know think of Jehovah's Witnesses as the people who sometimes knock on your door to talk to you about God.

That's all they know about the Jehovah's Witnesses. So let's fix that right now.

1) They don't accept blood transfusions.

Imagine you're in a car accident and you're taken to the hospital. They need to give you blood. Devout Witnesses won't accept it.

2) If you commit what the church views as a serious sin, and you're deemed unrepentant by a committee of elders, you will be disfellowshipped.

Not just kicked out of the church... but disfellowshipped. Which means no one in the church can ever speak with you again.

3) They believe the world's ending soon and only they will be saved.

4) They don't celebrate birthdays.

Why? For one, they believe your death day is way more important than your birthday, so who cares.

5) They don't celebrate other Holidays.

6) They are currently governed by seven dudes.

The Governing Body formulates doctrine for all Witnesses everywhere.

Women aren't allowed.

They don't have any special qualifications despite being able to set policy for millions of followers.

And they're appointed for life.

7) Jehovah's Witnesses are discouraged from getting higher education

Preaching is supposed to be your true calling. College would just get in the way of that. So while you might get away with learning a trade, Church Elders actively discourage you from going to a university.

They don't want you to be part of a secular world and they know how tempting it can be when you're surrounded by people who don't feel like God's watching over them at all times.

More importantly, a lot of people who go to college are taught to think critically and examine their beliefs. They take science classes and philosophy classes. And some of them eventually shed their faith.

That's a risk the Church doesn't want people to take.

8) They were the original Pledge protesters.

I feel like I should say something nice about the Witnesses.

The first major legal battle involving the Pledge of Allegiance involved a Witness family in the 1930s.

A little boy said he didn't want to salute the flag because his religion taught him not to bow down or pledge allegiance to anything except God.

He was expelled from school and the courts said that was the right decision.

Years later, kids from a Witness family from Pennsylvania also refused to salute the flag, and their case made it all the way to the Supreme Court. The justices voted 8-1... against the family.

It was a horrible decision, it was reversed with another case a few years later, but they deserve some credit for protesting mandatory participation in the Pledge. Today, it's usually atheists who make the news for protesting the Pledge, but that wasn't always the case.

They did it. It wasn't easy. They got harassed for it at the time but they stood strong on this issue. So good on them.

9) There are so many resources for ex-JWs or people looking to get out.

Did you know there's a subreddit just for ex-JWs? It's awesome.

There are also several websites exposing the church's beliefs.

Religious Terrorist Plotted To Kill Entire American Town & He's Already Out Of Jail

"An ex-Congressional candidate from Tennessee faces up to five years in prison for plotting to burn down an upstate New York mosque and use an assault rifle against anyone who tried to stop him, according to court documents.

Actress Leah Remini Opens Up About Leaving Scientology

"For more than 30 years, actress Leah Remini was a devout member of the Church of Scientology, the controversial organization characterized as a religion and created by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Though some high-profile Scientologists made the decision to join the church during their adulthood, Remini had little choice in the matter, as she tells 'Oprah: Where Are They Now?' in the above video.

'My mother was in Scientology my whole life. Most people don't know that we were raised in it -- I didn't decide to get into it,' Remini clarifies. 'I was brought into it by my mom.'
While many outside of Scientology have a basic awareness of some beliefs and practices of its members, Remini says that the true commitment required of Scientologists is far less known.

'I don't think people know the amount of dedication it takes to be in this organization,' she says. 'I mean, it was every day, three-and-a-half hours minimum, seven days a week.'”

First American City To Protect Atheists From Discrimination

"While conservatives in Indiana and Arkansas were explaining last month why their new religious objections laws weren't invitations to discriminate against gays, the leaders of Wisconsin's capital city were busy protecting the rights of another group: atheists.

In what is believed to be the first statute of its kind in the United States, Madison banned discrimination against the non-religious on April 1, giving them the same protections afforded to people based on their race, sexual orientation and religion, among other reasons.

It's hardly surprising that such a statute would originate in Madison, an island of liberalism in a conservative-leaning state and the home of the Freedom from Religion Foundation. But the ordinance's author, Anita Weier, said it didn't arise from an actual complaint about alleged discrimination based on a lack of religious faith."

Christian Persecution? It's Everywhere. Can I Name One Example? No [Hilarious video]

"At the South Carolina Freedom Summit, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN 7) advocated State Department intervention when asked what role the United States should play in protecting Christians around the world:

One of the things that we should be doing here is being very strong in our stance with religious freedom in our country... Our allies around the globe want to see us stay strong on our rights and not erode those rights... With the human rights violations and religious persecutions around the globe, we need a State Department that is going to step in and say, "This is not acceptable."

Marsha Blackburn thought that Christians are being persecuted in the U.S., but could not give any examples when asked by this reporter."

Bart Ehrman on Problem of Suffering - UCB

Institute of International Studies, Regents of the University of California at Berkeley "Conversations with History" host Harry Kreisler welcomed biblical scholar Bart Ehrman on a show titled "Biblical Insights into the Problem of Suffering" April 17th, 2008. The appearance was largely due to Bart's book release at the time, "God's Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question -- Why We Suffer."

Harry shapes a discussion exploring Bart's intellectual odyssey focused on how the Bible explains the problem of human suffering. The conversation includes a discussion of the challenges of biblical interpretation when confronting this age old problem of the human condition. Included are topics such as the contribution of the prophets, a comparison of the old and new testaments, the book of Job, and the emergence of apocalyptic writers. The best quality of this video here seen was rendered from a VHS copy.

Americans Are Losing Their Religion

With every passing year the share of the population that identifies as Christian inches down ever so slightly and the share of the population that identifies as atheist or agnostic goes up very slightly as well. Now over enough years that change can be quite dramatic.

Cenk Uygur (https://twitter.com/cenkuygur) and John Iadarola (https://twitter.com/jiadarola) break down the story. Are you part of the group who gave up on religion? Tell us why or why not in the comments.

Even though some politicians claim America is a "Christian nation," the share of the population that identifies as Christian has declined significantly in recent years.

New statistics from the Pew Research Center show that between 2007 and 2014, the number of Americans who identify as Christian dropped by nearly eight percentage points, from 78.4 percent to 70.6 percent.

At the same time, Pew’s 2014 U.S. Religious Landscape Study found that the number of people who are religiously unaffiliated -- either atheist, agnostic or simply “nothing in particular” -- has grown by more than six percentage points, from 16.1 percent in 2007 to 22.8 percent in 2014.

Charlie Hebdo & Texas Cartoon Contest Differ In a Hugely Important Way

"One day after two jihadist gunman attempted to shoot up a Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest in Garland, Texas before they were killed by police, Charlie Rose invited two cartoonists for the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which experienced a deadly attack on its offices earlier this year, to comment on the parallels — or lack thereof — between the two incidents.

“To be honest, I can imagine the kind of comparison you can make between the Charlie Hebdo attack of January 7 and this event, but there is nothing to do [with one another], there is no comparison, absolutely no comparison,” Jean-Baptiste Thoret said in a clip of a longer interview set to air tonight.

While he described the group that put on the event in Texas as part of an “anti-Islamic movement” against the “Islamization of the U.S.,” Thoret said the motives of Charlie Hebdo are “absolutely not the same.” For the magazine, he said it “was a question of criticizing” all religions, not Muslim people “in particular.”"

Megyn Kelly & Bill O'Reilly Duke It Out Over Muhammad Contest

"Megyn Kelly challenged Bill O’Reilly on his show when he expressed some hesitance about what Pamela Geller‘s group did in inviting people to draw Mohammad. Geller’s event in Texas ended up being targeted by two shooters, who were killed, and there’s been quite a debate today about causality and whether Geller’s group provoking Muslims in such a manner brought the attack on themselves.

Kelly told O’Reilly of course it doesn’t, because the point they were making about free speech was a solid one. The First Amendment, she said, isn’t meant to protect popular speech; it’s meant to protect “the most outrageous, offensive, incendiary speech.”

O’Reilly countered, “It’s always cause and effect… This is what happens when you light the fuse, you get violence.” Kelly was surprised to hear that, telling O’Reilly he sounds like he’s “attacking the event itself.”"

Fox News Priest: Obama, Like All Atheists, Can't Be Trusted

"Catholic priest and Fox News contributor Father Jonathan Morris argued over the weekend that atheists were not suitable candidates for president because it was “hard to trust” someone who did not believe that God would punish them.

“One thing is very certain, you can’t fake religion,” Morris said of the Republican presidential candidates on Sunday’s edition of Fox & Friends. “Politicians sometimes fall into that, I think. What matters most to us Americans — those who will be voting — is what these guys said before they were running for president, the way in which they lived before they started running for president.”

“I think they need to be very clear about the values they believe in, not making stuff up in order to get votes,” he continued."

Megan Fox, Evolution Exhibit "Auditer" - Friendly Atheist Podcast

Megan Fox is the apparent evolution-denier who “debunked” a science exhibit at Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History and posted the video on YouTube.

In a long, far-ranging, and sometimes infuriating interview, we talked about the reactions to her “audit” videos, whether her gender plays a role in the backlash, and why she doesn’t consider herself a Creationist.

We also discussed why she believes not censoring the Internet in a local library’s adult section sanctions “taxpayer funded access to child porn.” (In response to her battle with the Orland Park Public Library, readers of this site raised nearly $7,000 for the library’s general fund.)

Notes:

Here’s a link to Lindy West‘s story on This American Life.

Here are a couple of the articles the Chicago Tribune wrote about Fox’s battle with the library. However, Fox believes that these articles tell a more honest version of the events.

Jesus and the Historian

Bart D. Ehrman presented "Jesus and the Historian" at the Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium, 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Biblical scholars have long recognized the discrepancies between the four New Testament Gospels and the difficulties that result in determining who Jesus really was. Can these four Gospels be relied upon to give us an accurate account of Jesus’s words and deeds? Bart brings to bear his analysis and lengthy scholarship to answer this question.

This event was sponsored as a joint venture of St. John’s Episcopal Church, on the Square, Carlisle and the Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Have you read the bible?

Bart D. Ehrman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bart Ehrman came to UNC in 1988, after four years of teaching at Rutgers University. At UNC he has served as both the Director of Graduate Studies and the Chair of the Department of Religious Studies. A graduate of Wheaton College (Illinois), Professor Ehrman received both his Masters of Divinity and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where his 1985 doctoral dissertation was awarded magna cum laude.

Cop Kicks Black Man In Face In Brutal Video

"A Dover, Del., police officer who faced no criminal charges in 2013 for knocking a surrendering man unconscious with a jaw-breaking kick could face jail time, after all.

In 2013, then-attorney general Beau Biden (Vice President Joe Biden’s son) failed to get a grand jury indictment against Cpl. Tom Webster for injuring Lateef Dickerson without cause. But a judge in a civil rights lawsuit recently ruled that a video of the event could be released publicly, and current Attorney General Matt Denn brought the case again, resulting in an indictment for second-degree assault Monday.

In the aftermath of Ferguson, Mo., video evidence has played a decisive role in at least one case against a police officer accused of excessive force against black suspects. In North Charleston, S.C., police brought murder charges against the officer who shot a fleeing black man in the back and then appeared to plant evidence to suggest the man had been armed with a Taser. Officials admitted that no charges would have been brought if a bystander had not recorded the shooting."

Pope Francis To Tackle Climate Change

Cenk Uygur host of The Young Turks discusses a planned encyclical to be released by Pope Francis about climate change and the environment.

"An encyclical is a letter sent from the Pope to the Bishops directly under his sphere of influence that lays down a plan to be carried out by the entire Catholic Church. Pope Francis has declared that he will be sending out an encyclical this summer regarding climate change and the environment. It is unknown at this time why the Pope has chosen to tackle climate change now, but some guesses from experts have been made. It is expected that the Pope will declare that focusing on climate change is a part of christianity being stewards of the planet, as is described in the teachings that the Catholic Church follows."

Living the Secular Life: New Answers to Old Questions

OVER THE LAST 25 YEARS, “no religion” has become the fastest-growing religion in America. Around the world, hundreds of millions of people have turned away from the traditional faiths of the past and embraced a moral yet nonreligious—or secular—life, generating societies vastly less religious than at any other time in human history. Drawing on innovative sociological research, Dr. Zuckerman—a Pitzer College professor who founded a Department of Secular Studies, the first of its kind—illuminates this demographic shift with the moral convictions that govern secular individuals, offering crucial information for the religious and nonreligious alike.

Living the Secular Life reveals that, despite opinions to the contrary, nonreligious Americans possess a unique moral code that allows them to effectively navigate the complexities of modern life. Zuckerman discovered that despite the entrenched negative beliefs about nonreligious people, American secular culture is grounded in deep morality and proactive citizenship—indeed, some of the very best that the country has to offer.

Jimmy Dore, author: Your Country Is Just Not That Into You

In this latest terrific interview, hilarious and incisive political comedian Jimmy Dore (http://twitter.com/jimmy_dore) sits down with The Young Turks' host Cenk Uygur (http://twitter.com/cenkuygur) to discuss politics, the media and how corporations have seized control of them both - all of which Jimmy also covers in his new book, "Your Country Is Just Not That Into You: How the Media, Wall Street, and Both Political Parties Keep on Screwing You - Even After You've Moved on."

Along the way the two also discuss Jimmy's Chicago upbringing and why, as the 12th of 12 kids in an Irish Catholic family, he was eminently disposable, how ABC newscaster Brian Williams can be a terrific guy and still be a huge part of what's destroying the country, and why on earth someone making $50,000 a year would ever care about the estate tax.

Christian Group Wants To Out Gay Republican Candidates And Staff

Cenk Uygur host of The Young Turks discusses a Christian group that wants Christians to investigate Republican Candidates and out any homosexual candidates or homosexuals on their staff.

"Apparently seeing 1984 as more of a blueprint than a cautionary tale, the christian themed American Renewal Project is going out of its way to ask pastors and church goers to out homosexuals that are working for Republican Candidates in the 2016 Presidential Race. The group tried to make sure it didn't look like a hate group, with spokesperson David Lane making it clear that they didn't hate homosexuals or any member of the LGBTQ community, they just weren't a fan of the idea of gay-marriage because they're a hate group aimed at outing homosexuals in the Republican Campaigns that find.

As of now the group has not found any substantial evidence that their witch-hunt was successful."

Aasif Mandvi of The Daily Show: Not "That Kind of Muslim" (Interview w/ Cenk Uygur)

Aasif Mandvi established himself as a working actor in Hollywood in the 1990s and early 2000s appearing on TV shows like Miami Vice, CSI, Law & Order, The Sopranos and Oz. But he became a household — if often mispronounced — name after joining The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a “Senior Foreign-Looking Correspondent” in 2006.

Today Mandvi writes, produces and stars in a comedy web series poking fun at 80s sitcoms and anti-Muslim bias called “Halal in the Family” (http://halalinthefamily.tv)

In this interview, he talks with The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur about:

- Turning down The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s initial offer for him to audition
- Why his youth spent in the north of England helped him as an adult trying to pick up American women
- How 9/11 changed everything for American Muslims
- How “Halal in the Family” was inspired by news anchor Katie Couric
- Long-standing Muslim traditions that CELEBRATE portraits of the Prophet Muhammad
- What motivates “New Atheists” like Bill Maher and Sam Harris to generalize about Muslims
- How his acting career was inspired in equal parts by The Fonz and Omar Sharif
- Why he once told a casting agent he’d be willing to learn how to be a snake charmer

Jerry DeWitt was a Pentecostal preacher from Louisiana whose faith began cracking a few years ago. At first, he battled with his doubts internally, but he soon realized he no longer believed what he had been saying from the pulpit for nearly 25 years.

When he finally declared — publicly — that he was an atheist, his life began to fall apart. He wrote about his deconversion in his book Hope After Faith. You may have also seen him in the recent CNN special “Atheists: Inside the World of Non-Believers.”

Hemant spoke with Jerry recently about what led him to initially doubt his religious beliefs, his journey through the Clergy Project, and how he can still get himself into “preacher mode” when speaking.

Buses Forced To Run Disgusting Anti-Semtic Ads

"For some weird reason, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) wasn’t keen on running ads which read “Killing Jews is worship that draws us closer to Allah.” But thanks to a judge’s decision on Tuesday, these catchy anti-Semitic-seeming-but-actually-Islamophobic posters will be coming soon to a bus near you (if you live in New York)!

The ad in question was paid for by the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), a so called “Pro-Israel” organization, which the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) labels a hate group, lead by Pamela Geller, whom the SPLC calls, “the anti-Muslim movement’s most flamboyant figurehead.” You may remember Geller from her previous tasteless and hateful campaigns like the San Francisco bus signs which compared Muslims to Nazis and said “Stop the hate… End all U.S. aid to Islamic countries.” Or the Washington DC-based billboards which read, “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat jihad.”

The poster designed for the New York state of mind features a man wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh who is quoted as saying, “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah.” The ad attributes the quote to “Hamas MTV” and follows up with the killer (pun intended) tagline, “That’s His Jihad. What’s yours?”

"Kevin Moore, the man who filmed 25-year-old Freddie Gray‘s arrest, was reportedly arrested in Baltimore on Thursday night, according to a Facebook post from “We Cop Watch,” a group that routinely films police activity.

Moore, who is said to have cooperated with police and turned over the video, claimed he was targeted after the police asked the public to identify him. They allegedly released his photo and told the public that he was “wanted for questioning.”

The Facebook post linked to a Counter Current News article claiming Moore was arrested along with Cop Watch activists Chad Johnson and Tony White. The group also asked for help from lawyers. Moore was apparently released overnight, but Johnson and White are still in custody."
