Mark Zuckerberg Reverses Decision On Free Speech

"Only two weeks after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg released a strongly worded #JeSuisCharlie statement on the importance of free speech, Facebook has agreed to censor images of the prophet Muhammad in Turkey — including the very type of image that precipitated the Charlie Hebdo attack.

It’s an illustration, perhaps, of how extremely complicated and nuanced issues of online speech really are. It’s also conclusive proof of what many tech critics said of Zuckerberg’s free-speech declaration at the time: Sweeping promises are all well and good, but Facebook’s record doesn’t entirely back it up.

Just this December, Facebook agreed to censor the page of Russia’s leading Putin critic, Alexei Navalny, at the request of Russian Internet regulators. (It is a sign, the Post’s Michael Birnbaum wrote from Moscow, of “new limits on Facebook’s ability to serve as a platform for political opposition movements.”) Critics have previously accused the site of taking down pages tied to dissidents in Syria and China; the International Campaign for Tibet is currently circulating a petition against alleged Facebook censorship, which has been signed more than 20,000 times."

Bill Nye — Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation

Sparked by a controversial debate in February 2014, Bill Nye has set off on an energetic campaign to spread awareness of evolution and the powerful way it shapes our lives.

In his new book, "Undeniable Evolution and the Science of Creation," Bill Nye explains why race does not really exist; evaluates the true promise and peril of genetically modified food; reveals how new species are born, in a dog kennel and in a London subway; takes a stroll through 4.5 billion years of time; and explores the new search for alien life, including aliens right here on Earth. With infectious enthusiasm, Bill Nye shows that evolution is much more than a rebuttal to creationism; it is an essential way to understand how nature works—and to change the world.

Christian Bale Calls Moses A Terrorist & Fox News Loses It

"In an interview with ABC’s Nightline, Christian Bale described his Exodus: Gods and Kings character Moses as a “freedom fighter” and a “terrorist” against the slaveholding Egyptian empire.

Enter Fox & Friends with a segment ridiculing the actor’s comments part of their regular “Fight for Faith” segment (normally reserved for stories on the persecution of Christians and/or Todd Starnes).

“[He was] absolutely seen as a freedom fighter,” Bale said. “A terrorist, in terms of the Egyptian empire. What would happen to Moses if he arrived today? Drones would turn out after him, right?”

“He certainly wasn’t thinking about drones,” Father Jonathan Morris reacted Tuesday morning on Fox. The priest attempted to rationalize Bale’s thoughts, noting that the actor likely meant to describe Mose’s aggressive tactics in freeing the Hebrew slaves."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Transcript:

Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science. So if we raise a generation of science students who don’t understand the main idea in biology they’re going to be incompletely educated students and this is going to be trouble for the United States because the United States keeps in the game economically by innovating – having new ideas, new products, new ways of doing things. That’s what the United States produces and brings to the world. And if we raise a significant fraction of our students who don’t understand science we’re not going to have the engineers and scientists to continue this tradition. So for me it’s troubling objectively or subjectively as one can be and as a citizen of the U.S.

I believe, I think here on Big Think that the problem is the same thing that allows us to recognize patterns to imagine shapes and things and routes and ways to get things done before we actually start doing those things that that ability also enables us to understand that despite our best efforts we’re all going to die. And I think that makes all of us a little nutty. We all find it a little troubling. And so because it seems incredible that all this stuff that we store in our brain, all the memories we have, all the mental images that we are able to keep, all the algebra that we learn, that all that goes away when we die is really hard for all of us to accept. And along with this is that we are not nature’s last word. We are not the final answer that nature came up with. That we are not what some entity created as his or her very best work. We’re just one more step on the evolutionary timeline. And for many people that’s so troubling they can’t accept it at all. For me, of course, it’s empowering and amazing and it makes me want to live every moment of every day in the best way possible. But for a lot of people it’s literally unimaginable.

Our journey begins when I was in New York. I’m living in New York nowadays but a year and a half ago I came here on an airplane and I had to be someplace for a television interview at – I had to get up around 5:00 a.m. Eastern time which was 2:00 a.m. Pacific time. And by the time I got to Big Think I was worn out. I was a little worn out. And you guys asked me a fabulous question about creationism. I’m not sure why you chose to ask that question and I spoke from the heart how troubling I find it for the United States science educational system, for our science students in the U.S. to be excluded or not be enlightened and not be enabled by the fundamental idea in all of biology which is descent by natural selection, evolution. So you guys posted that and people went a little crazy on the electric Internet, the computer machine that the kids use. And I just remind everybody when people take the time to write and they take the time to hate me that much, these are not people you’re not going to reason with. These are not people that you’re going to sit down and have a conversation with and a discussion and achieve a new conclusion. We each have pretty much made up our minds and so you can’t worry about that stuff too much.

My concern is not for the grownups who take the time to write these inflammatory things and react to your fabulous website and so on. My concern is for the people who are still in school, the people who are the future of the U.S., the future of the U.S. economy. And larger the future of the world’s economy. I mean the United States is so influential. It’s the third most populous nation in the world and it’s the nation that sent people to the moon. I mean it’s still a big influence. You can make very strong arguments for South Korea, Japan – huge economies doing amazing – Brazil doing amazing things. But still the United States is the leader in this stuff and so when we exclude a generation of science students we’re headed for trouble. [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED]

Torture Killed Their Savior, That’s Why These Poll Results Stun

"Last Tuesday, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a harrowing executive summary of a new report detailing the CIA’s use of “Enhanced Interrogation Techniques” on prisoners detained at Guantanamo Bay and other prisons. The summary described the agency’s willingness to use brutal methods such as water-boarding, force-feeding, and sexual threats, and ultimately condemned such tactics as inhumane and ineffective for fighting the war on terror.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney and other former staffers from the George W. Bush White House took to the airwaves to try and defend the policies, but many such as Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) quickly labeled the CIA’s methods as torture, and thus inhumane. But as Sarah Posner reported over at Religion Dispatches, a recent Washington Post/ABC poll showed that the majority of Americans would not classify the CIA’s techniques as torture, and most — 59 percent — thought the agency’s treatment detainees was justified. Posner lamented this fact, but also noted another unsettling trend: Christians polled were actually more likely than the general public to support torture."

Rapping for Moral Progress — Baba Brinkman Performs "The Moral Arc Rap"

On a veranda in Manhattan where nobody's packin' an AK
So what happened? Our species has never been less than
A seedy procession of guns, germs and steel, diseases and weapons
Pirates and warlords with devious ethics
This planet hasn't always been a safe place to be skeptic
But listen, no bombs, no screams, no gunshots... Just city and silence
I'm 36 and none of my closest friends' lives have ended in violence!
What happened is the moral arc
A species enjoying an engorgement of its moral parts
In the past it was gladiators in a pit getting getting torn apart
But now it's a contest of wits, ideas honed and sharp
That's how we go from the superstitions of Joan of Arc
To one day exploring the stars
And Shermer's new book is the chart
Tracking the expansion of the moral sphere
Interchangeable perspectives are the reason that no one here
Plans to put a cigarette out in the carpet or pour their beer
Over Gerry's head when he says something offensive to sensitive ears
It's the golden rule, rational reverberations from the enlightenment
Or maybe it's the fear that Gerry would stop inviting them
A leviathan system of punishment
The key to a peaceful species: we've been running with it ever since we discovered it
So the next time you feel like you're drowning with no life preserver
In a civilization rife with crimes and murder, just turn to Michael Shermer
He can expose the exact stats for you and show you the ratio
He's a beacon for reason, he's totally stable, yo
Even though he got married and discovered ghosts in his radio
That was an aberration, he's still a skeptic, okay? So away we go
Shermer has seen the mountaintop, a peaceful equilibrium
A future in which the Moral Arc is taught as history for at least a millennium
It's MLK day, time for violence to vacate
Time for science to demonstrate ways to make this planet a safe space

Michael Shermer Discussing The Moral Arc

In Dr. Michael Shermer’s latest book, The Moral Arc: How Science and Reason Lead Humanity toward Truth, Justice, and Freedom, he claims that we are living in the most moral period of our species’ history.

It is a book about moral progress that demonstrates through extensive data and heroic stories that the arc of the moral universe bends toward truth, justice, and freedom. Of the many factors that have come together over the centuries to bend the arc in a more moral direction, science and reason are foremost.

The Scientific Revolution led by Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton was so world-changing that thinkers in other fields consciously aimed at revolutionizing the social, political, and economic worlds using the same methods of science. This led to the Age of Reason and the Enlightenment, which in turn created the modern secular world of liberal democracies, civil rights and civil liberties, equal justice under the law, open political and economic borders, and the expansion of the moral sphere to include more people—and now even animals—as worthy of moral consideration. Epic in scope, The Moral Arc is the Cosmos of human history.

'The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven' Author Admits He Lied

"A bestselling Christian book that claims to detail a boy's trip to heaven and his return to Earth is being pulled from stores after one of its co-authors admitted he made the whole thing up.

The 2010 memoir, "The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven," was written by Alex Malarkey and his father, Kevin Malarkey, a Christian therapist in Ohio.

In 2004, when Alex was 6, the two were badly injured in an automobile accident. Alex Malarkey ended up in a coma for two months, and the book claims to tell the story of his trips to heaven during that time.

Malarkey described a heaven with a "hole in outer heaven" that goes to hell. Alex Malarkey detailed his conversations with Jesus Christ and meetings with the devil, who at one point blamed him for the accident."

Bill Donohue: MUSLIMS ARE RIGHT TO BE ANGRY

"Killing in response to insult, no matter how gross, must be unequivocally condemned. That is why what happened in Paris cannot be tolerated. But neither should we tolerate the kind of intolerance that provoked this violent reaction.

Those who work at this newspaper have a long and disgusting record of going way beyond the mere lampooning of public figures, and this is especially true of their depictions of religious figures. For example, they have shown nuns masturbating and popes wearing condoms. They have also shown Muhammad in pornographic poses.

While some Muslims today object to any depiction of the Prophet, others do not. Moreover, visual representations of him are not proscribed by the Koran. What unites Muslims in their anger against Charlie Hebdo is the vulgar manner in which Muhammad has been portrayed. What they object to is being intentionally insulted over the course of many years. On this aspect, I am in total agreement with them.

Stephane Charbonnier, the paper’s publisher, was killed today in the slaughter. It is too bad that he didn’t understand the role he played in his tragic death. In 2012, when asked why he insults Muslims, he said, “Muhammad isn’t sacred to me.” Had he not been so narcissistic, he may still be alive. Muhammad isn’t sacred to me, either, but it would never occur to me to deliberately insult Muslims by trashing him.

Anti-Catholic artists in this country have provoked me to hold many demonstrations, but never have I counseled violence. This, however, does not empty the issue. Madison was right when he said, “Liberty may be endangered by the abuses of liberty as well as the abuses of power.”"

Pastor Punches a Boy for not Taking God Seriously Then Brags About It

"In a newly discovered video, Pastor Eric Dammann admit to punching a child right in the chest because he didn’t take God seriously. And he considers that an ultimately good thing.

As he recounts the story, there was a 'real smart-aleck' at some youth group he was at, a 'bright kid' who was 'just trying to push my buttons and was “not taking the Lord serious.'”

Debate Topic: Which Better Explains Reality? Atheism or Theism?

Silverman asks Turek, "Why Did God Setup Adam With the Tree of Knowledge?" Turek avoids that question. Basically, God being all-knowing knew ahead of time that despite the warnings he would give to Adam & Eve, they are still going to eat the apple. What was the purpose of creating this tree of knowledge? Who was it meant for to be eaten by? At the time, Adam & Eve were the only 2 people in the garden.

Obviously this tree of knowledge was specifically created to be eaten by Adam & Eve. They did exactly what god wanted them to do, It was God's choice to create and place the tree where he knew the outcome he desired would take place. This has nothing to do with "Free Will" of Adam & Eve because the choice and outcome were all determined by The Christian God.

David Silverman Debate Mormons on Religion, Morality and Science atheist

David Silverman is the current president of the American Atheists, a non-profit organization that supports the rights of atheists and the removal of expressions of religion in public when possibly interpretable as governmental endorsement, in accordance with the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

David Silverman began publicly challenging religion in high school and often states in interviews that he became an atheist at the age of six.Although he was never in the closet about his disbelief, he was forced to do his Bar mitzvah. He calls this the turning point in his life where he decided never to lie about his atheism again because he had gotten up on stage and told all the people he knew that he believed in God. Seventeen years later his father admitted to him that he also was an atheist. He received a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Brandeis University and a Marketing MBA from Penn State University. Silverman is an inventor with seventy four patents, and has authored several articles, including a cover story for Inventors Digest.

David Silverman has worked with the American Atheists organization since 1996, and has held a variety of roles, including: New Jersey State Director, Communications Director, and Vice President. He was elected president of American Atheists on September 16, 2010, following Ed Buckner.

David Silverman also cohosts the Atheist Viewpoint television program, writes for the NoGodBlog, attends protests, debates and conferences for atheism and freethought, across the country.

Papua New Guinea Women Fleeing Sorcery Accusations

"A number of women in Papua New Guinea have been forced to flee their homes amid accusations they practice witchcraft, becoming the latest victims of a growing phenomenon of sorcery-related violence, officials have said.

Ruth Kissam, a youth coordinator with the Western Highlands Provincial Government told Radio Australia that four women in Enga province in Papua New Guinea's northern highlands "have fled their villages," and said "they are refugees in their own land."

Earlier reports said the four women, along with 13 children, were in danger of being killed. The women had purportedly been fingered by a "witch-hunter" who sought to blame them for a measles outbreak that had killed several locals.”

“Mike Huckabee is widely known as an amiable fellow. Whatever you might think of his politics, he seems like a nice guy. But Mike Huckabee is a con artist. Literally.

Like many conservative pundits, Huckabee maintains an email list that he uses to generate income. The way it works is that because of his public profile, lots of people will sign up for his list, and then he can sell those names and addresses to people who want to sell things to those people. Maybe it's a book from a conservative publisher, say, or a pitch to donate to a conservative cause. But in many cases, it's just a con. "

Bill Nye Talks Dogs and Explores the Lessons of Canine Evolution

Bill Nye the Science Guy returns to Big Think to discuss evolution, this time from a canine point of view. Nye explains how dogs evolved out of an early human-wolf interaction which today benefits both species. He also draws a comparison between dog breeds and the social construct of race, claiming that both are man-made myths not steeped in science. Bill's latest book is "Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation."

The Undeniable Ironic Truth Of Fundamentalism Is Clearer Than Ever

"As the slaughter at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris reminds us, the phrase “religious extremism” is useless in that it is almost entirely devoid of content. It matters — and it matters a great deal — which religion is under consideration. The world does not have much of a problem with Quaker extremism, Mormon extremism, African Methodist Episcopal extremist, Reform Jewish extremism, Zen Buddhist extremism, Southern Baptist extremism, etc. We’ve seen, over the past few decades, scattered paroxysms of Hindu extremism and Sikh extremism (India), Buddhist violence (Burma), quasi-Christian cult violence (Uganda, Sudan), etc., but the big show in terms of violent extremism is the never-ending circus of jihad.

Juan Cole, in a particularly dopey moment, compared Sarah Palin, of all people, to the sort of people who just carried out a mass murder in Paris. “The values of [John McCain’s] handpicked running mate, Sarah Palin, more resemble those of Muslim fundamentalists than they do those of the Founding Fathers,” he wrote. “What’s the difference between Palin and a Muslim fundamentalist? Lipstick.”

Lipstick and 3,000 corpses in lower Manhattan, hundreds of thousands more around the world, and a dozen new ones in a Paris magazine office."

12 Killed In Barbaric Attack On French Satire Magazine

“Before Wednesday, most Americans had never encountered the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. But they know now that the magazine was fearless in the face of threats. Fearless to the death.

Masked gunmen stormed into the magazine’s Paris headquarters near the Bastille monument and shot a dozen staffers, including the magazine’s editor. The gunmen — allegedly shouting “Allahu akbar!” (God is great) — also killed two police officers before escaping by car. It was Europe’s worst terror attack since the London bombings of July 7, 2005 — the notorious “7/7” explosions aboard three Underground trains and a double-decker bus that left 52 civilians and four suicide bombers dead.

Wednesday’s assault had a more intimate feel: Those of us in journalism know newsrooms, so it’s easy to imagine the setting, with a staff meeting in progress. There would have been discussions of what to publish, some debate perhaps, a few jokes. And underpinning the work a dedication to the magazine’s mission: challenging authority, convention, taste."

This AMAZING Fact Proves Why American Democracy Is Totally Broken

"The incoming Senate is comprised mostly of Republicans -- 54 to the Democrats' 44 (plus two independents, who hang out/vote with Democrats). But those Democrats actually received 20 million more cumulative votes than did the Republicans, as Vox pointed out (to much Internet traffic, no doubt) over the weekend. What gives?

As is the way with online writing, we were beaten to a more-thorough analysis by Real Clear Politics' Sean Trende, who outlines very neatly the ways in which the apparent contrast between popular support and Senate power isn't actually a big deal. (Certainly not suggestive, as Vox's Dylan Matthews offered, of the need to abolish the Senate.) But it's still worth another look at the numbers.

Here's one way of looking at them: Democratic senators got 20 million more votes than the Republicans. (Vox conflates those independent senators with the Democrats, which is a bit of a cheat but doesn't really matter since those senators are in the tiny states of Maine and Vermont.)"

It's our annual wrap-up of the best (and worst) of 2014. What are the things that made the headlines? Scientific breakthroughs? Best films? The most iconic figures? The biggest successes and failures of the year?

In 2014 The Right Fell Deeply In Love With Vladmir Putin

"A year ago, Russia's economy was riding high. Today, the country is widely thought to be entering a recession, if it's not already there.

The plunge in oil prices has been the main culprit, but Russia's economy has had trouble regaining its footing because of sanctions imposed by the West after the annexation of Crimea. President Obama and other Western leaders were quick to condemn Russia when it annexed the Crimean Peninsula last March, and they struggled to find a way to show their outrage.

"Obviously a military response to Ukraine was not on the table, and some response was necessary," says William Pomeranz of the Woodrow Wilson Center.

The response was a series of limited economic sanctions on companies and individuals close to President Vladimir Putin. These sanctions were derided as ineffectual, but European countries that depend on Russia for oil and gas were reluctant to go further. Then in July came a tragedy that would force the West's hand."

"Neil deGrasse Tyson undoubtedly hopes you and your family are having a wonderful holiday season. Nevertheless, a series of tweets sent by the astrophysicist on Christmas have incensed some, as he provocatively questioned both the significance of the holiday -- and the reason we celebrate it.

The messages drew a strong response across the Internet, with incensed commenters referring to the physicist as "a bigoted hack" and a "satanic shrill," among other names.

On Friday, apparently in response to the strong reactions his statements drew a day earlier, Tyson again took to Twitter, this time to ponder, "Imagine a world in which we are all enlightened by objective truths rather than offended by them.""
