Atheists on Religion, Science and Morality

Can we prove there is no God? Does it make sense to equate religion with science? Do theists have a monopology on morality or is secular morality superior? Was Richard Dawkins right to bring up the religious beliefs of Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney?

Cara Santa Maria (Senior Science Correspondent, Huffingtonpost.com) leads this week's panel on 'The Point' to discuss these issues and more with Michael Shermer (Publisher - Skeptic Magazine), Sean Carroll (Theoretical Physicist - Caltech), and Edward Falzon (author of 'Being Gay Is Disgusting').

Building alliances with clergy and religious communities

Reaching out across religious boundaries can be scary for science education advocates. Humanists, atheists, and the nonreligious can feel unsure how to approach clergy or religious communities, while the religious among us can find it awkward discussing religious issues with members of other denominations and religions.

To help navigate those issues, a panel of experts in interfaith outreach led this interactive online training. Panelists: Peter Hess, NCSE's Director of Outreach to Religious Communities; Sally Bingham, of Interfaith Power and Light; and Chris Stedman, a Humanist chaplain at Harvard and Yale Universities. Where: Online. When: March 26, 2014

"A Kentucky pastor who starred in a reality show about snake-handling in church has died -- of a snakebite.

Jamie Coots died Saturday evening after refusing to be treated, Middlesboro police said.

On "Snake Salvation," the ardent Pentecostal believer said that he believed that a passage in the Bible suggests poisonous snakebites will not harm believers as long as they are anointed by God. The practice is illegal in most states, but still goes on, primarily in the rural South.

Jamie Coots was a third-generation "serpent handler" and aspired to one day pass the practice and his church, Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name, on to his adult son, Little Cody."*

Questions for Christians: True Love

God's making a list, and checking it twice every millisecond...

The Most Embarrassing Anti-Gay Argument?

Appearing on CNN's The Situation Room, and speaking before Arizona governor Jan Brewer vetoed SB 1062 which would have effectively legalized discrimination based on religious grounds, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) explained to Wolf Blitzer that a veto would "eviscerate" freedom of speech.

5 Reasons why Your Miracles aren't Really Miraculous

5 Reasons why Your Miracles aren't Really Miraculous

1) Our memories are very selective. Amazing moments can take on a life of their own in the future.

True story: I liked this girl in college. One day, I run into her at the bus stop and we start talking. We hit it off. We dated for a couple of years. She was partly the reason I quit medical school and decided to become a teacher. And if I didn't quit school, I probably never would've become a vocal atheist.

If I were religious, that, to me, would be a perfect example of God guiding His hand to make sure we met. In reality, it was just a coincidence. If we hadn't met, if we hadn't dated, then something else would've happened and I just wouldn't have those cherished memories. I would've had different ones. Maybe better, maybe worse.

Looking back, we can always find those turning points in our lives. It's easy to call them miracles. Or to say God guided us in one particular direction. But you could easily explain that as just a coincidence.

2) Other peoples' miracles can sound pretty delusional.

When something happens to us, it's miraculous. When it happens to someone else, it's crazy. When we feel led to make a decision or we think God has blessed us with good luck, it seems perfectly normal to thank God. But when someone else tells you God was speaking to them and told them to quit their job, you think they're weird. You go home and talk smack about them with your spouse!

When someone else says God healed them of a disease, you want to see their medical records. When your cancer goes into remission, God had a hand in it...

3) Christians experience a lot of miracles...

Faith healers on television? Benny Hinn, Peter Popoff...
Incredibly successful pastors? They get their own reality shows
Bestselling books? They get their own bookstore sections!
Everything Snopes debunks? It's something you heard in church.

None of that happens with Muslim imams and hindu priests and Jewish rabbis. They all believe God is divine. They all believe in Miracles. But they don't market miracles like Christians do. Successful Christians love to pretend God's grace had everything to do with their success and not their own skills or luck. It's a powerful story that keeps perpetuating every time something goes right.

4) Miracles have never, ever been proven. There are things we can't explain, but there are no miracles. If you can prove supernatural powers exist, James Randi will give you a million dollars. Even the Catholic Church's supposed miracles that turn a Pope into a Saint are just stories that may lack a natural explanation.

5) If Miracles were real, our problems would be solved.

If God spoke to us and actually intervened and helped us, diseases would be eradicated, and our loved ones would always live, and we'd never get hurt... but as it turns out, miracles are rare, selective, subjective, and unverifiable.

The Bible: The Gospels - Part 24

The Pharisees ask Jesus if they should pay taxes or not. The Sadduces ask if a woman has seven husbands... which one of them is her husband in heaven? Also, Jesus thinks it GREAT for poor widows to give all their money to the temple with no thought for tomorrow on things like food, clothing, rent money, etc! Lord YHWH will provide I guess!

Now give me that old time religion
Give me that old indoctrination
Give me that fear of eternal damnation
It's good enough for me

It was good for the Hebrew mothers
Who were taught not to question
Who were worthless if they were barren
It's good enough for them

It was good for the Hebrew girlies
Who all had to marry their rapists
Or get stoned in front of their dad's house
For premarital sexy time

It was good for whiny Moses
Who God gave the Ten Commandments
And who ordered the execution
Of three thousand Israelites

It was good for the Apostle Paul
Who told slaves to obey their masters
It was good for ol' King David
Who killed tens of thousands of men

It was good for ol' Elijah
Who immolated all those soldiers
And had all those Baal priests killed
It was good enough for him

It was good for ol' Elisha
Who had bears maul all of those children
Just because they called him baldy
It was good enough for him

Richard Dawkins DEBUNKS Noahs Ark - Sydney Opera House

Noah's Ark (Hebrew: תיבת × ×—‎; Biblical Hebrew: Teyvat Noaḥ) is the vessel in the Genesis flood narrative (Genesis chapters 6--9) by which the Patriarch Noah saves himself, his family, and a remnant of all the world's animals when God decides to destroy the world because of mankind's evil deeds. God gives Noah detailed instructions for building the ark: it is to be of gopher wood, smeared inside and out with pitch, with three decks and internal compartments; it will be 300 cubits long, 50 wide, and 30 high; it will have a roof "finished to a cubit upward", and an entrance on the side.

A Church Divided: Methodists Clash Over Gay Marriage

"The church is really trying to sweep this under the rug and we're pretending we're all united, we're the United Methodist Church after all," says former Methodist minister Frank Schaefer on the division within the United Methodist Church (UMC) over the issue of homosexuality.

Schaefer says there was "no way in Hell" he would have declined when he was asked to ordain his son's same-sex wedding in 2007. "I saw it as an act of love," says Schaefer.

Others within the church saw it as an act of rebellion. Former Methodist Minister Frank Schaefer

Schaefer was stripped of his clerical credentials this past December after a 13-member jury of pastors found him guilty of disobeying church law. The UMC Book of Discipline, which contains the church's laws and doctrines, forbids celebrations of same-sex marriages and asserts that the practice of homosexuality is "incompatible with Christian teaching."

While Schaefer's defrocking may have been meant as a warning to silence rogue pastor's who disagree with the UMC Book of Discipline, it has arguably had the opposite effect: The church now faces a legitimate uprising by clergy members and laypeople within the denomination who passionately disagree with the church's stance on homosexuality. The internal debate has been waging since 1972 when the first language condemning homosexual practice was introduced in the Book of Discipline.

Schaefer is now an outspoken activist working to change Methodist policy on gay marriage. This movement within the UMC prompts the question: How do voluntary, private organizations change—or refuse to change— policies about matters that are central to their missions?

Religious practices change all the time—just ask Catholics who celebrated mass in Latin until the 1960s or Protestant groups that started ordaining women as ministers in the 1970s. But are there certain core beliefs that can never change?

Conservative theologians within the church argue that Schaefer's defrocking was justified because church law, by definition, must be upheld—otherwise, it is not a church law. They maintain that homosexuals are welcome in the church, but that one should abstain from the practice of homosexuality.

"The ultimate debate is not over sexuality—it's just one battle flag issue in the current culture wars that's been going on in the last 150 years between traditionalist and liberal revisionists," says Mark Tooley of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, a conservative Christian think-tank in Washington, D.C.UMC is experiencing a split in opinion on gay marriage

However, liberal theologians are a sizeable minority within the church and have been pushing back against the restrictive language every step of the way. Hundreds of Methodist ministers have publicly rejected the doctrine and, like Frank, some face punishment by trial for performing same-sex weddings.

Fellow mainline protestants have already moved toward accepting gay unions. These include the United Church of Christ and the Episcopal Church of America. However, the Methodist church seems to be going in the opposite direction. The margin of vote against changing the church's stance on homosexual unions was 61 to 39 percent at the 2012 General Conference, which meets every four years to vote on changes within the church. This was a wider disparity than in 2008.

The explanation has to do with the structure of the Methodist church. The UMC is very centralized—the General Conference makes rules for everything by way of a majority vote. This is very different from the other mainline denominations who operate as a loose federation of congregations with a shared tradition but not necessarily the same doctrine or rules. The loose federation allows the different congregations across the world more autonomy, a structure that has helped them maintain their unity even in the midst of disagreements on issues such as gay marriage.

Some UMC congregations believe gay marriage should be allowed in the ChurchCongregations in the UMC have less autonomy and a significant portion of the church lies outside of the U.S. While membership in the U.S. is declining, overseas branches are increasing—and these tend to be more conservative. The growing African Church has provided the votes at the General Conference to block any changes to the Book of Discipline liberalizing the stance on gay marriage.

"If the Church abandons its teaching on sexuality, there will in fact be a much deeper division and a formal schism," says Tooley.

Jake and Hugo read the worst part of the Bible... Judges 19

Judges 19 New International Version (NIV):

A Levite and His Concubine

19 In those days Israel had no king.

Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah. 2 But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, 3 her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her parents’ home, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him. 4 His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking, and sleeping there.

5 On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself with something to eat; then you can go.” 6 So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the woman’s father said, “Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself.” 7 And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night. 8 On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go, the woman’s father said, “Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!” So the two of them ate together.

9 Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said, “Now look, it’s almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home.” 10 But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.

11 When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Come, let’s stop at this city of the Jebusites and spend the night.”

12 His master replied, “No. We won’t go into any city whose people are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.” 13 He added, “Come, let’s try to reach Gibeah or Ramah and spend the night in one of those places.” 14 So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin. 15 There they stopped to spend the night. They went and sat in the city square, but no one took them in for the night.

16 That evening an old man from the hill country of Ephraim, who was living in Gibeah (the inhabitants of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields. 17 When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”

18 He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the Lord.[a] No one has taken me in for the night. 19 We have both straw and fodder for our donkeys and bread and wine for ourselves your servants—me, the woman and the young man with us. We don’t need anything.”

20 “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” 21 So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.

22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”

23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing. 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”

25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

29 When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel. 30 Everyone who saw it was saying to one another, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Just imagine! We must do something! So speak up!”

Satan Statue On Oklahoma State Capitol?

The Satanic Temple wants their statue to be placed on Oklahoma State Capitol grounds. The organization believes that they are entitled to fair treatment due to the monument of the Ten Commandments that exists on the Oklahoma State Capitol. This monument was allowed because it was not funded by the government, and legally, the Satanic Temple is entitled to the same right as any other religion.

Lissette Padilla and Elliot Hill discuss equal treatment and the balance between church and state in this clip from the Lip News.

What Does a 30% Chance of Rain Mean? (Understanding Risk, with Gerd Gigerenzer)

Risk management guru Gerd Gigerenzer explains some of our common misunderstandings surrounding risk and statistics. Gigerenzer's latest book is Risk Savvy: How to Make Good Decisions

Transcript:
In the good old times people learned how to read and to write. That's no longer sufficient in the high tech twenty-first century. We also need to know how to deal with risk and uncertainty. And that is what I mean with risk savvy. Here is a simple example. You hear on the weather report that there is a 30 percent chance of rain tomorrow. Thirty percent chance of what? Now I live in Berlin and most Berliners believe that it means that it will rain in 30 percent of the time, that is seven to eight hours. Others think it will rain in 30 percent of the region. Most New Yorkers believe that's all nonsense. It means it will rain on 30 percent of the days for which this prediction has been made, that is, most likely not at all. Many psychologists think that people can't learn how to deal with risk but in this case it's the experts, the meteorologists who have not learned how to communicate risk in an instinctive way that is to say to what class 30 percent refers. Time or region or days? And if you have some imagination you can think about other classes. For instance, one woman in New York said I know what 30 percent means. Three meteorologists think it rains and seven not.

Now getting soaked is a minor risk. But are we risk savvy when it comes to more important things. For instance, 20 year olds drive with their cell phone glued to their ears not realizing that they decrease their reaction time to that of a 70 year old. Or many Americans, about 20 percent, believe that they are in the top one percent income group. And as many believe they will soon be there. Or take health. So about an estimated one million children get every year unnecessary computer tomography CT scans. And that's really because they're not really clinically indicated. Which is not just a waste of time but also danger to the kids because a CT scan can have the radiation of a hundred chest x-rays and may lead in a small number of these kids later to cancer.

We deal everyday with risks but we haven't learned how to understand them. And the problem is not simply in the human mind but also in experts who really don't know what the risks are or don't know how to communicate. Or in other areas like if it's about finance or health have interests other than yours. So the key message is this. Everyone can learn to deal with risk. In that case everyone can learn to ask the question probability of what. And second, if you believe that you're safe by your delegating the responsibility of your wellness and health to experts then you may be disappointed because many experts do not know how to communicate probabilities or try to protect themselves against you as in health care as a potential plaintiff. So you have to think yourself. And that's the key message.

Bernie Madoff Worked Hard for the Money

Bernie Madoff worked hard to rob his victims of billions of dollars. Be it Monte or Madoff, con artists are skilled deceivers who understand human foibles and can use these skills to take unfair advantage. While there are always observers who are quick to blame the victim, people duped by con artists are not perpetrators. While it is true that human psychology and flawed thinking may help us become co-conspirators in such predations, nevertheless blaming the victim offers neither insight nor explanation. If we are going to understand how and why such schemes are successful, we must credit the con man.

The Rule of Nobody: Saving America from Dead Laws and Broken Government

"All of life works on responsibility," says Philip K. Howard. "Everybody listening to this...has achieved what they've achieved in life because they took responsibility to make it happen. Government is no different than that."

In 1995, Howard wrote The Death of Common Sense: How Law is Suffocating America, kicking off a national conversation about bureaucratic overreach and stupid regulations. In his new book, The Rule of Nobody: Saving America from Dead Laws and Broken Government, he extends and elaborates his analysis. It isn't bureaucratic gridlock or partisan polarization that's keeping Washington in perpetual mismanagement, argues Howard, but a fog of rules and regulations that has made it nearly impossible to figure out who is responsible.

Until civil servants can use common sense and practical judgement, he says, the government won't gain the flexibility needed for solving today's problems.

In a wide-ranging conversation with Reason's Nick Gillespie, Howard discusses many topics, including the following: the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's inability to quickly raise the height of the Bayonne Bridge to accommodate newer, taller ships (00:57); why even President Obama doesn't control the executive branch (5:37); why regulations haven't made nursing homes better (7:50); how even New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo couldn't shut down an unused juvenile detention center due to union rules (9:12); the long history of doctors gaming Medicare (10:31); why businesses are more flexible than governments (12:10); how technocratic views of government took over America; why mandatory minimums have led to abuse by prosecutors (18:42); specific reforms to shift from "automatic government" to individual responsibility (25:44); the goals of the Common Good Foundation (43:00); and the high probablitiy of "seismic change" in America's political culture (44:10).

Zacchaeus

Zacchaeus was a tiny little man
And a tax collector was he!
He had a position of importance
With wealth and prosperity!

Most Jews who worked for the Romans
Were corrupt beyond belief!
Jew tax collectors were labeled traitors
By the Jewish community.

One ordinary day in Jericho
He climbed a sycamore tree
Zacchaeus, he was curious -
And Jesus he wanted to see.

And when Jesus
Saw Zacchaeus in a tree
He said, 'Zacchaeus, come down!
You're a son of Abraham!
And I'm going to your house today!

The crowd was angry with Jesus
For going to Zacchaeus' place.
Why would the savior sully himself!
The whole thing was a big disgrace!

But little Zacchaeus was happy man,
He had seen the Lord that day!
He repented all his acts of corruption -
Gave half of his wealth away!

For a guy who gets
One mention in the Bible
People sure have a lot to say
About a tiny little man in a tree
Who is never mentioned again...
In Matthew, Mark, Luke or John!

Clement of Alexandria
Said Zacchaeus got a different name -
He was later named Matthias
And ol' Judas he replaced!

The story of Zacchaeus
Is used to illustrate
Your metaphorical loot in heaven
If you give earthly treasures away!
A divine call to humility!
Hey little dude, get outta that tree!

Satan Sunday School song lyrics (p.s.: Don't tell Moses):
If I stopped believing in religion,
Is my life worth living for single a day?
Could my metaphorical heart
Find rest and comfort
In letting go of beliefs of yesterday?

If I stopped believing in religion,
Would free thought be worth the loss of belief?
Is reality worth comparing -
For indoctrination in a fantasy?

O what liberation without religion!
All the different faiths preached here on earth!
In reality, I'm just fine without it!
Imagine living in a faith-free world!

And though I might live without religion,
You're going to grow old and die you say?
Is there no such as atheists in foxholes?
Nothing lasts forever... and that's ok!

78 Questions for Christians

Is Anne Frank burning in hell? How about Mahatma Gandhi? Is Fred Phelps in Heaven since he believed in the divinity of Jesus?

Should a killer who genuinely repents at the end of his life go to Heaven?

Should a kind-hearted atheist go to Hell for all eternity?

Do kind-hearted religious people who just aren't Christian also deserve to burn?

Would you be happy in heaven if someone you loved was in Hell?

If your child were dying, and I hope that never happens, would just pray for them or would you take them to a doctor? And if you'd do both, which one do you think has more of an impact?

Whose prayers does God answer? And if it's ultimately His Will, why bother praying?

If you have cancer, what would help you more: Certain drugs, or prayer?

If you had an amputated limb, would prayer ever bring it back?

If you have an exam coming up, what would contribute more to a higher score: Prayer or more studying?

If you prayed for me over YouTube right now, do you think I would know it?

What matters to God more: The quantity of people praying or the quality of their prayers? If quantity matters, shouldn't the most popular team always win the Super Bowl? If quality matters, why do people you love sometimes die no matter what you do?

Is it possible that your prayers have no supernatural effect and only serve to make you feel better?

Would you ever admit it if that were true?

Is there anything in your life that makes you doubt God's existence?

How would your life change if you had serious doubts about God's existence?

Was Jesus white?

Why does God seem more likely to answer the prayers of a talented athlete than a starving child overseas?

Why does God Seem to hate Africa?

If a group of Africans swooped in to your community with the intention of converting you and your neighbors to their tribal faith, what would your reaction be?

Does God speak to you?

If God spoke to you and told you to kill someone, would you do it?

Is God always watching you? How about when you're on the toilet?

How do you respond when someone who's not a Christian tells you about their religious faith? Do you listen and consider what they have to say or do you just ignore them because they don't believe what you believe?

What do you make of Muslims who think the Koran is the true holy book? Are they wrong? Have you read the Koran? Why do you dismiss them so easily?

Is homosexuality itself a sin?

Should gays and lesbians have the right to get married?

Why would God make people gay and then punish them for being gay?

If God's already sending gay people to hell, why do you feel the need to persecute them here on Earth?

Why does God playing hide and seek with all of humanity?

Do you believe Jesus is coming back to Earth during your lifetime?

If you do, what do you say to the many generations of people who have been saying that for centuries?

Why is the story of Jesus' birth and life so similar to that of mythological beings well before his time? (http://listverse.com/2009/04/13/10-ch...)

Is it possible that religion may have less to do with what's true and more to do with the circumstances of where you were born?

And They'll Know We Are Christians By Our Love

Satan sings slightly rewritten and more accurate to the source material Sunday School songs for the kiddies!

You know Christians... if you're going to say there's a "War On Christianity" in America...("self identifying" Christians make up approximately 3 out of every 4 Americans) the least you could do is admit that you brought it on yourselves!

Satan's Sunday School song lyrics:
God is three but one person
God is one he's the Son
God is one he's the Father
God is one... he's dove
It is not polytheism to say these three are one

Chorus:
And they'll know we are Christians by our message
We impose
Yes they'll know we are Christians by our "love"

We'll impose our religion
We will claim it is right
We'll say it's a war on Christians
If you resist or fight
Persecution is a complex
We'll adopt at any slight

We will work against Muslims
Gay people and Atheists
We will claim religious freedom
For ourselves but not the rest
'Cause freedom of religion's
Not the same as "from religion"

Creationism will be taught
In schools - just wait and see
Evolution is a lie
That Satan spread to deceive
And the Earth's only
Six thousand years old
The good book says

We will put the Ten Commandments
In front of courtrooms 'cross this land
Separation of church and state
We just don't understand
Judeo-Christianity's
The "basis for our laws"

Oh Land - White Nights

Why the American Family-Court System is Broken

"To get divorced, you can't just simply fill out a form that says 'I'm divorced.' You have to go to court and a judge has to approve the divorce," says Divorce Corp's Joe Sorge. "Breaking up is traumatic on its own, nevermind having to go to court and appear before a judge."

Sorge argues that because the legal code to get a divorce is so complex, nearly all respective parties have to hire expensive lawyers and pay legal fees that make the average non-contested divorce cost between $10,000 and $20,000. A contested divorce can run well over $50,000.

"It's the fourth most common cause of bankruptcy in the United States," says Sorge.

Sorge sat down with Reason TV's Tracy Oppenheimer to outline some of these institutional problems and possible resolutions that he addresses in his documentary and accompanying book, both titled Divorce Corp.

About 8 minutes.

ATTN POLICE: Enough Already with the Jaywalking Stings! Don't Cops Have Better Things To Do?

Cops across America really don't want you to jaywalk. In San Diego they doled out 328 tickets (on a single day!), in New York they bloodied an 84-year-old who crossed against a red light, and in Austin they jailed a jaywalking jogger.

Austinites responded to the incident with outrage, and Chief Art Acevedo reacted to their outrage with outrage of his own. "In other cities there's cops who are actually committing sexual assaults on duty," said Acevedo. "So I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin, Texas!"

And sure, jaywalkers in LA get stuck with $200 tickets, and entrepreneur Peter Shankman's offense of jogging in New York's Central Park before 6:00 a.m. could cost him as much as a thousand bucks, but it's important to remember that jaywalking crackdowns are all about keeping pedestrians safe. They definitely have nothing to do with raising revenue.

Bill Nye: The Science Guy - Archaeology

Bill Nye the Science Guy is talking about archaeology -- can you dig it?

Archaeologists are kid of like detectives. They're scientists who snoop through old or ancient people's things to find out what life was like thousands of years ago. Archaeologists find ancient cities, tombs, and temples by taking aerial photographs of Earth, by reading old documents, or by just looking at the shape of the land. When they think they've found a site, the archaeologists pick up a shovel and start digging. When archaeologists get close to an object, they dig very carefully. Sometimes they dig with nothing but a toothpick and a paintbrush. Whew!

People leave stuff around, things as big as buildings and as small as a shard of a clay jar. Archaeologists examine ancient objects and compare them to things from the past and present to learn about people and civilizations.
