Anderson Cooper Humiliates Anti-Gay Rep. On CNN

*Anderson Cooper took on Arizona state senator Al Melvin Monday night over the state's proposed legislation to allow businesses to exercise their religious freedom to discriminate against LGBT citizens. Melvin insisted, "It's nothing more and nothing less than protecting religious freedom in our state." Cooper noted how Arizona doesn't expressly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and grilled Melvin on why, then, they would need to reaffirm a right that isn't under threat in the state in the first place...*

Cooper went on to grill Melvin who couldn't come up with a good answer.
The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Oprah says Atheists in Awe Believe in God

So talk show host Oprah Winfrey said that atheists aren't really atheists if they are in "awe" with the universe, and therefore they believe in God. How anyone could misrepresent our position like this is beyond me, let alone a so-called "icon" loved by America. Further, Oprah is willing to go low by suggesting that perhaps a dead figure was wrong on the afterlife. Maybe this is why most rational folks are skeptical of popular media, along with how the media portrays atheists.

Is Democracy Overrated? Q&A with Columnist David Harsanyi

"I think the Founders weren't wary enough of democracy," says David Harsanyi, senior editor at The Federalist and a nationally syndicated columnist. "I think there are bigger problems with it."

Harsanyi sat down with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie to discuss his new book, The People Have Spoken and They Are Wrong: The Case Against Democracy, why we put too much weight on voting, and why praising democracy is just celebrating mob rule.

"Democracy's just a process that reflects the morals and ethics of the people who vote," he said. "It doesn't guarantee you freedom—just check out the Gaza Strip or Egypt or anywhere else."

DNA vs The Book of Mormon

For more than 170 years, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has declared the Book of Mormon to be a scriptural and literal history. Subtitled "Another Testament of Jesus Christ," it recounts the story story of an Israelite family who immigrated to and fully populated the American continents. Jesus, after His death and resurrection, is said to have visited this once-great Israelite civilization existing in the Americas.

The Book of Mormon teaches that these Israelites are the principal ancestors of modern-day Native Americans. New discoveries in DNA research currently allow scientists to test this historical claim. Thousands of Native Americans from more than 150 tribes have been tested to determine their ancestry.

Now the same DNA evidence used in courts of law can credibly speak to the validity of The Book of Mormon, which serves as the foundation of the Mormon religion. The evidence answers one basic question: Are Israelites the principal ancestors of Native Americans?

"DNA vs. The Book of Mormon" presents the evidence from DNA researchers, including Mormon scientists, who are wrestling with the DNA dilemma that now faces Mormonism.

Participants: Thomas W. Murphy; Dr. Simon Southerton; Dr. Randall Shortridge, and others.

Denelle Dixon-Thayer: Trading Away Your Privacy

Don't trust Facebook or Google with your personal information? You're not alone.

A recent Reason-Rupe poll found that when it comes to their personal info, more Americans trust even the National Security Agency or the Internal Revenue Service over Google or Facebook.

Mozilla's Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs, Denelle Dixon-Thayer, says "data hygiene" should be something every new or established tech company should be thinking about.

"Trust is our currency," said Thayer to Reason TV at the 2014 South by Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas. "If we don't have the trust of our users then we actually aren't going to be successful as a company."

Dixon-Thayer says big data companies need to be upfront with users about who has access to their data, how long their data is stored, and do what they can to inform users of government data requests.

"With data, may come a reward, but also a substantial risk," says Dixon-Thayer, who points out that if you keep information for a long time your company becomes open to subpoenas and NSA requests.

"It's just thinking about what that data can do for you and when does it lose its value to you," says Dixon-Thayer

In October 2013, Mozilla endorsed the USA FREEDOM Act, which would have amended the PATRIOT Act and ended dragnet collection of phone data while providing more oversight of surveillance programs and the FISA court. The bill is pending in the house judiciary committee.

Light and Color (Bill Nye: The Science Guy)

Lighten up. It's the "Light and Color" episode.

Without light, we wouldn't be able to see. It would be like living in a room with no windows, doors, or lamps. There's an old saying, "We don't see things; we see light bouncing off of things." We see things, and colors, when light bounces off things and into our eyes. White light, like the light from the Sun, is made up of all the different colors of light blended together. When white light hits something white, almost all of the light bounces into our eyes, and we see the color white.

Things are different colors because some light bounces off and other light gets absorbed.

An orange is orange because it absorbs all different colors of light except orange light.

Grass is green because it absorbs all different colors of light except green light.

Bill Nye's lab coat is blue because it absorbs all different colors of light except blue light. All colors, including black, are made in the same way. It's just a matter of reflecting or absorbing light.

Science will "color" your world with Bill Nye the Science Guy.

The law of beak and claw

This video shows a deep-sea squid Gonatus onyx fighting to eat an owlfish Pseudobathylagus milleri. It was recorded using remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts.

The title of this video refers to the law of tooth and claw, a literary theme depicting the violence in nature. Jack London's "The Call of the Wild" is a classic example of this theme.

This show talks about parents who, for whatever reason, raised children under religious teachings and rules and now find themselves in disagreement with doctrine they once held as Truth.

The Science Guy - Pseudoscience

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Bill Nye demonstrates the difference between real science and pseudoscience. Science is the process of testing claims. Any claim that can't be tested is based in pseudoscience. What's considered a pseudoscience? The Science of Opera with Stephen Fry and Alan Davies

What does great art do to our bodies?
In an exciting world first, The Science of Opera with Stephen Fry and Alan Davies saw a team of medical scientists from UCL discovering what happens inside us when we go to the opera.

Opera lover Stephen Fry took his friend, Royal Opera virgin and QI panellist Alan Davies, to the Royal Opera House. They were hooked up with the latest medical gadgetry to record the physical effects on their bodies of watching Verdi's political masterpiece Simon Boccanegra.

The Science of Opera promises some landmark medical discoveries as well as answering some key questions; was Alan Davies won over by opera? Did Stephen Fry get shivers down the spine during the show? Did either of them fall asleep? And what could opera do to you?

Weigh heigh he's got a headache
Weigh heigh he curses Canaan

The Arrogance of Creationism (2)

Creationists habitually indulge in pseudoscience, effectively acting as intellectually corrosive agents that detract from our ability to pursue progress. Ironically, the very same science that they misuse and abuse are the ones that allow them and the rest of us to maintain happy, healthy lives. The very same technology that they take for granted, and even use to spread their vile filth, is responsible for their lives of opulence and opportunity- opportunity that many of them actively squander, which is something that they try to have the rest of us do. Also ironic is that they do this out of a misplaced sense of righteousness, when in fact their actions have always been, at least in large part, responsible for the retardation of knowledge and progress in society.

No example, in my opinion, serves better than the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics at showcasing just how intellectually bankrupt these individuals are. They lack not only a cursory education in the matters on which they feel qualified to pontificate, but integrity as well, because no matter how many times one corrects a creationist's mistakes, it will continue to parrot the same old lies and fallacies as it always has. Indeed, by the time they finish watching this video, creationists will probably dismiss it out of hand and continue using the 2nd Law nonargument even though they know it's wrong. That's because the goal of creationism isn't to accumulate knowledge- it's to affirm a preexisting bias regardless of how many facts stand in the way. But hey, defending the words of the book of our Lord is always a moral thing to do, right? Wrong.

Ludwig Boltzmann was a religious man, and he also greatly admired Darwin and his work. Ironically, the very man who derived the form of the law that creationists use to attack evolution, accepted evolutionary theory! Creationists, this man who you would dismiss as "not a TRUE Christian" for accepting reality for what it is and not what his primitive texts demanded it to be has done more for humanity than any of you ever could.

A note about the ending- someone is likely to quite rightly point out that Boltzmann wasn't primarily responsible for the development of modern technology, but there is no denying that his role was indispensable. That being said, I'm aware that a great collection of other individuals are also hugely responsible for the derivations of different forms of entropy and the other theoretical frameworks that makes our technology possible, but seeing as Boltzmann was particularly pertinent to this video and its messages, I decided to focus mainly on him.

Bill Maher Trashes the Bible Noah Story and Psychotic Mass Murderer God

March 14, 2014 - On Friday evening, Bill Maher's "New Rules" segment concluded with a lengthy tirade against the arbitrary rules and customs set forth in the Bible, as well as some of the more unbelievable details religious folks still believe to be literally true. Maher began the monologue by declaring that America is "stupid" because 60 percent of the country reportedly believes the tale of Noah's ark is literally true. He went on to slam the film Noah as "floating giraffe crap," but said it "must be doing something right" since it's been condemned by both Muslims and Christians. And the fact that it might lose a lot of studio money, he joked, "may put it in hot water with the Jews too."

The Arrogance of Creationism (1)

I promised Tom here that I would make a response to a 15-minute video of his, but that video was so rife with misinformation and pseudoscience that the end result would have been a two-hour-long video debunking nearly every single statement that he made. This 8-minute video response (his clips not included) is a rebuttal of merely one minute of that video.

Anyway, this turned into a video series where I examine the core mentality of creationism while teaching physics. Fun right?

Matt Dillahunty - Greatest Rant Ever

"I don't want to live in a world where those with power impose their evil intent on the masses and not face any type of consequence. Without God people can easily escape human justice. I can't buy into that." - message from a woman to the Atheist Community of Austin, summarizing her reasons for being a Christian.

Penis, Meet Knife

There is no text to prepare us for this alarming turn of events.
The bible goes from verse 23, in which God plans to kill the first born of Egypt, to verse 24, in which God is about to kill Moses. He is saved when his wife circumcises his son and then assaults Moses with the bloody foreskin (Exodus 4:24-25)

This video is a short preview of my next cartoon, which is quite long and involved, so it's taking a lot of time and effort. It should be uploaded sometime mid-April.

The beginning of everything

Scientists from the Centre for Astrophysics have found evidence of gravitational waves created mere moments after the dawn of the Universe. These waves were created in a period of rapid expansion called cosmic inflation. This new evidence could prove the definitive confirmation of the inflation theory. It seems that finally, scientists can claim to understand the goings on at the beginning of everything.

The Sad, Funny Irony of Mark Levin Freaking at an Atheist

"Conservative radio host Mark Levin became enraged on Monday and hung up on an atheist caller who had suggested that presidential candidates should not have to believe in God.

During a radio segment flagged by The Right Scoop, a caller said that he was disappointed that Levin continued to "perpetuate the myth" that religious faith was a prerequisite for being a good leader.

"Oh, I forgot, I'm not supposed to mention faith or God," Levin interrupted sarcastically. "I've decided to bring it up because I'm sick and tired of us being told, 'Just tax cuts, don't bring up that other stuff. Oh, my God! Don't bring up God! For God sakes!' Right? You got it?""*

Beautiful Response to an Ugly Offer from a Known Bigot

"The Catholic League's Bill Donohue, pit bull of the Catholic Church in America and a man who now seems completely out of touch with his own pope, is furious that Guinness beer opted for diversity rather than bigotry when the company decided to pull out as a sponsor of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City this year. Donohue has now called for a Catholic boycott of Guinness beer (we'll get to that in a minute), and yesterday he also applied to the NYC Pride march committee to march this June in the parade under a banner that reads, "Straight Is Great," and the committee has agreed to let him march.

I say: Bring it on! Let's let Bill Donohue march in the parade and show that we are better than those troglodytes who run the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York, increasingly out of touch with the world. Of course, the Pride parade is about LGBT pride, so perhaps Donohue has to tweak that banner a bit to say, "Straights Who Support Gays Are Great," or "Catholics Who Support Gays Are Great." After all, the LGBT people who want to march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade don't want to march under a banner that says, "Gay Is Great." They want to celebrate Irish pride and being gay and would more likely have a banner that says, "Irish, Gay and Proud.""* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

The Rise of Black Secularism

In his presentation "Breaking the Taboo of Atheism in Black Communities," Leo Igwe said that "If there are people who should be religious and theistic today, it is not black people."

Yet black people are reputed to be the most religious people on earth, and the social stigma for the black atheist can be significant and often severe.

As skeptics, how do we approach the issue of color in relation to non-belief? Should we strive to be "colorblind," ignoring labels like black, white, etc? Or should color be acknowledged, embraced and even celebrated by those who accept the evolutionary explanation of our origins (aka: we are all Africans)?

Tonight features a panel of very special guests: Jamila Bey: Director of Commnications for the Secular Student Alliance, Alix Jules, President of Black Nonbelievers of Dallas, and Bridgette Gaudette, Executive Director of the Florida Humanist Association. The show will respectfully approach a subject that is controversial, even considered taboo, and will hopefully provide education and resources for atheists of all colors and cultures.

I can be an engine
Buzzing like a bee, I'm a real independent
Doing the laundry and planning for the future
It's the nature of a renaissance girl

I can be your darling
Cooking you dinner and soothing your heart aches
Having three kids and still remain a virgin
It's my version of a renaissance girl

Lift me, lift me up
Where the air is thin and my mind will take off
Pull me, pull me down
Where my love is pure and my feet are on ground

Come along, come come along
We can be your renaissance girls
Come along, come come along
Move forward, move forward
Come along, come come along
Tough like rocks and sweet like pearls
Come along, come come along
We can be your renaissance

I can be an artist
Sculpting your face like you always wanted
Making you believe it's just how I saw it
It's logic for a renaissance girl
I can be impressed by all the things you know
I'm a fan, I'm obsessed now
Knitting you a sweater while I drive in your fast car
It's mastered by a renaissance girl

I'll invest my money, you can be my backbone
I'll call you honey, you can cry on my shoulder
Let it all breathe

Satan's Sunday School Song lyrics:
The Lord told Noah
I'm gonna send a floody floody
The Lord said to Noah
You better build an arkie arkie
Build it out of gofer wood barky barky
Minions of the Lord

The people and animals
God was just going to drowny drowny
But some of the animals
Came to the ark in their twosies and sevensies
Elephants and... somehow kangaroosies???
Minions of the Lord

It rained and it poured
For forty nights and daysies daysies
It rained and it poured
For upteen bajillion daysies daysies
Try not to think about it
It will drive you crazy crazy
Minions of the Lord

Then Noah he sent out
He sent out a dovie dovie
It brought back an olive branch
To show there was dry landie landie
Noah sacrificed an animal
Just for the lordie lordie
Because he had some to spare

Then Noah
Grew a vineyard
Sat naked in a tent as a drunkie drunkie
His son Ham he saw him
Told his bros that dad was funky funky
Shem and Japheth
Covered dad with a blanky blanky
Then Noah cursed Ham's son Caanon

Anti-Gay Plan Backfires On Catholic League President

*Catholic League President Bill Donohue claimed he was forced to back out of his plan to participate in the New York City LGBT Pride parade because the event's organizers wanted to force him into "gay training." "Today, I informed Heritage of Pride officials that I objected to their rule requiring me to attend gay training sessions, or what they call 'information' sessions," Donohue was quoted as saying on Friday. "'I don't agree with your rule,' I said. They responded by saying that attendance was 'mandatory.'" As The New Civil Rights Movement reported, what Donohue is actually complaining about is a safety orientation meeting that is required for the heads of every organization taking part in the June 2 event...*

Noah's Flood: God's Perfect Injustice

With the movie "Noah" hitting the theaters this weekend I decided to talk about the sick and twisted story of Noah's ark and the supposed great flood of Genesis. Also, I introduce "Dawkins" the dog, the newest member to our family.

The Genesis account of Noah's ark and the great flood has to be the most horrendous account of stark wholesale slaughter of countless unborn babies, infants, toddlers, children, women, men and the elderly, ever told. And yet, millions will flock to the movie as a herd of psychopathic Jason bates lauding the murder of mankind. Is there anything more twisted and sick than this? I think not.
