Hunting Extraterrestrials: Interview with SETI Icon Jill Tarter

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. No other space-related program so effectively stirs our emotions, symbolizes our sense of hope and optimism for the future, or provokes philosophical debates about the meaning of our life and our place in the universe. Dr. Jill Tarter, a key player and icon of SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, joins Justin Trottier for a special live interview of The Star Spot, an astronomy and space themed podcast, filmed as part of the Centre for Inquiry's Fall Equinox events.

Astronomer Jill Tarter is the holder of the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI. She is one of the few researchers to have devoted her career to hunting for signs of sentient beings, and there are few aspects of this field that have not been affected by her work.
Jill was the lead for Project Phoenix, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems, using telescopes in Australia, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. While no clearly extraterrestrial signal was found, this was the most comprehensive targeted search for artificially generated cosmic signals ever undertaken. Now Jill heads up the Institute's efforts to build and operate the Allen Telescope Array, a massive new instrument that will eventually comprise 350 antennas, each 6 meters in diameter. This telescope will be able to enormously increase the speed, and the spectral search range, of the Institute's hunt for signals. A subset of the full array will begin operations in the Fall of 2007.

Indeed, being as much of an icon of SETI as Jill is, perhaps it is not surprising that the Jodie Foster character in the movie "Contact" is largely based on this real-life researcher.

Richard Dawkins, "The Making of a Scientist" | Talks at Google

Ray Kurzweil welcomes Richard Dawkins to the Talks at Google program.

With the 2006 publication of The God Delusion, the name Richard Dawkins became a byword for ruthless skepticism and "brilliant, impassioned, articulate, impolite" debate (San Francisco Chronicle). His first memoir offers a more personal view. His first book, The Selfish Gene, caused a seismic shift in the study of biology by proffering the gene-centered view of evolution. It was also in this book that Dawkins coined the term meme, a unit of cultural evolution, which has itself become a mainstay in contemporary culture.

In An Appetite for Wonder, Richard Dawkins shares a rare view into his early life, his intellectual awakening at Oxford, and his path to writing The Selfish Gene. He paints a vivid picture of his idyllic childhood in colonial Africa, peppered with sketches of his colorful ancestors, charming parents, and the peculiarities of colonial life right after World War II. At boarding school, despite a near-religious encounter with an Elvis record, he began his career as a skeptic by refusing to kneel for prayer in chapel. Despite some inspired teaching throughout primary and secondary school, it was only when he got to Oxford that his intellectual curiosity took full flight.

Sanal Edamaruku - Indian Gurus: From Flying Fakirs and Starving Saints

Sanal Edamaruku is an Indian skeptic and founder of Rationalist International. He is the acting president of both Rationalist International and the Indian Rationalist Association, as well as editor of the internet publication Rationalist International. He has exposed numerous frauds, mystics and superstitions in India. In 2012, the Catholic Church filed a complaint against Edamaruku and he was criminally charged with hurting religious sentiments after he debunked a weeping Jesus statue in Mumbai. He has been forced into exile until the charges are dropped.

I Believe In The Devil - Supreme Court Justice Scalia

"Justice Antonin Scalia is burning up the social media world today with a big, free-range interview he gave Jennifer Senior at New York magazine. In it, Scalia pretty much out-Scalias himself yet again. Highlights include his objections to the coarsening of modern discourse, his fondness for Seinfeld, the rationale behind his fiery dissents, and a rather remarkable discursion about the devil. But beyond the wacky stuff and the bombastic stuff and the typically unrepentant poke-in-the-eye stuff (including his insistence that he doesn't hate homosexuals) and the Freudian slip about the "Nazi soup kitchen," what's glaringly in evidence throughout the piece is the way he has managed to shutter himself off from the world of his critics and intellectual opponents. Justice Antonin Scalia seems a bit like a man living on a tiny remote island of the Supreme Court, and even on that tiny island, he's forever more alone...".

Pastor Went to Funeral of Victims He Killed

Pastor Kenneth Keith of Main Street Baptist Church in Burnside, Kentucky

Ballad of the Non-Believer

Lyrics: Ballad of the Non-Believer

1st verse
like most of you I was indoctrinated with religion
at a time when I was much too young to make decisions

dragged by the hand without permission
lacked the cognitive ability to see the contradictions and the superstitions

I know my mother really thought that she was doing right
cause after all this wasn't a war that she was taught to fight

buried under layers of prayers emotional attachments
and every other programming attached with

a sense of common unity involvement
no actual incentive to questions all of the sermons from the pulpit

this is how they introduce the idea, firmly rooted in the feat
don't question validity just adhere

it's not innocent is sets a bad precedent
internalized credulity for things that lack evidence

some people keep this way of thinking for their whole lives
the need for critical thinking is never realized

chorus
I don't want to hear about the books that you have read
explain to me the way you see the thoughts inside your head

not filtered with the garbage you regurgitate instead
your thoughts are just a program with which you are embed

all I really want to do is show you there is freedom
eliminate those primitive myths you don't need them

the clergy's only trolling for power so don't feed them
and since they can't prove it remove it and don't believe them

2nd verse
ponder the logic of learning science from shamans
excuse the laughter if you please I'm trying to keep it all in

but this is how you look when you go and consult your preachers
to gain an understanding of evolutionary features

in fact I finding it despicable how you characterize scientific principles
dismiss the indispensable

so don't believe these guys that say it's science they despise
when they standing in the line for the iphone 5

you're benefiting from the method then you go and step on it
defaming the very thing that your life has been effected with

our lifespan enhancement comes directly from advancements
by people in lab coats not biblical enchantments

take a look at these comedians cause something smells funky
"if we came from monkeys than why there're still monkeys"

see that's the type of dumb shit that needs to be responded to
your obvious accomplishment was dropping out of high school

3rd verse
you're not mentally fit to be talking shit to me
when you believe those primitive books are reflecting history

in it's purest form like it really has no discrepancy
you want to go to war and you're choosing this as your weaponry

now how's that even sound at all and is this even logic when
you're claiming that a book of faith can prove your stupid argument

way to much to bargain with not much fact to stake it on
it's just like thinking if you dance you can really make it storm

oh yeah but I forgot your book is the truthful one
and all those other ancient myths are something that is really dumb

it couldn't possibly be that you all have been deceived
it couldn't possibly be that you got a false belief

that's why I question your sermon should be sequestered
now leave from off my porch you're starting to really pester

you're one of many thousands that's claiming a revelation
too wrapped up in all of your ego to see your indoctrination

Break the Science Barrier w/ Richard Dawkins

Break the Science Barrier follows the Oxford Biologist Richard Dawkins as he meets with people who have experienced the wonders of science first-hand.

We meet the astronomer who first discovered pulsars, the geneticist who invented DNA fingerprinting, a scientist who discovered a protein that causes cancer, and others.

Richard Dawkins interviews famous admirers of science such as Douglas Adams and David Attenborough, and asks them why science means so much to them. We also see how dangerous ignorance of science can be in classrooms, courts, and beyond.

With so many expressing paranormal beliefs and ignorance of science, Richard Dawkins encourages viewers to contrast these ancient superstitions with the power and beauty of our scientific achievements and understanding. For more information see: http://richarddawkins.net/

An Appetite for Wonder: Richard Dawkins in Conversation with Adam Rutherford

Professor Richard Dawkins discusses the influences and inspirations that have shaped his life and thinking.

Chatting to science broadcaster Adam Rutherford in the world-famous Ri Lecture Theatre, the pioneering scientist and public thinker reveals how he developed an "appetite for wonder" for the biological sciences.

An Appetite for Wonder: The Making of a Scientist

From his upbringing in Nairobi and Nyasaland (now Malawi) to his early experiences with religion, Richard Dawkins talks about his motivations for becoming a scientist and his experiences at Oxford University and Berkeley, California during a period of social and political unrest.

Find out how he arrived at the idea of the "selfish gene" -- the basis of his seminal 1976 publication, one of the best-selling popular science books ever written -- and discover more about his research and writing process.

Plus, the Ri audience ask a range of revealing questions -- from how he overcome his natural shyness and stutter at school to what his advice would be to an 18 year old who wants to get into popular science.

Millions are Living Happily Without Religion

Millions of Americans are living happily without religion.

It's really quite simple.

We are the products of the billions of years that came before us, alive and awake for this brief period of time, savoring every moment, and committed to making the world a better place.

We are the human family -- connected. We experience together the human condition, in all of its triumphs and through all of its challenges.

We accept that our lives will end, but we take great joy in knowing that life keeps going.

We celebrate the advances and discoveries that, each day, improve lives, stir our imagination, and stretch the boundaries of the possible.

Ultimately, we know we are a tiny but unique part of the ever-evolving story of life in the cosmos, responsible for living our lives with honesty, dignity, compassion, and truth.

We also know it is a magnificent story, and we are thrilled to be here.

We are secular humanists, and we are living happily without religion.
