Sukkot as a Festival of Peace and Security

Yom Kippur is now behind us and the next holiday is just around the corner, the festival of Sukkot. Sukkot is known as "Z'man Sim'chah'tay'nu," the time of our rejoicing. In ancient times when there was a sacificial rite in the Temple they brought 70 booths or 7 days. Why 70? According to Biblical calculations, there were 70 nations. What is interesting is that it is not until the 8th day, when we observe the holiday of Shemini Atzeret, was a sacrifice really brought for the Jews themselves. For the first 7 days, the Sukkot holiday is dedicated to the benefit of the nations of the world. God should shower them with blessing. God should give them water for their crops and bless them.

That same theme is also seen in the structure of the sukkah itself. Its generally built with four walls, like a house. It can have as few as 2 1/2 walls, but they must be able to withstand the elements like winds. The roof is made out of schach, piece of wood, tree limbs, etc. The sun can still come in while shade is still somewhat provided. While the walls protect us, the roof is open. So even as we take care of ourselves we are still looking up at the sun, stars, light and nations of the world. Even when you take the four species, the lulov and etrog, when we shake them we shake them all around us. Again, toward all the nations of the world. What we want to bring to the nations of the world is a message of peace and security. The message of Sukkot. This is very true today as we see what is happening at the UN and in Iran. We need to pray for the benefit of the nations of the world, that we can all live in peace and security. May this festival of joy be a festival for all the nations of the world and may we soon see peace prevail throughout the world.

How To Grow A Planet

How To Grow A Planet: We might think humans are the most powerful living thing on Earth, but it's plants that time and again have set the agenda for life. All animals rely on plants for their survival. This is not an accident - they are the most powerful evolutionary force on Earth. Plants enabled amphibians to leave the water, they had a hand in the rise and fall of the dinosaurs, and they ensured the ultimate triumph of insects, mammals, birds and even us - all for their own benefit. Because plants have only ever had one goal - the total domination of the planet. It is a story of ruthless ingenuity, seduction and deception; of unimaginable power and ambition. An epic tale, How to Grow a Planet offers a stunning new perspective on Earth history.

Life from Light: In this first episode Iain journeys from the spectacular caves of Vietnam to the remote deserts of Africa. He sees how plants first harnessed light from the sun and created our life-giving atmosphere. He uncovers the epic battle between the dinosaurs and the tallest trees on the planet. And, using remarkable imagery, he shows plants breathing - and for the first time talking to each other.

The Power of Flowers: In the second episode, Iain discovers how flowers have transformed our planet. He journeys to the remote islands of the South Pacific to track down the earliest flowers. In the deserts of Africa and rainforests of Vietnam, he sees how they brought brilliant colour to the most barren landscapes and sculpted the earth itself. And he learns how they drove the evolution of all animals - kick-starting our human story.

The Challenger: In the third episode, Iain discovers the remarkable impact of just one plant: grass. On the savannah of South Africa he sees how grass unleashed a firestorm to fight its greatest enemy, the forests. He shows how cutting your finger on a blade of grass shows us how it transformed life in the oceans. In Senegal, he meets the cleverest chimps in the world. And, in the ruins of the oldest temple on Earth, he tells the extraordinary story of how grass triggered human civilisation.

Molina believes we can solve the looming crisis through international collaboration -- as happened after he showed that CFCs were damaging the ozone layer. Laughlin disagrees. Some AMAZING facts about life!

Life can be pretty amazing, but what exactly is it at its core?
Life at its simplest is basically a series of chemical reactions that can replicate themselves.

Now all life we have yet come across is tied up with water. Waters a really common, and really polar molecule: theres nothing else really like it. Its strong polar interactions make it an excellent solvent for pretty much anything polar, and also a terrible solvent for non-polar molecules like oil. Life is interesting in that its a subtle interplay of things that are soluble, and not soluble in water. This leads to the changes in the structures of biomolecules that in the end play a key role in life.

In future videos, we will talk about the difference between cladogenesis (new species splitting off an existing one) and anagenesis (the formation of a new species by the transformation of an existing one). Most creationists assume evolution proceeds entirely by anagenesis, when it is almost entirely by cladogenesis.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:
I'm is often forced to use terms that are imprecise in order to convey scientific ideas. The idea of the ancestral lineage of animals becoming more "specialized" is in the sense of "more like their own species". This means that a "generalized" bird is one that represents the common ancestor of the "genus". Each new adaptation that is acquired along an ancestral line goes into the evolutionary history of that species, but this acquisition is one-sided, not an equilibrium of change.

If it helps, think of Dollo's law as the "arrow of time" for evolutionary change.

Buddhism is just as crazy as other religion.

Rebirth upon rebirth for millions and millions of years. Sure!

Any murder will suffer in their next life (karma/samsara). Of cource, how did it not see that coming.

Buddhism is not science!

Transcript

The whole sort of atheist critique of religion doesn't really address Buddhism insofar as Buddhism is established really as a science of the mind. It's based on observation of the mind. And everything that Buddha taught can be empirically verified through your own experience. In other words, you can test it. Actually, I think it's a very interesting science because you're the scientist. You're not just reading about what other scientists have done and, you know, confirmed and so forth like that, but you, yourself, are the experimenter. You experiment with your own mind.

What Buddha basically said is that we can understand through our own experience that happiness comes from inner peace. And we can explore that in our own experiences and see, well, that's true, happiness does come from inner peace. And maybe even more importantly, we can also then establish, I have the capacity for inner peace in my own mind. In fact, we might even say that through training of the mind, through practicing meditation, you can see that it's actually not difficult. All we need to do is learn to let go of our unhappy thoughts, and our mind automatically becomes peaceful.

So in other words, you don't have to, like, make your mind peaceful, you just have to let go of your unhappy thoughts, your angry thoughts or your anxious thoughts.
And what happens through that is that you then begin to experience a sense of peace, a deep inner peace. And you can verify that through your own experience. And through that, you get in touch then with your own potential for peace or other virtuous minds, like love or compassion or joy or kindness, generosity. In other words, you can verify it through your own experimentation that that is the case.

What we then discover is that the mind has this incredible capacity for profound peace or, we might say, for limitless love, for limitless kindness. That's where I find some fault with the -- you know, as you're calling it, the "new atheism." Simply because I don't think they are paying enough attention to the science of the mind through which we can establish, so to speak, an alternative science, but it's equally, empirically verifiable that there is a spiritual dimension to our being that you can discover through your own practice, in fact, that there is this, yeah, you might say a divine element to our nature because we discover that the mind has this capacity for limitless love, limitless compassion, limitless joy.

Abiogenesis - who did life start

The Theory of Evolution provides a rich explanation for why we see the diversity of life here on Earth. There are so many lines of evidence, from genetic drift to the fossil record. But how did life start?

How did things go from a collection of raw materials to the building blocks of life, giving evolution and natural selection a way to take over? That first step, from non-life to life is called "abiogenesis", and it's one of the most important questions science can answer.

Astronomy Cast Episode 272 Abiogenesis

A golden age? with Brian Schmidt and John Mather

The Hubble Space Telescope has shown us distant galaxies and planets orbiting other stars, deepening our knowledge of the Universe. Nobel prizewinner John Mather works on Hubble's replacement, the James Webb Space Telescope. He believes we are in a golden age of astronomy. But the young researchers he meets are not convinced. There are too many unanswered questions, they say. For example: what's causing the accelerated expansion of the Universe? Hear how Mather and fellow laureate Brian Schmidt, who first observed this expansion, handle their queries.

Mitt's Magical Mormon Undies: Penn Jillette's Rant Redux

Transcript --
Mitt Romney is wearing crazy underwear. He's wearing magic underwear. He is. I mean, under his pants, he is wearing magic underwear. Magic underwear. And he believes that a convicted con man got golden tablets that no one else could see, and sat with an angel to find out that the original Jews of the Bible were living in North America. Crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy. But... just more modern, not more crazy, than other religions. Not more crazy than Islam, you know, with your... not more crazy than virgin births and resurrections. Not more crazy than any of that stuff.

So when someone says, they believe in the word of God literally, I go back and think about Genesis, where people were living to be 900 years old. And I say bullshit! And then I think about Noah and the flood, killing everybody? God that loves us kills everybody? And he wants to get two of every species and seven of the ones that are clean onto a boat that floats for that amount of time? And I just go, really? Because you don't act that way. You're able to go to Home Depot, you're able to pay with a credit card, you're able to go to Starbucks, you know how to use a computer. Really? Do you really mean that? What do you mean literally? Do you really mean that you're going to stone someone to death who because they work on the Sabbath, are you really gonna do that? Really, honestly? You're gonna take a rock in your hand and throw at the mother-fucker's head because he worked on a Sunday to support his family? Are you really gonna do that? If you mix cotton and linen in your clothing are you really going to go to hell? What do you mean when you say that?

And no one's ever answered me. There's a code going on that I need the Rosetta Stone. I need someone to sit me down and go, Penn, when Obama says he went to that church and they talked about all this stuff being literal, what he really meant was... fill in the blank! Tell me! What does he really mean? These people are good, honest, smart, not bat shit crazy people, so why the fuck are they saying bat shit crazy stuff to me?

Penn Jillette: An Atheist's Guide to the 2012 Election

In this (profane) installment of Penn Jillette's Atheist's Guide to the 2012 Election, the Penn and Teller illusionist (and outspoken atheist) sizes up Mitt Romney's religion.

If God Weren't Invisible

A great point made in a conversation I had with LiveLife8072 and NegationofP is that believers don't act like God is there, watching them. They act appropriately when someone real walks in and catches them in an uncompromising situation, like masturbating or something, but God was already supposed to be there. Perhaps this is a sign that, deep down, they don't truly believe.

This is the second in C0nc0rdance's series on Dr. Brad Harrub's "Origins" talk in College Station, TX around August 9th, 2012.

In the section, C0nc0rdance address his argument from historical scientists. The key point: Many scientists throughout history have been religious, but it was not their religious beliefs that informed their science. The fact that Brad Harrub focuses on scientists who lived prior to Charles Darwin says a lot.

C0nc0rdance thought it might be interesting to explore the actual religious beliefs of the people being summoned to testify on Brad Harrub's behalf. Most of them were unorthodox by today's standards, and some of them can better testify to the negative; that religious or superstitious belief has hindered science and the progress of knowledge.

The context of the clip from Brad Harrub's talk is that he was addressing Bill Nye's comments that creationism can hold students back from understanding the actual science. This is true. When a person has a commitment to dogmatic doctrine that conflicts with truth or evidence, they face a difficult choice: either reject the truth, or reject the doctrine.

c0nc0rdance's wager:
Whenever a supernatural explanation competes with a natural explanation, so far in the history of science, the natural has always held up to more scrutiny.

Richard Dawkins BHA Award Acceptance Speech 2012

Richard Dawkins quotes a passages from Bertrand Russell and Julian Huxley, along with creating his own rhyme about Andrew Copson during his acceptance speech for the BHA award of Services to Humanism.

Richard speaks of his idea for a new degree course with evolution at the centre, branching out into philosophy, economics, engineering, medicine, agriculture, social science, linguistics, physics, cosmology, computer science, and more...

Charles Darwin is discussed with references to how all Doctors should be Darwinian's and how past mistakes could have been avoided if that were so.

Professor Dawkins also discusses Balliol College and talks of how classics and scientific disciplines can be tied in together, emphasising the importance of the study of classics in terms of evolution.

The Human Spark: So Human So Chimp

We are separated from our nearest relatives, the chimpanzees, by only one or two percent of our genes -- but also by some 6 million years of going our different evolutionary ways. So when we meet the eyes of a chimp we are reminded uncannily -- and perhaps a little uneasily -- of ourselves.

Part 1/4

But we are also aware that behind those eyes is a mind very different from our own. Alan Alda sets out to explore that difference, and quickly finds that the scientists studying chimps and other non-human primates are themselves separated into opposing worldviews. One camp emphasizes the continuity between us -- seeing everything we believe to be uniquely human present in at least a rudimentary form in our ape and even monkey cousins. The other camp sees a sharp discontinuity in our abilities, admiring chimps for their superb adaptation to their (rapidly disappearing) forest environment, but also granting to human minds a special status that has enabled us to conquer the planet (and cause those forests to disappear).

Part 2/4

What is the nature of human uniqueness? Where did "The Human Spark" ignite, and when? And perhaps most tantalizingly, why? In this three-part series, Alan Alda takes these questions personally, visiting with dozens of scientists on three continents, and participating directly in many experiments -- including the detailed examination of his own brain. Bringing his trademark humor and curiosity to face-to-face conversations with leading researchers, he seeks "The Human Spark" -- from archaeologists finding clues in the fossilized bones and tools of our ancestors; to primatologists studying our nearest living relatives to explore what we have in common and what sets us apart; to neuroscientists peering into his mind with the latest brain scanning technologies.

Rosh Hashanah: Science vs Religion

Religion and science are frequently set up as polar opposites; incompatible ways of thinking. The Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks begs to differ. For him, science and religion can, and should, work together. To mark Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, he puts his position to the test.

Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks meets three non-believing scientists, each at the top of their field: neurologist Baroness Susan Greenfield, theoretical physicist Professor Jim Al-Khalili, and the person best known for leading the scientific attack on religion, Professor Richard Dawkins. Will the Chief Rabbi succeed in convincing the militant defender of atheism that science and religion need not be at war?

Thank Goodness

Acts of genuine good happen every moment of every day. Human beings can be capable of wonderful acts of generosity and goodwill, of love and sacrifice, of genuine goodness.

The Thinking Atheist Radio Podcast #71

So often these acts are cloaked in accolades, not for those involved, but for the invisible deities of archaic holy books. A physician treats a patient toward good health, and the family thanks God. A couple qualifies with the bank to purchase their first home, and they thank God. Someone wins $50 with a convenience store lottery ticket, and he thanks God.

This show deals with gratitude, where it is directed (and misdirected). It's a chance to put the spotlight on those who genuinely bring about the positive. It's a chance to Thank Goodness.

What Does Repentance Mean In Judaism?

During the High Holiday season we think about teshuva (repentance). Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of NJOP, explains that according to tradition, the King is out in the fields, he's left the palace in order to greet the people who have come to see him. That's what the 10 Days of Penitence are all about. God is out there with us waiting for us to come and express our regret.

What exactly is teshuva? The first step of repentance is to recognize that we've done something wrong. Today we explain away all of our wrong actions. We say big deal. Or, how can it be bad if it feels so good? There is an idea of healthy guilt in Judaism. Recognizing that we could be better. That is what the first step of teshuva is about. Recognizing when we have done something wrong, and changing ourselves.

The next step is to articulate what we have done wrong. To hear ourselves admitting it. Jews don't get to confess to a priest, or a rabbi. We need to confess to ourselves.

Finally, we must resolve not to do it again. If you are confronted with that same mistake you will act differently. If confronted with that same threat, instead of succumbing, we overcome it.

Rabbi Buchwald prays that God will accept all of our prayers, that we will all repent fully and we will be inscribed in for a year of health, happiness and peace. Shana Tova, Happy New Year!

Why pray in a synagogue on the High Holidays?

Many people ask themselves, why do we need Rosh Hashana? Why do we need to go to synagogue? Why the ritual? Doesn't God already know what's in my heart? Wouldn't it be simpler to stay home and talk to God? Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of NJOP, explains that what we want to accomplish on Rosh Hashana is the whole picture. While its true that we can pray at home, its more efficacious for us to pray at the synagogue. For example, if you're on a TV game show and they are focusing on you, if you make an error you may look foolish. But if you're in a group, there is a chance you can blend in. If you're confessing your sins with others they might not seem as bad, a little safer for us perhaps. That is one way to look at it. On the other hand, there is the issue of offering a more perfect prayer. You can only say the things that are in your heart. But if you come together with a group and everyone offers their own little piece of the prayer, it may not be perfect, but each has his own strength. Put all those pieces together and offer your prayers up to God. That is way we all pray together. If we know Hebrew we pray in Hebrew. Jews around the world all pray facing Jerusalem. So we are all offering prayers to God together, as one. How can God not accept the perfect prayers of Israel? It is important for us to come together on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Its true that God know what is in our hearts. But we have to articulate it. Prayer is vital.

Rabbi Buchwald prays that all of our prayers will be accepted for good for the year 5773. Shana Tova u'Metuka, wishing you all a Happy and Sweet New Year!

The Human Spark: Becoming Us

In the caves and rock shelters of the Dordogne region of France, Alan Alda witnesses the spectacular paintings and carvings that date back some 30,000 years, artwork that archeologists once thought to be the first record of people with minds like our own. When this art was created, Europe had already been peopled for hundreds of thousands of years -- and thousands of lifetimes -- by humans we call Neanderthals.

Part 1/4

Alan Alda discovers, from visits to sites where Neanderthals once lived, that Neanderthals were tenacious and resourceful. But they appear to have lived in and of the moment; certainly they produced no art, and employed a stone tool technology that changed little over millennia. The people who painted the caves, our ancestors, were strikingly different, possessed of what we are calling the Human Spark, capable not only of art but of innovative technology and symbolic communication. The questions Alan explores: Where and when did the Human Spark first ignite? In these caves, as archeologists have long believed? Or at a much earlier time -- and on another continent?

Evolution is just a Theory - Rebutting Harrub

Evolution is just a Theory.

This point has been made many times before, but it never seems to sink in with creationists. Evolution is "just a theory" in the same sense that gravity is "just a theory" or cells are "just a theory" or atoms are "just a theory".

This will be an ongoing series. I've managed to make six videos already, and I'm barely a quarter of the way through the video. I don't take much pleasure in debunking creationist arguments, but it's an opportunity to explore some key ideas in biology. I'm not worried about convincing evolution denialists that they are wrong. Their psychological mechanisms prevent that. As Hitchens famously said: "You cannot reason someone out of a position they did not arrive at by reason"

Why Does Rosh Hashana Matter?

With Rosh Hashana a little over a week away, we have to ask ourselves, why does Rosh Hashana matter? What makes it so important? Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of NJOP, discusses this important topic in this week's video

Its like in the story of Adam in the Garden of Eden. He's hiding from God after eating the forbidden fruit and God asks, where are you? Of course God knows where he is, what he's asking is, where is Adam existentially? Where are you spiritually? What have you done with your life? And where are you going? This is what God asks us each year on Rosh Hashana! We need to evaluate ourselves. We have a concept of Cheshbon Hanefesh, an accounting of our soul. We need to know we are going in the right direction, on the right path, doing the right thing, morally and ethically, in our behavior with ourselves and with other human beings. Rosh Hashana is the instrument that helps us face the world. When we make our own internal accounting of our deeds we know we're on the right track. That we will use every ounce of strength and moral conviction to do the right thing for ourselves and for human kind.

Rabbi Buchwald and the team at Jewish Treats wish you all a happy, sweet and healthy New Year. Shana Tova!

ENCODE: Encyclopedia Of DNA Elements

ENCODE, the Encyclopaedia of DNA Elements, is the most ambitious human genetics project to date. It takes the 3 billion letters described by the Human Genome Project in 2000, and tries to explain them. Remarkably, ENCODE scientists have managed to assign a biochemical function to 80% of the genome, including the genes and the parts of the genome that tell those genes what to do. This information is helping us understand how genomes are interpreted to make different types of cells and different people -- and crucially, how mistakes can lead to disease. In this video, ENCODE's lead coordinator, Ewan Birney, and Nature editor Magdalena Skipper talk about the challenges of managing this colossal project and what we've learnt about our genomes.

Waterworlds (documentary 2012)

Chris Packham travels across the world, from Iceland to Brazil, to Bangladesh and the Maldives. His aim: to reveal the secrets of our watery habitats, fresh and salty. The extra ingredients, carried in water and necessary for life, are oxygen and sediment. But it's how the animals manage these resources that determines whether a habitat can actually support much live.

In the Brazilian Pantanal, Chris witnesses a riot of life, in a land where everything seems to be a giant: the snakes, the big cats, the otters, the fish- even the lilies! The reason? Well, it comes down to a very unassuming mollusc, the apple snail. In the Sunderbans swamp of Bangladesh, Chris Packham shows us how crabs create an environment fit for mangroves, deer and tigers. In the Maldives, he meets the hero of the coral reef - the sponge. And in the deep ocean, Chris Packham meets the biggest (or smallest) hero of them all. Plankton not only feed our ocean giants, they even influence our atmosphere and climate.

Secrets of Our Living Planet showcases the incredible ecosystems that make life on Earth possible. Using beautifully shot scenes from all over the world, naturalist Chris Packham reveals the hidden wonder of the creatures that we share the planet with, and the intricate, clever and bizarre connections between the species, without which life just could not survive.

For Chris Packham, what is really beautiful about nature is not the amazing animals and plants that we share the planet with but the hidden relationships between them. Discover why a tiger needs a crab; or why a gecko needs a giraffe. Each week Chris Packham visits one of our planet's most vital and spectacular habitats and dissects it, to reveal the secrets of how our living planet works.
