Tolerance of Dogma

This week, Becky, Keight (BionicDance on YouTube) and Mike discuss the often misunderstood phrase "tolerance."

He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD.
Bible. King James Version. Deuteronomy 23:1

This is Ask An Atheist Season 5, Episode 8

Objective Morality vs Christianity

I don't think that arguing against objective morality, or arguing FOR it but towards a naturalistic source, are the only options. Take a look at what happens when we (even hypothetically) concede that it has a theistic basis! It certainly doesn't do Christianity any favors.

Why couldn't an objective morality simply make sense? Why does looking at morality through the lens of Christianity make such LITTLE sense? Well, it's obvious why - Christianity and its god is nonsense. There could be no clearer sign that Christianity is a man-made bunch of bollocks, than to look at its claims on objective morality. All these special pleadings about context and new vs old covenants are the dying gasps of a belief system that before long won't have anyone even TRYING to make it make sense. You'd be better off trying to argue that Joseph Fritzl is the greatest father that the world has ever known (within a certain context).

Look elsewhere for an objective moral law giver, other than Christianity, for the god that you are convinced must exist. It can't hurt - and the bible has caused enough problems on this planet, with its contradictory and wicked claims and commands. Don't support, or give cover, to those who want us to base our modern societies around that absurd mess of a book. Be honest with yourself, and reject it, as people do who take a real, open, honest look at what it says. It isn't divine, it is appallingly man-made. Man-made as in MALE-made, too, quite obviously.

Robertson: "What In Heaven's Name Is a Dominionist?"

Pat Robertson says he has no idea what "dominionism" is and whatever it is, he is not a dominionist.

Dominionism describes, in several distinct ways, a tendency among some conservative politically-active Christians, especially in the United States of America, to seek influence or control over secular civil government through political action — aiming either at a nation governed by Christians, or a nation governed by a conservative Christian understanding of biblical law.

The origin can be traced back to a specific passage in the King James Version of the Bible:

And God blessed [Adam and Eve] and God said unto them, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."
- Genesis, Chapter 1. King James Bible

Why go to Church?

The observation that virtually all religions are power based male hierarchies is very telling and suggestive.

The most obvious suggestion for the origin of such hierarchies is that they are the best way to combat the nastiest enemy such a species can face, and that's a power based hierarchy of the same species.

If you then make the simple assumption that these are the cause and effect, religion then becomes a surrogate spinoff of this biological attribute. Not dissimilar to the reason we have pornography. The porn may not actually hit the actual target the metabolism was tuned for, but it does deliver the satisfaction that the biological mechanism was tuned for.

This is the only critical review of large population prospective studies comparing vegetarians to non-vegetarians. As such, it remains the best arbiter of what the actual benefits are of these diets.

Vegetarians in these studies had a lower risk of heart disease. Other than that, it wasn't possible to demonstrate any other effects using this study.

The major criticism of this type of systematic review is the mixing of different (heterogenous) data sets. It's hard to compare vegans in 1970's Germany to 1990's Seventh Day Adventists and not get some confounders.

The Importance of Mourning on Tisha B'Av

Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of Jewish Treats' parent organization, the National Jewish Outreach Program, speaks about the Fast Day of Tisha B'Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. By relating a story about the great French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, Rabbi Buchwald shares why he believes that mourning on this day is of the utmost importance.

Napoleon was marching through Europe when he came across a Jewish town and stopped in front of a synagogue. He heard the people inside crying. Napoleon entered the synagogue and saw the people sitting on the floor with candles weeping. He asked one of the congregants "Why do you cry?" He was told that the Temple had been destroyed. Assuming that this had recently happened, Napoleon asked "When was it destroyed?" The Jewish man answered, "We're talking about the great Temples in Jerusalem that were destroyed first by the Babylonians and then by the Romans 2000 years ago." Napoleon was taken aback. He said "Anyone who can mourn the destruction of a Temple for 2000 years will surely see that Temple rebuilt." Tonight we begin the Fast of Tisha B'Av, which is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, marking the destruction of First Temple by the Babylonians and the Second Temple by the Romans. Its amazing that Jews still mourn over the Temple. Rabbi Buchwald believes that this is an authentic and genuine Jewish mourning. In fact, he believes so strongly in the mourning of Tisha B'Av that he believes that it is only those people who mourn on Tisha B'Av will ever remember that there was a Holocaust. As recognized as the Holocaust is today, and with all the institutions and memorials that have been established, he still believes that it will only be those who mourn on Tisha B'Av that will truly remember the Holocaust, because this national day of mourning represents all the mourning for all the tragedies that occurred to the Jewish people.

May you have a meaningful fast and may the words of Napoleon come true in our day and age!

Learn more about the Fast Day of Tisha B'Av with this post from the Jewish Treats archives (http://www.jewishtreats.org)

Tisha B'Av
Tonight, at sunset, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar begins. Known as the Fast of the 9th of Av (Tisha B'Av), the observances of the day are very similar to Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. In addition to fasting (no food or drink) for a 25 hour period from sundown Monday to nightfall on Tuesday, additional restrictions include refraining from washing, using lotions, wearing leather shoes and marital relations.

Aside from the synagogue service, there are two major distinctions between the two days: 1. Work (creative labor) is permitted on Tisha B'Av, and 2. Tisha B'Av's customs are mourning oriented, while Yom Kippur's observances have a more joyous tone as we celebrate our anticipated absolution from sin via the suppression of our physical needs. After all, we are compared on Yom Kippur to angels (which is also why we wear white).

Like the 17th of Tammuz, there are five events commemorated on Tisha B'Av (Mishnah Ta'anit 4:6).

1. God's decree that the Israelites would wander in the wilderness for 40 years.

2. The destruction of the First Temple.

3. The destruction of the Second Temple.

4. The end of the Bar Kochba revolt, when the Romans destroyed the city of Betar.

5. The city of Jerusalem was plowed over by Turnus Rufus, a Roman general.

The evidence indicates that the personal god is a manifestation of the ego, which explains a plethora of theistic tendencies, including their typical dislike of atheists, who theists subconsciously perceive to be rejecting a part of themselves. Beating Astronomical Odds

Unbelievable. Or not.

Everything, everywhere, is currently defying astronomical odds. Nobody cares, though, unless you can somehow correctly assert the outcome ahead of time. Nobody was there to do that at the big bang. Nobody was there to say that all this is happening because over 13 billion years from now, there will be humans, and it's all for them. Normally, I wouldn't believe that anyone could have such hubris. Then, I met some theists. They say that indeed everything was specially fashioned for we humans. And who told them that? Why...other humans, of course! Inevitably, though, the universe will reclaim them.

Why Kalam Fails

William Lane Craig has made this argument quite famous, but I see the whole thing as sophistry. TheoreticalBullshit, a very intelligent young man I was pleased to meet in person, has managed to get William Lane Craig to respond to this argument (though Craig uses a strawman...big surprise). Craig's response was arrogant and disingenuous.

Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners, or as they are usually referred to in the literature "non-caloric" sweeteners or "high-intensity" sweeteners, address the problem of sugar calorie excess in our diet. They've been demonstrated to support weight loss or maintenance, reduce cavities and can be part of a healthy lifestyle.

iRenew Scam Explained

A short explanation of how the iRenew Bracelets work. They do not actually effect or help improve strength/balance/or flexibility. Supposedly we are exposed to "Positive Ions" from radio waves.

iRenew/Energy Factor bands, expose you to "Negative Ions" which help balance everything out. It seems strange that one could receive such medical benefits in a few seconds of wearing the band, while one has been exposed to radio waves for decades. It's not possible.
